Since we do not eat animal products, where do we get sufficient Vitamin B-12?

well, i already addressed this question.. over at the other part of the forum..a long time ago.. and was assailed by many responses..mostly that we do not need supplements.

well, i guess people do not think we need them.

i have an online diet guide and i post what i eat mostly every day to see if i am getting adequate amounts of all my vitamins and minerals, and protein and fiber.. I just like doing that until i get totally familiar.

no matter what i have put into the counter,,(and it has vitamin and mineral and protein and misc counts for every fruit and veggie imaginable and sea vegetable,
no b 12 ever shows up.. ever.. and i have done this daily for about five months.

if you want to find a program similar to the one i use, you can go here:
http://www.fitday.com

so i found a raw vegan spray called "pure vegan B 12".

you may do a google of it if you feel so inclined.

that is all i am going to say.. because most people around here get positively ...um contentious, when you mention supplements.

i have no problem with using them at all.

That sounds like a good idea. Can you share where we could access such a diet guide.

Our General Practitioner recommended some time ago a prescription B12 for my husband as well as me. Wayne also has to get B12 shots on a regular basis in addition to the prescription. So apparently for the two of us a B12 deficiency was noted already or he would not have given us a prescription nor the shots for Wayne. So if I know where the best B12 is in foods, I will certainly want to emphasize those foods. The guide you mentioned would probably help me a lot if you can share it.

I am certainly not against supplements, but am particular about what type, brand, etc. Because of my involvement with the HFS industry 20 years ago I just know I need to be cautious as to what I use. We are particularly interested in sufficient calcium and the right kind as well as B12. As we age further there will no doubt be other concerns for us. Wayne is 84 and is doing well.

Alice, I am not sure the majority of people here are against supplements. There are a few that have been outspoken against, but they do not speak for the majority of us I am sure. But it seems we (the majority) are interested in information in general.

As always, Alice, thank you so much for your informative posts.

I believe that it is wise to supplement - our food supply is just not what it should be, and even when living naturally, we are exposed everyday to harmful chemicals that our body has to deal with.

Even if not vegan, B12 is beneficial for most people - especially a food source supplement (hard to find - this is the one I take http://www.qnlabs.com/qnpdfs/QN%20Max%20Stress%20B.pdf ) or a sublingual B12, B6, folic acid. From what I understand, the sublingual is as good as the shot - it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Hallelujah Acres has a sublingual. Also, their research - http://www.hacres.com/diet/research/b12_summary.pdf

Alice, thanks so much for the fitday link! I went there and created an account, and posted today's foods. Now I know why I am losing weight! I especially like the nutritional goals aspect, as I want to be vigilant about my iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D especially. I have a STRONG familial risk for osteoporosis (mom, dad, older sis, three aunts [that I know of...] all have osteoporosis and my little sis and I are osteopenic.) and I recently was embarrassed to become iron deficient.

Now I just have to be diligent in posting what I eat!! :D

Update September 7, 2007

I have watched Dr. Cousens dvd. He has been raw vegan for more then 20 years. He isn't B12 deficiency but he emphasis that we should consider seriously to take B12 supplement. He found that the Nano B complexe supplement was absorbed by the body and helped to reverse the B12 deficiency. This is expensive but this is raw and vegan. I have been taking it and found a shift of energy in me. Many supplement don't get absorb with our body. He says that only 20% of vegan aren't B12 deficiency. Sometime, it takes years before we see the symptoms because we do have a reserve. He consumes many sea weeds vegetables he suspect that this might be the reason that he wasn't deficient but neither less, he recommend supplements. Especially pregnant wowan for their child could be born B12 deficiency.

My say, would be to get some blood test done occasionally. It is more natural to be healthy then not taking supplements if you need them. Yes B12, can be found in so many food but your body may not absorb it. Also, some meat eaters are as well B12 deficient.

-------------------------------------------------------
This is a myth that B12 can only be found in meat. Some of the greens has B12, e3lives is rich in B12, bee Pollen, and Nova Scotia dulse. You can always take an organic vegan B-complexe supplement. Also, sometime when we have been eating sad food for so long, our intestine will built up a protection but the downside is that we cannot absorb as much nutriments and including B12. By taking extra enzyme, apparently it clear up easier according to a nutritionist. It is always good to get our blood check once in a while but not to worry this is just to see if we need to make adjustment. Make sure to eat as much variety as you can, so your body can learn which food contain the perfect nutriment for you and will create a desire to eat this. It cannot generate a craving to drink wheat grass juice if you never had this before.

Again, do not worry about all those myths. ALL the nutriments in meat can be found in the world of vegetal. Also the four groups of food that was thaught to us at school was paid by the dairy farm association. We do not need meet, or dairy or eggs or fish. Our body did adapt to this nutrition and for some people they aren't ready to go vegan. I have been vegetarian since 2000 and raw vegan since April 2007, i am perfectly fine, healthy and full of energy. I actually was in shoke to see how much energy i had left after hicking a mountain and going back down. This is amazing what that raw diet has done for me in such a small amount of time.

Best wishes on your journey.

p.s I would recommand that you take greens juice or smoothies everyday (Home made greens such wheat grass, spinach, kale, boston salad, greens of beets, greens of carrots, etc....) visit www.rawfamily.com

As Raw Angel Mom said, Dr. Cousens and also Dr. Brian Clement recommend the Nano B12, which I also take. Dr. Cousens says he isn't B12 deficient but he says that every one of the thousands of patients he's treated have been. Dr. Clement says B12 damage is irreversible and he recommends that everyone take the nano supplement.
