View Full Version : Serious Banana Addiction...Can you eat too much fruit??

My family is addicted to bananas. I have to go out at least twice a week and buy them by the bunches. My 2 year old will sometimes eat 3 or 4 in a day (whole and in smoothies). I've heard differing opinions about the sugar in fruit. Some say it's natural and you can have as much as you want. Others say even though it's the "good" kind of sugar you still shouldn't eat too many fruits in a day. If it was just the bananas I wouldn't sweat it, but we also eat several other fruits throughout the day in addition to our banana binging. We just love them! Is there are rule about the amount of fruit that is good to have daily or does it just depend on your individual body and needs??

If there is no obvious (negative) reaction or intolerance, then I'd say it's perfectly fine.

I have 3 to 4 bananas a day and don't get any ill effects from it - in fact I get such nice energy from starting my day with lovely delish bananas. I mean 4 bananas, that's, depending on the size, almost your daily intake of potassium - which I was very low on before the banana-surge! And it's a LOT of your fiber too, which I was low on too. Bananas are a God-send.

We go through at least 50 pounds of bananas alone per week. They are great. There is so much that you can do with them and they are so filling.
So keep on eating them!

i eat a lot too, but i try to buy organic- they do so many nasty things to make them look all nice yellow and pretty for us...
and it is a hybrid food, so it has more sugar than naturally supposed to... so i do try to not go Crazy about them  (i eat up to 4 a day still)

I love bananas too! I am eating them as snacks lately in addition to my smoothies where I use 2. I find it keeps my carb and sweet cravings at bay. I wouldn't worry about eating too much fruit, like Rawkinlocs said, unless you are having negative reactions.

I go through spells. In the fall/winter I couldn't get enough Avocados. After the avos it was oranges and grapefruits. Lately it's grapes. I literally can eat a pound of grapes in a day. I agree with Rawkinlocs. As long as things are "moving" and everyone is feeling great - why not? If you don't satisfy your desire you may slip back into eating SAD/CRAP foods. I'd rather eat a massive amount of raw foods then the other junk. At least the body can use these fruits and all...

Bananas constipate me, really ripe or not...and I don't know why. They just do. AND most of the time I have them blended with lots of water, so dehydration can't be the problem. SOO I enjoy them, but not very often :-|
OR I eat them when I'm REALLY stressed, because then I can..erm...poo out anything, because...oh nevermind I have stress problems hahaha

Bananas are my staple where I live. 8-10 bananas a day minimum usually, in the winter it increases due to nothing else available. Couldn't live without em.
There are some these days(juliano, etc) that disagree with bananas, carrots, etc. but they are living in a great climate and can afford to do so :D

I also LOVE bananas! I can't go a day without them. I probably eat 3-4 a day...but I could easily eat more!

Hello there,
You definitely don't need to worry about eating too much fruit. Fruit is our natural food! I live on fruit and have never felt better. Fruit is filling, meets our dietary needs perfectly, comes in natural packaging, is easy to transport, is affordable and delicious! YAY for fruit!!
Blessings,
Audrey

I buy my bananas in bulk. I have had people in the checkout ask me "Do you have a monkey?" I usually reply "yes, 2, me and my husband". I freeze most of them for desserts and smoothies.

I am all for bananas. I definetely think that fruit directly from the garden or orchard and wild fruit is much much better than transported bananas, but I do not have a garden and I live in the big city for now, so this is the best I can do right now. My four year old can eat 2.5 bananas at one sitting.

It is interesting the transformation in my mind that is occurring by eating and feeding my family more raw food. I had all these limitations for myself and my kids regarding our nutrition (such as: you can only have one, or just a small piece, or don't eat to many of those!) because deep down I knew that the food I was feeding my family wasn't optimum, even though I rarely ever gave them pure junk food. I find myself still thinking, should he really have a second smoothie or a third banana or whatever because I haven't retrained my thinking yet. Is this a "normal transition"? There can be too much of a good thing right? Moderation in all things they say! (Who are "they" anyway??) :)

Overeating is overeating, even on healthy things - Still gotta be careful, eat till full or satisfied and stop. One reason why mono eating is good, keeps us in line better ;)

yeah mono eating does tend to make me feel best or at least eating more simply if not mono.

Eating simply does make me feel great. But preparing raw food makes me happy, too. It's win-win!
...and I used to be a pessimist - hah! RAW really does change you.
Anyways, as for the bananas, I used to buy them in bulk (40 lbs) just for me. It'd take me a week or two to get through 'em, if I'm remembering right. Lately I've been eating a lot a lot of bananas again. One batch of ice cream for me is about 4 bananas, and sometimes I'll make it as much as three times a day.
I just bought a few bunches and put them in the freezer, but I'm not sure I can wait for them to freeze to try making ice cream out of them. I might even puree them and use the ice cream maker...
If anybody's addicted, it'd be me. But what's so wrong with being addicted to raw organic food?
