I'm thinking that the reason im not seeing as many benefits and changes as i would like to is because i had been eating anything i wanted to as long as it was raw. I have seen some benefits like less pimples, softer skin, less tired, more calm/motivated, etc but i feel like i could be experiencing a lot more. Today i ate all fresh fruit and fresh salads w/ avocado, alfalfa sprouts and other fresh veggies. For my salad dressing i use and LOVE fresh made salsa. the only fat i had was a few tsp of extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil. eating this way, i dont feel weighed down, i feel more vibrant or something. i mean, i loove the treats i make like raw fudge, raw cookies, etc or dried fruit and almond butter but i usually over eat those things way too much. I think it will be an exciting experiment to cut them out for september and see what happens. i was thinking of cutting out fruit but i think im gonna keep the fruit and target the culprit behind why i haven't been feeling as good lately. i plan on eating nuts, dried fruit, etc in the future but hopefully this can teach me to make those minimal treats instead of the majority of my calories.

Hey Samariah! You read my mind....I'm trying the exact same thing for September. I've been eating waaay too much of the dried fruits and nuts, and I find that when I get my fat from things like avocado or a little olive oil, I feel much lighter and just overall healthier. If you want to, maybe we could do it together.....you know, reporting on how it's going, and keeping eachother company in this endeavor! Anyway, let me know if you want to do that....I always find it helpful when I can talk to someone going through the same thing as I am!

exactly my plan! well i don't worry so much about dried fruits..well because i just don't buy them (i KNOW i'll overeat) and i've learned my lesson with nuts (OVEREATING again), so i'm eliminating them from September...:)

I have been wanting to do this too. We could do a September challenge and report how we all feel through the experiment and at the end of September. Some one will have to make a list of all the fats. Anyone game?
samariah
08-29-2007, 05:03 PM
Yes, lets do this! By list of fats, do you mean the fats we will eat? For fats I plan on just avocados and extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil.
Riiiya
08-29-2007, 06:31 PM
yeess let's do that :D
but then i assume NO dried fruit will be included? i would still want to have my dried figs in smoothies.. but since it's like 1 or 2 a day (every other day) i guess it wouldn't be too bad.

heeey Samariah and Shell! can I join in with you on this!? I as well want to try to eat no nuts, dried fruits or too much fat because I haven't been noticing as many positive results as I'd like.
We could all check in with eachother, etc.

- Avocado
- Coconut Oil
- Flaxseeds
- Tahini (I like to have 1 tablespoon a day mixed in with my sea veggies, its sooo good!)

I wanna join!
Fats I'll allow:
Coconut (whole, baby, I'll MAYBE do the oil.)
Avocado
maybe flaxseed oil if I find myself in need of a salad but without any avocado :)
Sounds good. What about green powders? Technically those are dehydrated...lol

hey this is cool to have a mini support system. ive been doing all fresh fruits and veggies, and little bit of coconut oil and avocado for the past two days and all ready i feel a big difference physically and mentally. all i ate today actually was fruit and coconut oil bc thats all i was hungry for. im just listening to my body i guess! its nice.

Yay! We have a mini-challenge! I've done this before, and I felt a million times better when I cut out nuts. They're just too much of a temptation for me to even buy! So, the fats I plan on consuming are: avocado, olive oil (only in dressing, and even then, not much of it), POSSIBLY coconut butter, actually, probably coconut butter 'cause it's mmm mmm good, and I can actually control myself with it!:D This is going to be an excellent compliment to the September 30 day challenge.....I'm pumped, ladies!
Riiiya
08-29-2007, 08:48 PM
This is a great mini-challenge, i'm definitely in. And so many people seem to notice more improvements without nuts (i think)
I'll allow these fats-
avocado
olive oil and raw olives
Coconut
and some sunflower seeds (i put some on salads and i never overeat since they don't taste all that great raw!)
oh! and cacao nibs (don't eat many at all, just add them here and there)
I don't think i'll exclude dried figs- i don't eat much at all, just one in a smoothie (i don't have raw honey and the agave nectar i bought last time was...suspicious- i'm not sure how real it is) - i hope it's not a crime :o

I'd like to join in as well. I was doing it, but slipped up for a few weeks and felt bad. I have started back this way again, but I think I'll need the support to stay that way.

im also excluding agave nectar, cocoa powder, flaxseed. i just remembered i have like some almond flour and other things still left over. should i use them up tomorrow before september or keep with what im doing? i dont like wasting things so i dont know.
yay so we have six people together on this. great!

just wondering... do seeds count as nuts?? because I like to have pumpkin seeds in my salad, I never over-due it on them and find they help fill me up so I am going to allow a serving of them in my salads.
I cant wait to start!!! september is soon. woohoo

hey guys - i'd like to join you
i'm doing only green smoothies until September 6th
and then i'm going to just to greens and fruit
fats i'm including:
avocado
I can tell that September will be a good month for all of us!!! :D
Nurse in the Raw
08-29-2007, 10:42 PM
Okay.....I am only eating avocado's a couple times a week and young coconuts on a daily basis in my smoothies. I don't really like the taste of coconut oil. All other fats are out for me.
This will be fun. I figure if we can have a mini challenge of some sort every month for the rest of our lives, we might just make it!! Just kidding.

I think im gonna use some of my left over almond flour and ground flaxseed to make a homemade face scrub/mask. i'm not really hungry for it so i might as well use it up someway.

I was wondering about that too.. but since there's no No-NUTS police, i feel it's absolutely fine to use those seeds- especially when you don't have problems overeating them :)
the main reason i want to do this is because certain foods- nuts and dried fruits- i DO overeat again and again

Riiiya - that's exactly what I think too. I actually plan on throwing a couple seeds on my salads from time to time, because I don't have any problem with them. The whole reason I'm trying this out, is because I, like you, and so many others (it seems) overeat nuts and (in my case) raisins, and I feel like it undermines what I feel is the whole point of going raw....to feel better, look better, be healthier, etc.
I'm excited that we're all in this together....Here's to making September the beginning of a beautiful friendship (with raw food, and eachother!)

I join in, although actually I am kind of doing it for two weeks now, except on some days I had small hanful of nuts, but no oils of any kind. Now I am eliminating nuts because I noticed how they affect my digestion - gas, and I also become very thirsty after eating them, even though I do not eat any condiments or salt for those two weeks too.
Fats I will use:
ground flaxseeds in the green smoothie
no more than half avocado a day(if I did not have a smoothie)
maybe some young coconut
I am trying to avoid any concentrated fat like oils too.

Im not going to put a strict cap on my fat amount. If i feel i need some more I'll have it but im going to keep it to coconut and avocado. two fats that make me feel good and coconut oil honestly gives me a lot of energy. nuts make me constipated, gassy and bloated and tired. dried fruit makes me break out and also is constipating and too sugary and idk. i enjoy it but not in the same way i relish a piece of fresh fruit. fresh fruit satisfies me but with dried fruit i always overeat and it never really satisfies. probly bc its all shriveled up with no water or anything. i'll stick to fresh, its much better for me.

That sounds like a great idea. I eat very simply now after several years of being raw and love the way it makes me feel. Keep us posted!

Just a quick tip for October or when you do eat nuts again - something that works for me. I count out 14 nuts (cashews or almonds) and that is my serving for the day. It's about a handful. Once I take those out, I put the bag in the fridge (in my now empty deli drawer) and don't take it out again until the next day. It's helped me not over eat. I get into trouble when I think "I can eat whatever I want as long as it's raw" b/c if I slip and go off raw, things get OUT OF CONTROL! :) Good luck to you. I am just aiming for a raw September...

aww thank you SO much!! you can actually read about my story here (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=4229055&blogID=279753339). I am going back to 100%, I vary between eating 80-100% Raw. sometimes cooked veggies but not so much. I try to avoid lots of nuts and dried fruits because I tend to over eat them and they cause digestive issues when I have too many.

soooo... no dehydrated food... like no flax seed crackers, onion breads... fajitas?? hmmmm... so you will be eating just fresh simple foods? like lots of salads and fruit? Hhhhhmmmmm.....
quite by accident I did salads the entire month of August (for the most part ... like 99.999%)... I didn't realize it until I was writing last night. and I can't eat fruit - it has EXTREMEMLY ADVERSE affects on my body.
I will most likey be HI simple foods.... very little dehydrated foods... no or hardly any nuts --- I'd actually like to participate - but I'm just not sure I can do another month of just salads!!! :o ...
I'll check in from time to time...
but I will allow coconut oil ... I'm loving that coconut oil! I'm also going to be fasting quite a bit too... so - actually I may be able to do this... hmmmm.... doesn it still count if I'm fasting rather than eating?

the clam linguini was not as good as it coulda been cuz dh was out of fresh parsley.... and he had to use canned clams... so I was very disappointed...

that didn't seem so good either!!

unlike other fats, your body immediately takes the coconut oil to the liver where it is converted into energy. it doesn't circulate through the blood like other fats too. i read that athletes use it for energy before doing whatever sport it is they do.

So far so good for me. Example of my daily intake:
Am...flax, apple, peach smoothie I drink on my way to work.
Lunch......green smoothie: kale, apple, flax, pear, peach smoothie. Dinner.......salad...red tipped lettuce or romaine, tomatoe, cucumber, celery, lemon or lime. main course:....cole slaw, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, nayonaise...wrapped in romaine lettuce.
Desert.....banana, sprinkle of vanilla powder made into a paste/pudding.
Yummm.
I don't use vanilla extracts because of the alcohol. It seems all extracts are made with alcohol.
I have been eating like this for several days now. I feel a little dizzy but otherwise fine. I think my body might be just getting used to eating like this.

I've been doing great! My typical day has been:
AM: Green Juice, young coconut
Brunch: baby carrots, or more green juice
Lunch: Big leafy salad
Snack: baby carrots, green juice
PM: Banana/cacao/green powder smoothie with coconut oil
I love my new juicer, can't ya tell? :)
Oh but I must say that I had 2 days of a few servings of macadamia nuts (darn those delicious little devils!), but not too many, and I guess it makes up for my lack of "last supper-ing" :)

Hey Gang! I have been thinking about doing this, too! Not just for September, specifically, but in general. It seems like I am not losing the weight I want to and I am thinking it is the nuts/dry fruit's, etc. that are the culprit. I am game! Being held accountable is an AWESOME thing!
