Are you the kind who follows recipes exactly or do you like to play it by ear, whatever you have on hand will do?

I vary between those two. I find that I love almost all the recipes in Alissa's book...except for a few spice choices. But sometimes I just don't have some of the necessary ingredients to make it exact, so, I wing it! Actually, as I read through Alissa's book last night, she gave me that idea. To start with her recipes and go from there.

Example: as I was making my raw pizza crust this morning, I didn't have celery so I threw in some summer squash I had on hand.

What do you do in your Raw Kitchen?

I'm totally a "by the seat of my pants" cook. A recipe for me is a suggestion, a place to start. I don't measure. Well, I measure with my hands or my eyes, but not usually with measuring cups and spoons. I go by smell and taste.

I think the summer squash will be a great addition to your pizza. I haven't tried to make pizza yet. I'm going to have to try it.

Honestly, raw pizza is one of my favs from Alissa's book and the sundried tomatoes are a must to get that pizza sauce flavor. It really is very satisfying and easy. Just a bit time consuming because the crust has to cook for a while, but I remedy this by starting that really early in the morning and then by evening, I'm good to add sauce, cheese and toppings. Yum! I can't wait!

The first time I make a recipe, I follow it pretty exact, then I go from there. I do find though that a lot of Alissa's recipes I continue to follow exactly, but there are some recipes that just beg to be changed, like flax crackers, which usually are "clean out the fridge" crackers.

That sounds almost exactly like me. The first time I pretty much am a "by the book" girl but the second time around (if there is a second time) I change it. Though I almost always change the spices when making a recipe. I like to tweak it to make it to my taste. :)

First time - almost by the book - but I will ALWAYS BUMP UP the garlic in EVERY RECIPE - cuz dh and I are major garlic'aholics!! but I figure I want try to follow the recipe as close as possible so I will know how I want to (or if I want to) tweak it next time.

but I'm finding that's not happening ... I find myself tweaking many of the recipes first time around -- and even becoming quite adventurous and substituting items when I find I don't have one of the ingredients....

I really enjoy un~cooking! I find it lots of fun! :D

So far I use the recipe as it stands once, then start playing with it to suit my own tastes. Lots of substitutions though, as I don't have access to agave nectar, coconut oil etc.

I used to be a strict recipe follower (at least the first time!) but find myself "tweaking" almost every recipe now. I can't find macademia nuts, which is called for in A LOT of recipes! I end up substituting cashews, which work just fine. (Although, I guess I've never tasted the recipe with macademias, so who knows!:D )

Since I've gone raw, I've loved making up my OWN recipes!! Who would've thunk!!!

I was amazed and surprised to come home yesterday from a long, hard, 12hrs at work to find my partner making up her own (raw) recipe for me!! I was really touched! AND I enjoyed eating it!! It was a kind of nutty coleslaw, made with cashews, onions, cabbage and garlic.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one winging it! :p
I'm trying to develope an idea of what my tastebuds like and what my body digests well. Some of my combos aren't as good as others. But I'll keep trying.
I think I like recipes that don't require the dehydrator the best. Like the mock salmon and such. I just made that today and stuffed endive leaves with it. Holy heck, that was good stuff! :D And way too easy by comparison to other recipes.
I also seem to digest things better without a lot of nuts. So, I find myself adding more veggies in recipes to fill in for all the nuts.
Live and learn, right!?!?!

Thanks for all the replies {and the compliment}.

Best thing about Raw is you get to Play with your food. :p

I started by using recipes but now I wing mostly everything. In fact, I really need to write more things down.:D
