I have to be honest. I wasn't expecting a very good end result but these are amazing. I sliced the sweet potato extremely thin with a knife (I'll use a veggie peeler next time ot avoid blisters), soaked it in cold sea salt water for about 6 hours then placed them in a single layer in the dehydrator with nutritional yeast sprinkled over top while they were still wet.

Only about 4 hours later.... soooooooo good! They're slightly sweet and cheesy. This is exactly what I needed today. I have to run to the store after work and get some more sweet potatoes!

SO happy to hear this. I have a couple of sweet potatoes that I bought for this very purpose. I'm off to go make some NOW!

What is nutritional yeast . . . is it yeast with which one bakes bread? Or is it brewers yeast to which I am highly allergic?

YUMM!!! Thanks for posting! I used to like the sweet potato fries (cooked) dipped in Mayo at pubs or restaurants. Never made chips raw from Sweet Potatoes.

I 'm thinking they'd be good with coarse celtic salt and some raw mayo.

styerksy, nutritional yeast is very different than bread yeast. It is pasteurized after culture so you have no active culture yeast. It is grown on molasses generally. It adds a "cheesy" taste to things. It is used in raw cuisine in small amounts as a non-raw seasoning. Some nutritional yeast is also fortified with B-12, some is not.

Must be available in HFS? Sounds like something I would like a lot.

Speaking of, does anyone have any brand recommendations for nutritional yeast? I notice it's always kind of a lottery on if I'm gonna get some good stuff or not. Any tried-&-true brands?

I only use KAL brand. It tastes just like cheese to me and does have the B-12, which is the original reason I started using it. Whenever I want a quick cheesy flavor, I just mix some with olive oil and am good to go. I also add it to my dog's food for extra nutrition.

Yes it is Brewers Yeast. It has Phenylalanine in it, which does not agree with me...

brewers yeast and nutritional yeast are two totally different things. though sometimes people or companies erroneously use the terms in a not totally representative fashion.

Brewer's yeast is the leftover yeast after the brewing process. It is also dead and inactivated.

Nutritional yeast is grown specifically as a food crop.

sty, you might still be allergic, if you have a truly diagnosed mold allergy or something. You could check with your physician or whomever directed you away from brewer's yeast before seeing if it's ok to get nutritional yeast, then I would say get a really good source of nutritional yeast.

Brewer's yeast is bitter in taste and should not be confused with baker's yeast, nutritional yeast, or torula yeast as these forms of yeast are low in chromium.

I do have a diagnosed allergy to mold. So I think I will stay away from Nutritional Yeast. Thank you so much.

I made some sweet potato chips yesterday and for 2 potatoes I used about
1 1/2 T. olive oil, some onion powder, chili podwer, garlic powder, salt, cumin and about 1 T. maple syrup. I don't use agave or honey for anything I want to dry crisp because it always stays sticky.

The were awesome..BBQ Chips!!! The only problem was that they dissapear TOO fast!!!! What a great chip fix though!!:D
