I'm wondering if a VitaMix is necessary for the green smoothies. I only have a cheap $30 blender. Is that good enough or should I wait until I can afford a better blender?

You can get by with the cheaper blender - BUT there is a world of difference in what the Vitamix will do. A cheaper blender won't really break down the greens as well and the taste(or texture) might not be as appealing.
I avoided greens in my cheap blender for years cause I disliked it so much. A leaf or two of romaine and Bananas with water worked fine though. I finally broke down and bought a Vitamix and was amazed how much greens I can fit in and still have a liquid drink that goes down much more easily.

It is for me! The consistency of my green smoothies would burn up a cheapie blender. And now that I don't cook and use the fuel for that - it has paid for itself!

Don't wait to eat/drink green smoothies. Just add more liquid!!!

I know it's a BIG expense - but it's the best purchase I have ever made. I burned out my yuppy Chrome Waring blender as I use a blender a minimum of once a day for green smoothies for the whole family. I also make cookies, nut butter, and the Chocolate ice cream I just posted on the food picture thread. It pureed the unsoaked cashews for the recipe in under 60 seconds to a completely smooth custard!
We go through lots of green smoothies and each time I make and entire VM containerful. With a full half the conatiner with all kind of greens and it liquifies them to nothing, no bits.
In her book Green For Life V. Boutenco talks about how our bodies no longer have the enzymes to break down greens as it once did so you actually asimilate much more nutrients from blending in a VM than from a salad. The VM breaks down the leaves to a piont the domaestic blenders do not.
I bought mine at a Costco demo for $369. Look on their site for the demo schedual on a new one is cheaper than full price. I have had no need for the dry mixing bowl they offer but I did just buy ther new little bowl for small quantities.
I am always amazed at the VM. I needed to grind up four whole star anise and dont have a small mill so I thought I would try the huge VM on the off chance it would work. IT worked so well I was left with nothing but DUST coating the bowl and no visable anise bits anywhere; it was as if they had vanished!
Hope this helps!

I was content with my cheap blender - that is, until I got my vitamix. AND as Lucy says, it pays for itself over the long run. ~ Cathy

Thanks for all the replies. I can't really afford one right now, but maybe I will get one for xmas. But, nice to know that it really is a good blender. Thanks, again!
