Ok, I was super excited to try one of these Thai Coconuts after hearing so many people rave about them, and I finally found them at a health food store.
So....What is the texture supposed to be like compared to a "regular" coconut???
I was horrified! I'm not sure if I bought a bad one, or if this was a good one, being the first one I had ever seen.
The meat was white/grey and slimy like jello. Is this normal??
I took one bite, spit it out and was nauseated the rest of the night just thinking about it! Never want to see another coconut of any kind for the rest of my life!!! :p
Any info you could provide me would be lovely.
Thanks,
-Amy

A very young coconut will have a jelly-like consistency. The flesh is sometimes even purple hued. But if it did not taste good then it probably wasn't. Don't give up! Baby coconuts (good ones anyway:rolleyes: ) are wonderful.

They never will have the exact consistency of a mature coconut. You can usually just use a spoon to get the meat out.

I thought I felt a disturbance in the force. Surely you aren't serious. Have you tried them in a chocolate banana milkshake? How about makinng some pudding? It's ok. leaves more for me. :D :p

I had one yesterday for the first time and didn't care for it at all. It wasn't the texture. It was the taste of the meat and the juice. :(

I DO however like the juice from them. It's the pulp (can't - WON'T call it meat) that I don't care for. Yes, have tried it in different things. Just isn't worth the expense, the opening of it and all for me. Sorry - but yep, more for you Chai!!!
And you're welcome for that! heh heh!!!

Ok, 'pulp' then. :)

The juice tasted like what I would imagine watered down Clorox bleach to taste like.

I personally love young coconuts but my husband says that the coconut water tastes like soap water LOL! Maybe an acquired taste!

Yes, soap water would be another description. LOL!

More for me too! I think coconuts are nature's best invention. I make cheesecake with the 'meat' and use the water as a 'gatorade'.
