Hi all,
A lot of reference is made here to eating or drinking your greens. Am I right in saying everyone is talking about stuff like spinach, kale and any dark leaf vegetable? I tryed carrrot and spinach juice today and didn't think it was bad. What does everyone put in their green drink? Thanks. :)
Hi Curtis,
You are correct. Anything with a rich chlorophyll content. Dark green leafy vegetables are said to be good for rebuilding healthy tissue and revitalizing the blood. The chlorophyll in plants is almost identical to hemoglobin in blood. The only differance is that the hemoglobin molocule has iron at its center and chlorophyll has magnesium at its center.
Green drinks can contain just about any combination you can stand. I have to cut mine with carrot and apple cause I'm not real fond of the taste yet. But you can use spinach, collards, turnip greens, parsley, danelion, kale, celery, beet greens, etc.

I hate the dark leafy greens but even I can stand them mixed with carrot and apple juice!

Hi all,
I have a champion juicer which is great for carrots, apples, etc., but not for greens.
What do you all do to juice your greens? Maybe I could put mine through the Champion? (even though the book says it doesn't work). Or could I put it in my food processor and chop it up then put it in my Champion?

I have juiced greens and even wheatgrass in the Champion. I had to put the pulp through an additional time to fully extract the juice, but it is worth it. Try it and see how you like it, Helen! :)

Thank you ConsciousCuisine,
I was afraid I mess my machine up if I did it. I'll give it a try. I may try some spinage in some carrot and apple juice and see how I like it. I'm not found of greens (I do like my avocado wraps in greenleaf lettuce leaves), but since Kristi doesn't like greens either and can tolerate it in her carrot/apple juice, I'll try this combo first. Thanks Kristi.

I haven't done much juicing of greens but lately I have been making a lot of smoothies or soups and have really been loving it. Sometimes I will just throw a whole bunch of spinach in the blender with some orange juice or water and then put lots of garlic and other spices in it and it's delicious. Today I made soup with cucumber, spinach, avocado, garlic, ginger and manior root and it turned out so yummy. I added some carrot and a few other things I had laying around too and it seemed like it was good no matter what I put in it. Experimentation is key so just try out all sorts of combos. If you are juicing like the others said it makes it easy to go down if you mix it with something sweet like carrot or apple juice. Anyway have fun with your greens and make them as yummy as you can so you eat more and more of them!

Thanks Analeah,
I know I need more greens, so will experiment and see what happens.

Yeah definately experiment and have fun with it! :D I found spinach and avocado and any spices you prefer to be very palatable. I haven't tried using Kale or other leafy greens but I think I will try it out next time I go to the market.

I need more green leafy juice! Thanks for the reminder. I was lucky to get to Omaha last week where they have a wild oats...I loaded up on collard and chard greens...stuff I can't find anywhere in Des Moines. But it's getting old faster than I can eat it...time to juice the remainder I think!
It was the first time I tried collard greens...love them!!! Collard rolls with a bit of nut cheeze, shoe stringed red pepper and scallions...it tasted gourmet!

Good job, Curtis! I finally got my juicer and today I went to my local farmer's market. I can not tell you how amusing all of this is for this not so long ago Snickers-is-a-whole-food eater. So I get a bunch of VERY dark leafy things. I have no idea... Black Kale? I am rolling my eyes to the ceiling. I don't have a clue, but they are dark, organic and very leafy. I decide I'm on the right path and proceed to get THREE red delicious apples - the last thing I want to do is TASTE anything green :D !!! I got a gorgeous carrot (thinking of you Edda) and off I went to see how this would all turn out. Don't you know it was absolutely delicious? Now for a treat I had a 'live foods' brownie. WHY didn't anyone tell me these existed in the world???? Just kidding! I died on the spot and went to heaven, it was definitely great. The one I had was hazelnut, but they had lots of other flavors. Ok Curtis, don't know if I answered your question or not, but I think the important thing is to make your green drink something you love - otherwise you're not going to drink it.
Best wishes always
and love to all,
Melissa

I did juice some carrots and apples this morning and didn't feel like making another juice this evening (to add in the spinach this time). So instead, I made my avocado wraps. I use greenleaf lettuce leaves. I mash up an avocado and this time I chopped up some spinach and mixed it in my avocado before spreading it on my lettuce leaves. Yummy.
Tomorrow morning I'll try the carrot/apple/spinach juice.
I'm going to work hard to incorporated greens into my diet whenever possible.

Hi Helen,
I also have a champion and I know what you mean. What works for me is I put the tomatos and apples thru after the greens, they seem to clear out everything thats in there. Cucumbers work as well. I usually reserve to go thru after the greens and one for after the carrots (which also seem to clog up in the champion). Tomatos, cukes and apples seems to really push everything thru well. I hope this helps.
Peace.
Todd

Melissa,
The best treat I've had so far is a pecan pie square from EatRaw.com. It was absolutely delicious....not something I can keep around the house.
I also love the Mexican flax crackers from the same place. I need to learn how to make those. I'm so glad you liked your juice.

Hi Todd,
Thanks so much!!! I was just wondering what order I should juice each piece of fruit/veggie. I will do my greens first, then my carrots, then my apples.

I put in the greens, then the carrot, then the apples - it really was delicious - it tasted much more like apple juice than the dark green veggies it looked like.
Thanks Edda - I saw the pecan squares on the eatraw website - they look yummy. I'm going back for more brownies, but I'm getting one for my dh and more for my dd. My dh will love it, my dd will probably look at me funny and give it back to me. Sadly, I brought her up on SAD and she will not give it up without a fight. All I can do is be an example... which I am really trying to be!!!
Love to all,
Melissa

Does anyone know if there are kinds of greens that are not okay to juice? Is it okay to juice the tops from carrots and celery etc? Are these healthy to juice (in terms of vitamins and minerals etc)?
