I just got this from a friend. The USDA rejected the Almond Boards request for an extension to the Almond Pasteurization ruling which will take effect Sept 1, 2007. :(
So, please be aware of what you buy. They want to pasteurize with PPO which is a chemical used to make bowling balls!
See http://cornucopia.org/index.php/usda-rejects-almond-boards-request-for-delay-of-controversial-treatment-plan/
for the full news release for more info.

Thanks for the update. Raw almonds had to kind of grow on me as I really didn't like them at first. When I followed the news and contacted the CA Almond Board last year, it was my understanding that all members were voluntarily processing their almonds using propolyene oxide. Have curtailed my use drastically.
My feeling on this is that the processing of almonds at high temperatures to kill unhealthy organisms is sad--sad because this opens a wider window of carelessness in my opinion. Why cannot almonds simply be handled from the picking to the packing with more care? Too expensive to take the extra step? Bottom line is--it is the bottom line. I choose to spend my dollars and vote my food choice vote for a healthier alternative.
If anyone knows of a contact for the FDA to voice a consumer opinion, that would be a great post and certainly pull a great number of concerned consumers from this site alone.
Sorry if this sounds soapbox--hate when "corporate america" decides it will decide for all consumers for their own good.

Actually it is the USDA that you should be complaining to not the FDA.
Here the contact info:
Secretary Mike Johanns:
Telephone: 202-720-3631
Fax: 202-720-2166
E-mail: Mike.Johanns@usda.gov and agsec@usda.gov
Of course we have been complaining to his guys for many months and obviously they don't care otherwise they might have approved the extension.
But giving up is no good either.
On the Cornucopia site they have a link just for the Almond Issue - there is information on there or what sort of actions you can take.

My guess is yes. I not sure about how the organics are going to approach this. Techincally, organic should mean chemical free but my guess is that it is the small organic farmers who could not get the equipment in time for the deadline (the organics were planning to heat pasteurize to avoid using chemicals but the equipment is expensive - the chemical method is cheaper).
But almond butter is made from the same almonds you would buy raw so yes - be carefully of almond butter too.

i think that the fda is a criminal organization and they have something to gain from us being sick, foggy, and asleep, while the governments of the world take over and subject us all to their control. so ridiculous. well, at least all we need is twigs and berries so we can run away to the forest when they enact martial law lol.

The good news is that only the almond processors are required to kill the almonds. You will still be able to buy direct from growers (even online) and get the same great, clean, organic almonds. :)
