So y'all know that my training started off again. Three hourrs a day etc.
However, I do need to find something that can replace gatorade. Meaning lots of minerals but not heavy, since I'll be using it during my training.
Please guys, any suggestions would be AWESOME.
thanks!!

I have heard that the juice of fresh raw young coconuts is a good replacement for sports drinks.

Oh my gosh, so refreshing! I drink it during/after my 30 mile bicycle rides. Prior to raw, I was drinking the packaged VitaCoco coconut water. I didn't know how easy it was to get water from young coconuts. Now I get my own fresh from the coconut and it tastes amazing, especially when you are hot and thirsty. From the VitACoco package - "Inside every young coconut is a refreshing electrolyte replacing beverage that far surpasses every artificial sports drink. Coconut water is fat-free and an excellent source of potassium, manganese and magnesium. In fact, this 100% pure life enhancing beverage has also been proven to increase vitality, ease digestion, cure hangovers and literally save people's lives. So the next time you exercise, party too hard, or get stranded on an island, bring some Vita Coco." Now I am not trying to advertise for this brand - get yours directly from the young coconut - it's so much better!

What about watermelon and lemons put into a high speed blender with ice? I have made this before and added some salt even for the potassium and it was delish. The regualr store bought stuff makes me very sick, so this is what I have used to replace it.:D
here's another substitute:
water
lemon or lime juice
agave
sea salt

for a gatorade type replacement, i ditto the coconut water. also, juice lots of celery, a cucumber, and a handful of grapes or a green aple. that should do the trick.

Pris, Can you tell me what you are training for? My daughter practices 3-4 hours a day (except on Sundays) for her high school swim team. She's been raw for a month, like me! She can now keep up and sometimes even pass the fastest swimmer on the team. She could not do this last season. But this is all new to her and she'd love some of your input as to athleticism and raw food diet. Thank you.

Gosh I'd be more than happy to help.
I've been a rower all my life, but since I attend a fine arts high school, it's been kind of tough to keep training, but this summer I went back to it full out. I've been trained by several athletics trainers for the past three months, and will start marathin training in the fall.
I find that a raw food diet kicks your energy up a whole lot when you're training. I specially recommend eating sweet fruits before training, things like bananas or dried fruit. make sure she eats that about two hours before though, and never eat directly after any kind of training. Always wait about an hour, or you'll get super dizzy. It seems weird, but I find myself getting a whole lot more dehydrated than I used to on a raw food diet. So make sure she drinks plenty water, and apparently coconut water as well.
I'm always here to help. So feel free to ask, I'll keep you posted on my training and experience! =]

O I should also mention that as her training gets harder, she'll need to start tweaking her diet a bit to fit her athletic needs. She'll have to add things like oils and plenty of greens, concentrate on the lighter fruits, and such. Have avocados everyday, they're just a vitamin bomb!=]
But again, she'll realize this as her body starts craving these things.
give her my support for me!

doesnt salt dehydrate?
hmm. i'm not too sure about that. My coaches always put salt in my energy drinks to help me keep the minerals in.
but i'll look into that and let you know!

i cant swim in chlorinated pools anymore otherwise i get super dizzy. one undesirable sideaffect of raw.. even though its better to be aware of the toxins it cuts out a big excersise.

Pris, thanks for getting back with me. My daughter wondered why one gets dizzy on raw eating before an hour's time after a tough practice?
So you've done a great dealing of rowing, attend a fine arts high school AND you're on a raw diet? Wow, how cool is that? I was doing all sorts of damaging/stupid stuff when I was in high school ...
I'll see if I can get my daughter (she'll be a junior in high school this year) to come on the boards and chat with you ... she read your entries and appreciated them much ... I fix her a green smoothie before practice although it's one hour before practice because she begins at 7 a.m. Lately I've been making 1/2 mango, 1/2 banana, 4 leafs romaine and a little agave, some ice and, of course, a straw.:) Is the banana too heavy of a fruit for before practice? Something tells me it is.
Okay, thanks again.

rawsurfer ... does the chlorine bother you more now that you are on raw because it is so toxic and you are all fresh and clean? This won't be too good if this happens with my daughter. She's been swimming since a little kid and she plays water polo too ... fill me in when you get a chance ...

Wow, thanks for the info Pris! I've noticed I get dehydrated faster too, I think it's probably also because we get more sensitive to our bodies needs.
In Aggressive Health by Mike Nash (I LOVE that book) he recommends celery/cucumber/kale juice with a pinch of salt after a workout. Or coconut water, YUM!
