Any veggie or fruit in it's natural just-picked form is raw. You really should think about getting Alissa's book. It will help you with most if not all of your questions, though of course you are welcome to ask questions here. I just think the book Living on Live Food would help you tremendously as you learn about raw.

The lettuce you would not want to buy is iceberg lettuce.

Hope that helps. :)

May I ask why?

Just not as many nutrients. It's not so much that it's "bad" for you, as I understand it, but that you are getting mostly water. I can relate my own experience: we were invited out to eat with my husband's family last year (my first round of trying to go raw:o ) to Olive Garden. We knew there wasn't too much raw so we just ordered the endless salad which turned out to be all iceberg lettuce. We ate TONS of it with only olive oil and lemon juice (not the house dressing) and we just couldn't get full. And afterwards we both became very ill. It's not that way with rich greens.

From a web site: "Iceberg lettuce is 90% water and has very little flavor, and almost no nutrients."

From what I have read, the darker the green, the better the nutrition.:)

any produce on the produce section is raw. I'd stay away from the iceburg lettuce and white button mushrooms. Both because they don't have many nutrients. Potatoes raw are edible, but sometimes too starchy for somes. Artichokes...not sure how you can eat those raw. Some other random veggies may be difficult to have raw, but I mean VERY random ones that not many people use to cook with anyway. As for salads, add anything you want! Usually a base of greens, something acedic (usually tomatoes), some unsweet fruits, veggies, whatever you want! Sprouts are good to add on top. As for dressings some make their own dressings with the fat in them, while others like it simple and just use lemon juice as a dressing.

No, storebought dressings are not raw. You can use things like apple cider vinegar, agave nectar, avocado (or guacamole,) olive oil, lemon juice, fresh squeezed orange, or anything like that... and make your own dressing.

You can get alissa's book on her web site www.alissacohen.com. Her book is about $30. And sorry, no bottles dressing if you are going to be 100% raw. If you don't know a lot about being raw, I would suggest that you start adding more raw foods to your diet first, before you try to be 100% raw. A good book for transition stages is Natilia Rose's Raw Food Detox Diet. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-4956795-6292116?initialSearch=1&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=raw+food+detox+diet&Go.x=8&Go.y=7 But still get Alissa's book, the Rose book have good ideas, but not a lot of good recipies. Alissa's book have wonderful recipies to keep you on raw and wanting to be raw and eat more raw.

Yes. Those are fine. However, some olive oils are not raw. I don't know how to tell if the one you have is raw or not. I just buy extra virgin and don't worry about it.

Ross - You can search the internet for raw dressing recipes. There is also a search function on this site. I find that I like a little bit more than olive oil and lemon on my salad.

Cold pressed olive oil is best in my opinion. It will say it on the bottle. If you stick to the produce section of the store, you are most likely eating all raw food.

Ross,

If you can't afford to buy a raw foods book right now, try going to your local library and see if they have any you can check out. A lot of the raw recipe books have explanations about what is/isn't raw and other frequently asked questions.

Also, here are a few websites I found that might help explain some of your questions if they aren't answered here:

http://www.living-foods.com/faq.html
http://www.alissacohen.com/faqs.html
http://www.shazzie.com/raw/articles/about_raw_food.shtml
http://www.healthfree.com/raw_food_faq.html

Hope that helps :)
