You need:

- a blender
- water
- fruit (I use 2 bananas)
- greens (I use spinach or lettuce or whatever I have in the fridge)
- I add an avocado too

Blend for a minute or two.

There are many ways of making a green smoothie but I like to keep it simple: the more stuff there is in it, the worse it tastes to me. The above recipe will make it taste pretty sweet, but you'll have to experiment with it.

I think this is a good newbie Green smoothie:
Get 2 stalks of kale, but break the stalks off (I use curly kale, but it doesn't matter. Curly is all I can get around here)
1 cup blueberries
1 cup frozen berry mix, run in strainer under water to defrost most of the way
a couple ice cubes
3 "scoops" stevia (It's a miniscule amount, you can use honey or agave instead, to your preference)

Blend well. I think it's a very BLAND green taste in the back ground, mostly berry flavored. It's the best one I've ever made, taste wise.

If you think you can handle it after tasting, add the stalks afterwards.

This morning's green smoothie was made from water, 2-3 handfuls of dandelion greens, a few chunks of frozen pineapple, strawberries, and 1 banana. Yum!! I also add MSM and spirulina ~ Cathy

Ross, I just started doing green smoothies a couple of days ago and I didn't follow any recipe. I would advise starting out to follow one of the other poster's tried and true recipes. I listened to Victoria's interview on the raw summit and skipped directly to the dandelion greens. I threw a whole head in the blender! I had to put in three bananas, two mangoes and almost half a bag of frozen raspberries to make it palatable. But, I was pretty high off it, too so if you don't mind using all that fruit, its pretty awesome to make it super, super green.:p

Ross, if I'm not mistaken, Crystal Light has Aspartame in it, doesn't it?
If so, you should not be drinking it. That stuff is poison to your body!

I'd do fresh OJ to make it raw. Anything premade is most likely NOT raw. It has been pasturized and had nutrients zapped out. Not to mention flavor! If you don't have one, I'd get a simple cheap orange juicer. Just a plastic hand one will do. Lemonades are all cooked unless you juice your own. Crystal lite does have aspartame or maybe now splenda in it. BAD stuff!! I'd cut that out if I were you. Do you drink that basically as your water? Do you not like plain water? Just wondering. Umm, lemon water is good. Just use that citris juicer and juice the lemons on it and add a lot of water. It's good! Oh, slicing up cucumber and letting it sit in the water makes yummy cucumber water. Mint water is good too.

If you have $50 I would recommend go to Walmart and get a wide mouth juicer. That will make your lemonade making very easy. You can throw the whole lemon in the top. It will eliminate tedious cutting with other juicers as well. It won't do wheat grass but it is good starter equipment. Personally I don't do smoothies like people here do because I can't handle all that fruit. I will juice okra or greens and add the juice to something in the blender or just tough it out and drink the juice even though some of it tastes kind of nasty to me.

I don't care for bananas much but they are a really good portable food for long hours at work when you know that as a raw foodist you have to eat more often and get filled up so that the hunger does not affect your work.

Stevia is an alternate sweetener you can get at the health food store (HFS). Lots of people here use agave.

A good website is www.rawfoodexplained.com that gets more into the reasons why some foods are not good for you. Not that I personally agree with everything on the site but it is a good resource regardless.

Another good website to use for research purposes is www.newstarget.com where you will find many articles to substantiate what the people here are telling you.

So I hope that I have not offended by posting these sites because although they do not advocate raw Alissa Cohen style - they do provide education and validation of raw choices.

Yes sugar and equal are very bad.

Go to News Target website posted above and use search bar and I am sure you will find articles galore explaining why.

The peel of the lemon is called the zest and some recipes both raw and SAD require it. They now say that there is nutrition in it and personally I like it because it adds an extra thirst quenching zing to my water.

If you blend if for long enough it will get smooth, I usually run my blender for 2 or 3 minutes to make a smoothie. Just put some water in it. I would say that even if you don't like banana, you can't really taste it in a smoothie, it just works really well as a base. Mostly the taste will be the fruit you put in it, I like to put berries and peaches in mine.
