View Full Version : Are green smoothies THAT good?
Since I started drinking green smoothies every day (I'm up to two a day now the past 4 days) I no longer want clover sprouts or carrots on my salads. I used to absolutely have to have them, but now I really don't care for them.
Am thinking that the burst of nutrients in the greens is giving me what I used to need to get from carrots and sprouts. Thoughts?

You got it! The minute they (GS's) hit your tongue, your body is starting to absorb them. I suggest you read the below-mentioned book.

Yes, they are that good!
They are amazing, also, in how they zap all of your cravings.
Great stuff!

Because YOU are making them taste that bad. I refuse to drink or eat anything that tastes bad.
I make mine sweet.

When I first made a few, they did taste bad to me. I found that after a few days, I started to crave them. Now I love the taste of them and they really do zap the cravings like someone else just mentioned.
Just give 'em a fair chance. I think you'll change your mind.

My first green smoothie was not so great ... second, third, etc. very good ... here's today's recipe and it was awesome!
7-8 organic romaine leafs
1 big organic banana
1 big organic mango
some agave to taste (about 2-3 tablespoons)
7-8 ice cubes crushed up in drink
Poured over a couple cubes in a very cool glass ... and walla ... mighty tasty stuff. My daughter had one today before swim practice (high school team) and she said she can now keep up with the fastest girl on the team. She used to not even be in the same lane. In fact, in dryland (running, etc.) today she passed them ALL up. (She's been raw with me going on four weeks.) Good stuff!

Ross, look at above recipe. That's a green smoothie although I forgot to put that you blend all that stuff up in a blender. Sorry! Oh, and the green part of green smoothie refers to the romaine in the case of the recipe I posted.

This morning I had a Larabar instead of my usual green smoothie because I was in a hurry and my stomach has felt "not right" all day. I have had trouble going to the bathroom and my head hurts. I won't do that again.

They zap cravings for everything except green smoothies. My body feels off if I don't have a smoothie or my blended salad (savory green smoothie eaten like soup).

When I first started drinking green smoothies, I had 3 large kale leaves and 2 bananas blended w/water, and it tasted perfect. As I got used to it, I increased the amount of kale to 1/2 bunch (still w/just 2 nanas). You have to work your way up to more greens, esp. greens like kale, which are pretty bitter.
However, this morning I had a spinach smoothie, 2 very large handfuls of spinach w/2 bananas, and it was much sweeter than the kale smoothie. You might try doing spinach smoothies for a week or two, since they seem to taste sweeter, and get your tastebuds used to greens.
Right now I'm having 2 gs a day, the first w/2 nanas and the second w/two servings other fruit, 2 peaches or 1 peach and a cup of grapes. Not quite as sweet as bananas, but I want to vary my diet as much as possible. Still taste good.
Lucy (Veganforlife)--I am planning to read the book Green for Life. I actually first heard about green smoothies in Victoria's book 12 Steps to Raw.
Thanks everyone for the replies!

thanks!
I've actually started to get this figured out. :)
i'm slowly added more and more lettuce and I'm getting used to it. I just need pick the fruit i put in it better. No apples. that was my mistake. ick.
red oranges and blackberries with raw honey have been the best so far. With kale of course. :)

i'm too affraid to put kale in my smoothies. my mom always says you have to cook it because of the oxalic acid! well i just looked up more on oxalic acid and it said that kale is actually low in it, and parsley (what i have been adding to my smoothies) is high in it!? hmmph:rolleyes:
well this is my GS
2 peaches
2 handfuls greens
2 bananas
1 nectarine
water
agave sometimes
this makes enough for me and my boyfriend to share.

On another thread, someone recently made the point that if we quit eating everything that supposedly is problematic in some way, we'd all starve. ;)
IMO cooking kale makes it more toxic than the oxalic acid it contains raw.
