View Full Version : Anyone else here that can live without nuts?

I wasn't a big nut eater before raw and I can still live without them. I can't tell the difference between the taste of almonds, walnuts or pecans in recipes. I've never been one to snack on nuts by themselves. The only time I eat them now is if they're mixed with something else in a recipe, like for a crust or a chocolate dish. It wasn't hard for me to reduce my intake after a couple of weeks. I could imagine that if someone loved nuts, it would be more difficult though.

Are there others here who can take them or leave them? I, personally, don't see anything wrong with not eating nuts if you're getting good oils from other foods.

if they're not in the house, i don't need them or eat them. but once i buy them, the bag or container is gone in a few days. eeek! same with dried fruit, especially raisins. i think i'm just going to stop buying them, unless i need them for a recipe, but i started my diet off simple so i never actually needed any of those transitioning recipes to help me out...

I like raisins more than nuts. Sometimes I'll eat a couple of tablespoons of raisins if I'm hungry later in the evening. That usually takes care of it. I also may take a little to work with me. I have dried cherries too, but I like raisins better.

I mainly use them in recipes but for a lot of things (like pie crusts, cookies, etc.) I'll use oat groats ground up instead of nuts.

I don't eat them by the handful either unless I just get a taste for them but that's pretty rare. When I first started out with raw, I used to eat nuts and trail mixes with nuts ALL the time and it really helped me stay satiated. But now, I just don't have as much desire for them anymore, again, except in some recipes...mainly milks, shakes, cheeses...stuff where they're really blended up well. Even when I make like the Mock Salmon Pate', I'll use a small amount of walnuts and the rest, carrots and it's delicious!

I use raw almonds and coconuts (is that a nut ? I've always wondered).
I use raw sunflower seeds.
I get plenty of oil and fat from avocados.

I like nuts, but mainly use them in a few recipes (mostly desserts and a few other staples such as dressing and pate) and I always have a baggie full of raw trail mix in my bag for those just in case moments so I know I won't be stuck anywhere without something raw.

I agree with ya on the nuts, I tried Ani Phyo's Breakfast scramble and wanted to puke, the nuts really turned me off. Now don't get me wrong I like nuts but not enough to eat them like an omelet or something. I have to say that I did like the crust for the chocolate pudding creme pie I found on this bored, the crust was made of walnuts, it was very good, but at the same time I would only eat 1 slice a day of the pie but it was so good and rich.

I am huge! on nuts right now. i wish I could say otherwise, but it's not the truth.

in the early days of my raw, my bf went out and got all sorts of nuts for me. i've been working my way through them slowly but surely...When they're finally gone, I'm not buying any more.

too tempting!

At first I really liked them but to use in recipes like ice cream or especially the walnut taco meat recipe, but I noticed I was overeating them, for example, having walnut taco meat every day for three days cuz it was all i was craving. Afterwards though, when I ran out of walnuts, I just stopped buying them cuz all those nuts were making me feel almost lethargic. Plus they're crazy expensive where I get them from! :) But yeah I think it'll be awhile before I start buying them again.

I stopped eating nuts years ago because I did not find them as vital and sustaining a food as fresh, raw fruit. Just my experience......and I'm certainly glad I did.

i like nuts, especially cashews and almonds and almond butter but i tend to eat way too many when i buy them so i dont buy them very often. plus they make me constipated and sluggish if i eat too many. however, they are good if i really need something to make feel satiated right away.

I go thru phases ... for lack of a better term. I'm not one to snack on nuts on a regular basis. Occassionally I'll snak on them (which means like maybe 3 or 4 almonds or 5 cashews... and then that's enough!).

Mostly if I eat nuts its cuz it's in a recipe like a few in my pesto sauce, or spicy taco mix - which is amazing and lasts me 3 or 4 days and several meals a day at that -- I'll eat it until it's gone- then I don't eat it for another month or so...

the other biggey is the eggless egg salad - that will last me about 3 days - so depending on my menu... I may or may not eat nuts for a couple of weeks at a time - then eat them solid for 3 or 4 days...

this is inspiring thread because I feel way too dependent on nuts!!!

I am using them as my only source of fat right now so they are basically giving me most of my calories too

but with the almond thing, the cashew thing and the density thing....i need to step away

I never have been überly fond of nuts (nor seeds actually), finding them too dense, too heavy and not very energy giving in general, with the exception of (roasted) peanuts, cashews and pistachios, which I loved to eat every once in a while in the cooked old days.
Nowadays, when I have a peanut craving for example and give in, I just feel só immensely tired, it just drags me down, and I don't want that anymore. And that's how I feel about nuts in general: like they're rocks. The thought of having to eat a nutloaf just makes me crinch. I'd rather eat real bread than a 'nutrock' to be honest. I feel that nuts aren't that ideal for human consumption, or not for me personally anyway.
As far as the 'raw' nuts go, when I first started eating raw a year ago, I did use a lot of almonds (for milks and pies), because it was a welcome addition to my diet and I found them to be lighter than the rest of the nuts, but the rest, I could easily do without. But even the almonds got less and less frequent and nowadays... I don't know. I just don't feel like them anymore and it wouldn't surprise me if I'd never eat them again.
Also, I couldn't handle the (bad) food combining of nuts and fruit very well, for example: I found banana almond shakes really delicious, but it didn't sit that well with me. So.

I don't eat nuts anymore, except if I go out to a raw restaurant and the nuts are part of an entree or pie crust or whatever. Other than that, never. I didn't eat them for years before I went raw. Then when I first went raw I was following the recipe plan, but I gained weight and felt lethargic from all the nuts. About a month ago I cut them out again and feel fine. I dunno, I guess I've never really liked them all that much anyway. Like I'd never just go and eat a plain handful of nuts or trail mix or anything. When I was little I used to like peanut shells--not the peanuts, just the shells...weird huh? :p Guess I'm just not a nut person.

Nuts are just a waste of calories for me. I am fat enough as it is.....nuts would just about put me over the edge. Good thing I don't like them much.

I eat mainly:
coconuts
sunflower & chia seeds
avocados

That's plenty of fat for my big butt.

I can't do nut milks, they don't digest well with me for some reason. But I eat nut sporadically throughout the day....I have at least one brazil nut a day, then maybe 5 cashews later, then 2 more brazils....but I've been eating baby carrots instead lately.

I only Nut I like is Almonds, eat them alone or in a recipe (and only seed I like is Pumpkin). I skip a recipe if it has anything other than Almonds in it or I cannot replace w/ almonds. I will have try Mock Salmon w/ the Carrots, I never made it because of the Nuts. :D

I never really ate nuts prior to raw except peanut butter, but I don't think Jiff peanutbutter counts ;) Now I'm anaphalaxic with peanuts. Anyway, I never had walnuts or cashews before raw. Heck, before I started working at my health food store I never had them. I WAY over eat them and only eat them with sea salt...double trouble for me. They make me crave more salt and stuff, I fall into a como-type sleep once I get home, my digestion is so...messed up, and ah...it's not good.

I also wonder...how natural is it for us to eat nuts anyway? If you found a nut tree could you truely open the shell up with your hands? Nuts don't naturally come in bags or bulk bins unshelled ;) I'm not trying to be "noo, nuts are evil!" but just throwing that out there. I just wonder what others think about that theory of mine. I may be way off though haha.

Dream, that's a great point! I've wondered about that too. I mean, I'm not totally obsessive about only eating things we're "supposed" to eat, but sometimes I do wonder if things like that are good for us--especially in such large amounts as a lot of raw foodists eat nuts.

Just because we couldn't open it with our bare hands and only our hands, doesn't mean it wouldn't be natural for us to eat it. I've seen nature shows where racoons or sea otters were 'fishing' for some type of seafood, I think they were clams. Anyway, whatever they were eating had shells. The animals retrieved the shell from the water, then slammed it against flat rocks to get to what was inside. Having the capability to problem solve and adapt is what keeps animals (and people) from starving. We don't have to problem solve like they do because, as you mentioned, our food often comes ready to eat. :)

i dont feel like nuts are especially good for me, but sometimes i just feel like im gonna float away (meaning i feel really light, energetic, and wonderful), and i am just not used to it and i kinda freak out and eat a bunch of nuts. but i always feel pretty bad so who knows. im just letting myself eat them right now as im not a seasoned rawbie yet.
