So, I just started raw as of today. But last night after I came home from the whole foods store, I decided to try a green smoothie. All I bought was a few things to make smoothies and salads. I didn't want to dive right in.

I tried to make something I found somewhere online...

1/2 to 3/4 cup of water
1/2 tomato
5 romaine lettuce leaves
1 cup spinach
1 cup kale
half an avacado
1 tsps of garlic. (now this is what the recipe is, someone tell me what a tsps is? I want to say table spoon but also want to say it was a misstype...)
cayenne powder 1/4 tsp.

I didn't have the tomato and I didn't have cayenne powder. I did put 1 tablespoon of garlic.
blended it all in a blender. it made A LOT! i took a sip and spit it all out.

I'm sure if I had the tomato in there it would have been slightly better? maybe? I'm thinking no.....

This morning, however I did make a smoothie with one apple, 3 strawberries, 1 1/2 leaf (1 cup) of romaine lettuce, and a teeny bit of honey. For the first few gulps it was gross. The initial taste i tasted apple, which is great, then after I swallow, the after taste was mushy lettuce.....

by the end of it I could stomach it a lot better. Maybe an orange next time. and maybe some ice to make it colder. room temp lettuce is bad lettuce...

That was my first experience with smoothies..... :D

yea i like my smoothies sweet too, including the green ones so i make sure i add enough sweet fruit like mango, banana, etc. definitely chill them, cold smoothies taste so much better than room temp ones, :)

Try adding more water and more fruit.....maybe a banana. tsp is probably teaspoon.

Here was my simple first one -and almost everyone who has tried it loves it!

frozen mango chunks
frozen banana chunks
couple handfuls of baby spinach
cup or two of water (or nut milk)
dollop of vanilla paste (optional)

Just whirl until smooth.

I've found spinach to be a great green for your first green smoothies - it's flavor is almost entirely unnoticable and it doesn't do screwy things to the texture.

I also like the mango/banana combo because... well, I like mangos and bananas. But they also let your smoothie come out a pretty green color, whereas berries tend to make your smoothie look like mud (not always, but often!) For me, because I like bananas, frozen banana is a staple - makes it nice and creamy!

Btw, regarding the apple.... some people love it, some don't. I personally think it gives smoothies a grainy texture. Fresh apple JUICE on the other hand.... <shrugs>

If you do a quick search, you'll find threads with LOTS more green smoothie recipes. Just keep trying and playing until you find one that is personally delicious. Good luck! :)
