Hi everyone
Its been awhile since Ive been here. Ive been dealing with some serious health issues that I wont bore you with but that is why ive been absent.
I was hoping you all might help me with a question or 2. The benefits of raw vs vegetarianism and how it would affect someone with hypothyroid. I obviously fell off the raw wagon and want to get back to a better and healthier way of living. I have been urged to be more of a vegetarian but I am concerned about all the soy products and being a veggie. Does anyone have any new info to share on soy and hypothyroid or raw and hypothyroid?
I am also curious to know if anyone has celiac disease. If so, how does living raw help you with that.
I sincerely appreciate any information!!
Thanks :)

Also, being vegetarian or vegan doesn't mean you *have* to eat soy.

I had been vegan for 10 years before going raw. Was hypothyroid during that whole time.
I have been raw vegan for 2 years now and am still hypothyroid. In fact, I have had to up my dosage twice. So what heals one person doesn't always do it for everyone.
Now, Lucy, here has had her thyroid healed. Hopefully mine will get better someday too.
I am also a celiac. The great thing about raw is it cuts out a lot of the gluten filled foods. I have been on a gluten free diet for 10 years also.
You still cannot eat raw gluten filled grains. I know some people say that you can but they still cause damage in true celiacs but the great thing is that there are so many things you can eat in raw foods that you will never miss the few things that do have wheat/gluten.

First, you don't have to eat soy as a vegetarian/vegan. Now, if you eat cooked, prepared/processed vegetarian foods you will have a hard time avoiding soy but barring the processed stuff (which isn't much better than the stuff it's trying to replace), you'll be fine.
As for the celiac: I'm not a celiac, but I am gluten intolerant. I remember having to read all the food labels to try to ferret out the hidden gluten (processed foods are full of it even where you least suspect it). Being a raw vegan has totally freed me of that! As was mentioned, people will tell you that you can eat gluten-containing grains that are sprouted but since you are a celiac, I wouldn't risk it. There are other grains you can sprout instead so there's no reason to eat something potentially harmful to you -- this is about healing! :)

Whole raw is great! Smoothies just add some variety and mixing. Some also say that a blending helps to make the food more digestable.
Whole veggies and fruits are good. They do not need to be in a smoothie. Just raw, fresh, organic (if possible, I can't always find/afford organic), ripe.

Thank you for ALL your responses everyone! They are very helpful!
Faith4u - I am most interested in yours b/c I suspect I have celiac or am at least gluten intolerant or sensitive. I guess for me I am wondering how "easy" it will be to convertmy way of eating. I tried RAW before and the hardest part about it was eating out and enjoying life with my family. It was difficult to find places we all could enjoy and it just got very difficult. I thought being more vegetarian or even vegan might help that. (being able to eat cooked food sometimes - usually only when eating out). I am not a a bread or pasta eater now so adding that is not something Id do. I just worry that soy is not good for the thyroid. I get mixed responses on that.
Anyway - thanks so much for all your input!!! I greatly appreciate it! :)
