Yesterday was my birthday, but I couldn't get off work, so today I got off work and my husband and I went out to eat to celebrate. We went to Quintessence on Amsterdam between 87th and 88th Streets on the Upper West Side. It was pretty good, although pricey (which I was expecting after looking at their menu online beforehand).

We got a variety platter for the appetizer, and the various things were pretty good, although some things were a little over-spiced. I like spicey, but I don't like overkill, and some things seemed to be overkill. I liked the cracker and the nori roll thing the best.

Then for a main entree I had raw ravioli which was really good - creamy! The side salad was also good, although I admit that I have had better raw salads. I enjoyed the raw kale very much, though - it was in the salad. My husband had the burrito meal, and he really enjoyed it. He loves his mexican food, so it is important to find good raw mexican dishes.

For drinks I had coconut water, which was good, but my husband's drink of apple juice I thought more tasty.

Then for dessert we split a piece of their mudslide pie. It was good, but my husband thought that the desserts from Pure Food and Wine (just off of Union Square about a block or two) were better.

Overall I enjoyed the experience a lot - the people were very friendly. I could tell that they really want people to understand what they're eating. I overheard one of the waiters trying to explain to a lady that nothing was very warm...I think she had a hard time understanding that raw really means raw!!

I am so glad that we finally tried this place out. Here is their website just in case you want to see pictures of their dishes, etc.: www.raw-q.com (http://www.raw-q.com)
