Hey Everyone,

I'm just got my book in and I have started reading the book, and it is so awesome. I'm looking forward to changing my lifestyle for myself and for my family. But I do have a questions How can you tell which fruits are the best/sweetest? I have that problem when I go to purchase fruits I don't know if a peach is supposed to be hard or soft, or how to tell which watermelon is the sweetest. I need help!!!!!! Any suggestions on how to pick out the best fruits.

Thanks
Nicole

*peaches should be a little soft, not mushy & not hard.
*Pineapple should have some yellowish on it, when you get it home, cut off the green stem and turn it upside down for a couple of days and it will ripen and get really sweet. Then store it upside down in the refrigerator if you don't eat it all at once.
*cantelope - I usually take mine home and let them sit out for about 2 days, then put in the refrigerator for 1 day, then eat.
*watermelon - same as cantelope.

Also, I found a type of grapefruit that's sweet, Star Ruby Grapefruit. It's kind of reddish in color.

Thanks for the info Kay. I always have problems trying to figure out when things are good to eat. Lately the cantelopes I buy haven't been sweet.

follow your nose! for most fruits and vegetables, if they don't smell good, they won't taste good.

i ALWAYS smell the following before buying:

tomatos
celery
carrots
canteloupe (smell the stem end)
peaches
nectarines
plums
apricots
strawberries
sweet peppers
pineapple

i'm sure there are more, but these i absolutely go with my nose.

don't really care that people look at me like i'm whacked. you'd be surprised how many people you see around you that start doing the same thing! :D

One tried and true trick I know is for picking out pineapples. If you want a ripe one, pull at the center most blades in the top. If it comes out easily, then it's ripe. I have used this technique for years and it never lets me down. No only if I could figure out the watermelon! As far as I can tell, the heavier it is, the more jucier it is.

Hope that helps, at least a little.;)

Watermelons: pat them with your hand and you should feel a very distinct vibration as if it is a water balloon filled with water. Pat a few and you will feel a difference. I can always always pick out a melon. (my mom calls me on the phone and pats them so I can hear them and tell her which one to get LOL)

cantaloupe: should have a distinct cantaloupe smell, not musty

honeydew: should be more yellow on the outside and smell almost like perfume. Distinct and intoxicating smell

Peaches: get the ones with the most red on the skin. should be slightly soft to the touch. If not, can take them home and ripen them in a paper bag

avocados: should be firm but have some give when squeezed. Can also be ripened on the counter or paper bag

apples: look at the bottoms. make sure they are closed and have no mold on them. look for firm skin (no wrinkles) and no bruises

cherimoya: should feel slightly soft when squeezed. can also be ripened on the counter or paper bag...may turn a brown color but that's ok. sweet as candy!

pears: pretty much the same as apples

bananas: at perect ripeness when has brown spots

grapes: look for a translucent color to them.

Smell is usually a good indicator of fruits.

oh thanks for bringing this up! and thanks to everyone for their suggestions. i always spend so much time in the produce section because i'm super picky about my fruits and veggies. am i the only one who sometimes feels like they've examined every piece of [insert fruit here] only to find that none of them are to your liking? sometimes i'll actually walk away feeling defeated, like, i guess i'm not meant to buy any avocados today... :(

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I have been on a search for some good cantaloupe. They all smell musty. Yuck! Have had good luck with watermelon and honeydew though. I just got back from the store and was disappointed in the produce selection. Won't be going back there!!!
