So I had my first durian today. If you want to try a durian but cannot find one, just puree a banana and add onion and garlic, then throw a stink bomb on the ground so you get the smell. At first I thought it was delicious, but I got sick of it quick. The taste lingers too. Overall, I am not sure I would buy another one :o

Um...sounds delightful. LOL Can't say I am interested in trying one now either! Onion and banana...REALLY? Blech.

LOLOL. That was a pretty vivid description! That's wild because someone posted awhile ago that it was like eating white chocolate. But I think he lived in another country. Perhaps that's what it tastes like fresh and in the wild? Dunno but I don't think I'll be trying it anytime soon either!

LOL...good description!
When I tasted durian for the first time, I found the flavor really perplexing and couldn’t quite get passed the sweet-funky-garlicy-oniony taste. It wasn't until after I bought my second durian that I was able to decide I liked it. Now I get excited just from the smell. :D

AHAHAHA! That's the perfect description! Yeah, durian kinda creeped me out too the first time I tried it a few weeks ago. I'd heard all the hype about it and was desperate to try one, then got SO excited when I saw it in a store... then tried it and wondered if I'd just spent $5 on something that had expired last month :p I'll be sticking to good old apples and oranges now, thank you :D

I was watching a show on the travel channel awhile back about the guy that goes around the world eating strange things. He tried a durian and he said that it tasted like a mushy, spoiled onion. He spit it out and couldn't eat it. He said that he had eaten about every strange food on earth and this was the only one that he couldn't stomach. The locals love it even though they said that the smell of it is enough to kill a horse!

Wow - I've never had Durian but I'm very curious about it. Some people claim it's fabulous and then there's the decriptions I'm reading here. I live in Los Angeles and I'm going to go to China Town and see if I can find them there. hmmmm

I think maybe I ate too much of it at once, too. I could not bare it to go to waste, so I tasted it this morning and I liked it! Maybe I can only tolerate a few spoonfuls at a time. Also, there is a soup/ smoothie recipe with thai coconut and cacao that I am going to try later. This will probably be the last durian of my life now that my husband has smelled it so I will use it! He has a sensitive nose:p

...yep, Andrew Zimmerman. He tried it again recently when back in the states and said the same thing :) I'm still like "wow" cause of the all reeeally interesting stuff he does eat on his world travels. But then...Anthony Bourdain had an opposite reaction. Neat how each person is different.

"hey dad! wanna go to the asian market?"
"only if you don't want to get one of the spiney fruit things!!" hehe

I think I know which soup you're talking about! I want to try that one too...but may not add the vit "c".
If you don't want to eat the entire durian right away, you can always freeze the sections, take out the seeds first maybe...
Glad to hear you gave it another go ;)

In LA I found them at Erewhon Market and at Euphoria's Rawvolution Cafe. They sold chunks of them in the refrigerated section. But an Asian market would probably be cheaper. Rawvolution also had durian cheesecake and chocolate durian pie!

Hey Jenna, mind if I ask what market you found them at? I live near San Jose too but I haven't seen them around here yet. The one I tried was already cut up and refrigerated, so I'd like to try a fresh one and see if there's a difference... It'll probably freak my parents out too, LOL! :D

Yeah, that's him. Actually it Zimmern. Weird huh? I love that show and Anthony Bourdain too. They eat some really weird stuff. Makes you want to stay raw. How unhealthy they must be.

I find them frozen at Ranch 99 on Homestead and Wolfe road over in Saratoga.
Haha, you should've seen my mom when I opened the fruit and the beautiful aroma filled the air, hahaha she was like:
Then I asked her if she wanted to try it :D hehehehe

Cool, thanks! That's like right down the street from me!
Hmm, as much fun as it would be to freak out everyone in the house...I'm reconsidering, given what I just wrote in another thread about only buying local produce, and just realized durian probably comes from another country. Well, that plus I'm having flashbacks of the taste/smell... :p
