Not sure if this is the right place to post this... but I need some help with these mean ol coconuts.

HOW ON EARTH DO WE OPEN THESE WITHOUT LOSING A FINGER? I have 2 young coconuts and would LIKE to start a coconut water fast but can't bc I cannot get these stinkers to open! I have watched the videos on youtube, I've researched it. Heck, I took an axe to one tonight and now I am feeling a little insane. Still...no dice. What am I doing wrong? Do I need dynamite to blow the lid off or what?!

I find it REALLY easy, but I won't assume that your coconuts are the same or anything.
Here is what I do:

with the HEEL of a long/biggish knife, I hit it around the top - between the point and where it angles down straight - all the way around, kind of hard ish untill I puncture it.

Then i insert the tip of the knife and slice/pry around.

I hope you get the hang of it - you will :)

I used to open the coconut like SmilingRawDancer does but now I take it out to my garage and put it in a large empty carrot bag (to catch any flying stuff) and then I put it in the vise to hold. Then I get out my electric drill and drill a 1/2 hole in the top. Then I drain the liguid out into a glass. Next I put a 2 inch hole saw into the drill and drill a two inch hole in the top using the original hole as a pilot hole. Ifs fast, safe, easy and very little clean up. This method works for me but not be not be right for you.

I use a meat cleaver and wack the crap out of it until I get a hole big enough to drain out the juice. Then I just finish the job by going around the whole thing. I do this right where the angle part starts, laying it on it's side. As I do it more I'm getting more proficient and I almost never lose any liquid now. It gets easier w/ practice.

Great, thanks everyone! I just need the water, so maybe the drill will work... just put a hole in it to drain the juice. My bf likes the meat... he can take care of the hard part. Last time he used a hammer, but ugh what a mess!

hehe. . . I remember someone posting here about putting it in plastic shopping bags and smashing repeatedly on sidewalk in front of her apartment! I hammer nails to drain fluid. Then use dh strong arm to saw open but could do anger management on pavement at this point.

I used a hammer and a screwdriver. First I made 2 holes and drained the water (without losing a drop!) and then just whacked it with a hammer until I got a hole big enough to scoop out the insides. All this makes me wonder if coconuts were really meant to be eaten :p
