So, does anyone have this experience? An email goes around the office that there's leftover food from a luncheon or buffett or whatever, and to help yourselves....and good GAWD, you would swear everyone here (though the majority are overweight) haven't eaten in months....the vultures hone in and everyone is grabbing cookies and cakes and cheese and bread....stuffing as much on their plate as possible and then coming back for more.
That really makes me proud of my willpower on raw...

Yes... oh my yes... lol!!! But the funny thing - now that I'm enjoying the raw lifestyle... and I'M THE ONE THAT PLANS THE FOOD for such occassions... heheheee!!! I always make sure that there is a beautiful fruit platter, loads of gorgeous veggies and healthy snacks!! :D I'm not totally heartless.. I do allow a few cookies and things like that in... but brownies, or pies - I feed them raw alternatives (and they are so busy stuffing things in their mouths - they don't even realize they're not baked!! :p !!)

The Staff calls me the raw food police cuz I go around checking everyones plates...(OH YES I DO  !!) and everyone BETTER HAVE at least one vegetable on their plate!! Other wise I stand there staring at them until they sheepishly :o get up and get a carrot or something and start munching... then I smile sweetly and walk away!! I just know they're rolling their eyes behind my back!!! and I LOOOVE IT!!! HAHAHHAAAAA!!!

oh and Shanti - I answered your questions on my post with my photos on it.

My b-day was a couple weeks ago. They all know I'm vegan (they don't know anything about raw). Would you believe they got a baskin robbins ice cream cake for themselves to eat and me a pint of sorbet? I was happy they went out of their way to get me the sorbet, but isn't it kind of bizarre they went out of the way to get themselves a cake I couldn't even eat for my own b-day???

 ... NOW THAT'S FRICKIN HILARIOUS!!! Did it say 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY CINDY' on it and everything??? now see... in that same situation If I didn't know anything about raw - (as a joke) I would get a head of lettuce or carrot... something (that could be added to a salad) decorate it with ribbons and sing happy birthday!! ;) (then I'd fix you a beautiful salad!)

I always have this happen!

Actually on my last internship one of the interns decided we should buy some cake for the office as a "going away gift." Of course the guy who organized it thought that I should pitch in to buy the cakes, even though he knows I'm raw vegan and I don't believe we should be eating cake. Well here's the funny thing: I bought a fruit platter and brought it out.

Then he sent out an email saying: free cake at the front. Not many people came out, but slowly people came around. Everyone said: "Oh! There's fruit! I can have fruit!!" And they all grabbed some of the fruit. Only a few people had cake. As it turns out, if he had said in the e-mail: free cake and free fruit, more people would have come.

In the end, I think it was just selfish and he wanted to buy himself a fancy cake and have all of us pitch in. (That's just how this particular guy is... he ate ALL the leftovers... yuck!)

So don't give up on your office mates, they will come around to the fruit and veggie idea. ;)

Cindy - hahaha, when I read that I thought "addiction" but set to the tune when they sing "The Simpsons" at the beginning of the show.

LOL to this simpsons!! It's true though. One crotchity man had a mild heart attack last year and can't eat all the cholesterol laden cake around the office. Whenever he complains I offer him some of my vegan yummies...he never takes me up on it though. He used to tease me and say my food was wayyyy too healthy for him. Not anymore! I sort of put him in his place (nicely) when he returned from his recovery about making fun of me being healthy. Now I see him at the salad bar stocking up on fruit.

I dont see that a lot around these parts (the obese people) but the guys I worked with would order the worst of the worst food ever. Not just pizza, but FAST FOOD pizza! Not just Chinese food, but the worst crap ever; and they ate and ate like it was the best thing on Earth. Then they would throw the remains in my trash can. I would always have to leave because it was too gross for me to watch/smell.

People here are like that and it makes me sick. We are in charge of feeding the rescue/recover teams at the bridge collapse site and we are getting a lot of meals donated by local restraunts and some of the people and vol. in the office always look to see what kind of food has been delivered and they always take HUGE helpings of stuff they dont care what it is. One restraunt brought in meals and then also had bags of cut up veggies and one co-worker said to me " look, they brought in new age tree hugging hippie food just for you" and that made me just a bit angry. I am a "freak" because I eat healthy, go figure

Shanti, I'M PROUD OF YOU for staying true to your convictions. I'm sure you'll feel much better throughout the day and live a longer/healthier life because of making better food choices than your co-workers.

Sounds like a universal problem. My observation has been that people want to be healthy, but they also want the immediate gratification of eating foods that 'taste good'- cakes, cookies, fried foods, etc. They don't realize there's artificial ingredients that cause us to crave these things and, if they'd eat ONLY healthy foods, the junk would taste differently/would have far less appeal.

I always defer eating the junk food, telling people that it makes me tired/lethargic (which it really does). I think this at least gets them thinking more about the effects of their food choices. I also always make sure to bring a platter of fruit for special occasions. At this point, my co-workers know they can count on me to do so. This way, I am guaranteed to feel I am part of the celebration, and people who want to eat none/less of the junk food will have a healthy option.

Try to be patient with your co-workers. Rest assured you probably have more of a positive influence on them than you realize!

Vegan Princess- I think it's hilarious that your co-workers used your birthday as an excuse to indulge in cake. For their birthday, maybe you could bring in a big raw foods torte, and a tiny traditional cake for them? :D

RawkAngel- Your co-workers are trying to find humor in difficult times. Smile sweetly at them, and keep on keepin' on. I suspect when they see how much more energy you have eating 'hippie food', they'll start to realize you're on to something good!

I like that title

:) NEW AGE TREE HUGGING HIPPIE FOOD:)

Make that a label and throw it on a ziploc full of raw snacks and sell it.

You got two days to be all over this name, before I consider getting it trade marked. SERIOUSLY!!!!;) :D

People at my work are the same way. I order lunches for management meetings and set up the leftovers in the kitchen.

People come from no where and start swarming around me. Sometimes it's so bad I have to tell them to get out of the kitchen so I can set the dishes on the counter. And then there are people who keep containers in their desks so they can stock up for leftovers.

Then there are the folks who hover outside of the meeting until it's finished so they can pounce on the food before I get there to move the food.

It's disturbing. And yet they want to make fun of my eating raw. Where's a mirror when you need one? :D

Wow, they keep containers at their desks for leftovers??? You'd think they didn't have access to all the crappy food they want 24 hours a day. I guess there is something about free food that takes away some of the responsibility since you didn't actually buy it for yourself and others are indulging as well.

As for the vegan thing here at work, pretty much everyone knows about it now and no one freaks out about it anymore. And the assistants are nice enough to always order me a salad or something whenever they order pizza for everyone else. I appreciate that.

Hi there. I posted a similar response to another post today - what's more freaky, cutting up fruit and eating it or cutting up an innocent, wide-eyed animal and eating it? People don't really stop to think; too brainwashed. :o

I think the whole thing is about free food, too. For instance - our church owns a retreat center and we as a church, often make use of the center ourselves. We have a big performance coming up soon and the church is providing free meals for entire weekends as we stay there to practice. It's hard on my mentality to think about giving up "delicious" cooked meals that are free. Their food is as from scratch as possible for large crowds and it really shows - so it's almost painful for me to check the "not eating" box when I'm registering for the weekend. I'm always SO GLAD I didn't eat the lasagna, chicken casserole, home-made pizza, or whatever it is - because I know exactly how I feel after eating that stuff. But it's the thought......free is considered good and coveted in our society no matter what it is.
