This morning I decided to have a cherry/banana/spinach smoothie. I have spent the morning in the loo with very dark stools. I have eaten spinach many times and I know it's high in iron. Could this effect be because the spinach is blended up and therefore more accessible in intestinal tract?
thanks

You got it. Your body is doing what it's supposed to be doing. That's a good thing!

From what I understand (and my personal experience) that is completely normal (boy was I in for a surprise when I changed my son's first post-green smoothie diaper). The coloration goes away after a few days.

I was taking iron supplements after I had my first child and my poop and hers (due to breast-feeding), was very dark. I used a supplement - you are doing it the natural way with the spinach!!:o That's a good thing!

Uuummm, not to be a kill joy here, but I was under the impression that iron from spinach was not absorbable, of course that would be why the stool was dark...iron coming out.

I haven't had spinach in about 8 months (doctors orders) but I noticed that I have the same thing happen when I eat cherries in any larger-than-"normal" amount...
Sometimes I even have green stools even when I haven't eaten greens in months.
Isn't nature wonderful? LOL.

I believe that's true. However, I think the smoothie would need to have some citrus (acidic) in it to help the iron absorb better.
