I just learned that the Almond Board is requesting that the USDA postpones the Sept 1 date for the pasteurization requirement. I have a call in to the Almond Board to get the details. Their first reponse was that they are waiting for the decision to be registered by the FDA. I asked for more details and am expecting a call back. If this is approved, it will delay the mandatory pasteurization until March 1, 2008.

I will report back as I find out more.

The reason it was postponed was because too many farmers had problems getting the mandatory equipment in time (I think cost related) so they decided to postpone it.

Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with all the protesting and letters but still good news because it gives us time to get some action together.

be on the lookout for "action" coming up. :)

(FYI: there are still almonds out there that are pasteurized - some places were doing it since April - so still be careful what you buy)

I just received the return call from the Almond Board. They expect to hear back in the next few days from the USDA on their decision whether to postpone or not. Stay tuned!

As you may have heard already, the pasteurization is on for Sept 1. The postponement was denied by the USDA.:(

Is there any sort of policy like this in the UK? Not for almonds necessarily, but what's there to be aware of that someone new to raw may not have considered?
