Has anyone read this book? I read and re-read Alissa's book (which I love), Living Cuisine (also love)and I have some other raw books that I can't get through. I need something similiar to Alissa's book and thought maybe Shazzie's would be good.

I love Shazzie's book! A delightful read since she has so much personality
and enthusiasim that comes thru. She's one of my faves and I read her book
like in 2 days last year. Alissa's is one of my faves too of course. I bought
my MIL a copy of Alissa's for her birthday and have lent my copy
to a friend to browse thru, although i need it back. I use Alissa's the most.
I am reading "Living Cuisine" right now and "Rainbow Green, Live-Food Cuisine".

Shazzies book Detox Your World is not like Alissa's book. It is very good, and very different. It is more about Detoxing your life on all levels and gives you suggestions on how to do that, also offering a few different detox plans. It has a small recipe section and some transformation stories. It's a great read for detoxing all areas of your life.
While the focus of ALissa's book is why eat raw, how to eat raw, how to stay raw, the focus of Shazzies is Why detox, What can you detox, How to detox, at least from my perspective.
As is anything written by Shazzie, it was an enjoyable read.

Do either of Shazzie's books have photos?
I'm a big freak for (un)cookbooks that have color pictures.

Good point Sweet G.
I totally agree.
Shazzie's book is different than Alissa's. I use Alissa's daily
for recipes, etc.
I don't remember too many color photos in Shazzie's book.
She has some cool hand line drawings in her "Detox Delights" booklet
and a few black & white photos of people in "Detox your World".
If you enjoy reading thru her website than you'll probably enjoy
her book, but without the color pics.
hope that helps.

What about "The Raw Gourmet" by Nomi Shannon? Please know that I already have Alissa"s wonderful book and use it practically everyday. It would, however, still be great to have one or two additional books for recipe variety and other pertinent information about raw/living foods as well. I don't, mind you, want recipes that require elaborative preparation (i.e. "Raw: The Uncook Book" by Juliano). Living Cuisine by Renee Underkoffler is a possibility since it is getting rave reviews from raw foodists in cyberspace. Many of Renee's recipes are supposedly simple enough that any raw fare can be prepared with either typical or easy-to-find ingredients just like Alissa's recipes. Please note that I am not really into dehydrating at this moment and someone mentioned that a good chunk of Renee's recipes require the use of a dehydrator. On account of this, I am really sitting on the fence about this particular book. In any rate, Alissa mentioned Nomi in her book and that makes me curious about "The Raw Gourmet". Does anyone have anything to say about Nomi's book?

I have (don't laugh) Living Cuisine, Raw Gourmet, Living in the Raw, Raw, Complete book of Raw food, Hooked on Raw, All of Gabriel Cousens books, 12 steps to Raw Food, and Allisa's book.
I also read Carol Alt's which was just pathetic. Anyone who eats meat should not be considered RAW.
My absolute fav's are (in order): Allissa's, The Complete Book of Raw food, and Living Cuisine. The Complete book of Raw food is 90% recipes from like 40 different raw chefs. The Raw Gourmet is like Juliano's, not as complicated recipes but lot's of pictures. It is in most bookstores.

I was curious about her book, haven't read it yet....
does she eat any cooked foods? I thought if one's diet consisted of 75%
raw they were considered RAW if one is 'into' labels.
She may not be RAW VEGAN but she still may be considered RAW....
Almost all of my diet is raw vegan, but on rare occassion i will eat
sushi. I also LOVE RAW HONEY. I still consider myself RAW, although I have never declared myself vegan. It's a process for me & I feel no shame
about it.......
No flaming please!

Punky,
Hey now - I have the Carol Alt book - I liked her enthusiam (need spell check), and her recipes. Although I am not a raw meat eater (ewwie), she apparently enjoys it and that is alright with me.
Since I collect cookbooks and I am trying to find all the raw ones - I even have a vintage one (I will look at the title when I go to the bookcase under my bed- long story) that cost about 1.50 back in the day, I thought Carol's book was well worth the 7.80 cents I paid for it from Amazon which was discounted because of my buying text books for school.
For- a- new- to- raw- in- transition- and- want- to- know- what- this- celeb- is- talking- about- and -because- Demi- Moore- who- happens- to- look- real- good- at- 42- and is-happily- pregnant- hasn't- written- one- IT IS GOOD!
I get the impression that flaming is something akin to meaness? or is it something else You young kids have such vocabularies - anyway, I hope I didn't flame

Hey Sweet Lips!
Is this reply meant for me or Janine?
I think my post was confusing...
I was standing up for Carol Alt, saying I thought she was still RAW
even though she may not be vegan.
Janine thought Carol's book was pathetic and she should not be
considered RAW because she ate a little raw meat occassionally.
Just getting the facts clarified.
Yes flaming means attacking or meanness or JUDGEMENTS.
I didn't want to hear any remarks about me eating sushi
occassionally...I am still transitioning.
Am I making more sense? Yes I am tired...it's 11pm here in texas.

Of course you didn't flame me Sweet Lips :p Your too sweet!
And I totally agree with you. Even though I haven't read Carol Alt's book
yet I think she will give rawfoods a lot of publicity.
Now we just need to get Demi Moore to write a book ;)

Oh, I misread your comment, I thought you wanted a review about the book since you hadn't read it - no, I still can't judge you cause you eat sushi - you are doing what is best for you - right? You are complete in yourself -right? You provide support to others -right? You are smiling now aren't you-right. ;) Go to bed, get some sleep and feel wonderful about how right you are for you!
Talk with you later - I am off to bed to read a book about fasting - cool beans all!

Punky. Not intending to ignite you again, here I go: I mererly believe (my own personal opinion) that consuming flesh (in which an animal/fish had to suffer) is not a good thing. I think you should go RAW to detox your life. The bad energy you obtain after eating a defenseless animal is not a good way to Detox. Sorry to spark (or flame) such emotions. I have nothing against Carol Alt as a person, just didn't like her book. Just giving my opinion, take it, leave it, ignore it. I like to hear all opinions on all subjects so I can form my own opinion. Again, my apologizes.

Thanks Sweet Lips and V.Vixen,
thanks for your support ;)
I strive to be raw vegan someday-all the way, but in the meantime
I rejoice in how far i've come and all the other bad habits
I have left behind. I am in no way "promoting" meat on this board, LOL.
I personally think fish is too contaminated with heavy metals and pollution
to really be considered healthy anymore...
My eating sushi is more of an occassional cooked food slip-up.
Someday I hope to be over all my cooked food hangups ;-)
My point is I am still a raw-er like anybody else on this board
striving towards the same goal. It's ALL good!

Hey Janine,
It's all good, and I wasn't mad (maybe tired last night though). I totally understand you view...just
giving another view ;)
I haven't read her book at all; I myself was very surprised that it was being sold and advertised on raw vegan sites after hearing she wasn't vegan. But I totally don't judge her for her food choices and it may open the door to a lot of people to the raw lifestyle that may never venture this way. It is a good transition to a healthier way of life. I guess that was my point, but I ramble a lot LOL

This was very interesting, "The bad energy you obtain after eating a defenseless animal is not a good way to Detox."
The bad energy you obtain when someone calls you pathetic and says you shouldnt be considered raw , or when you insult someone and call them names, is not a great way to detox either.
I dont eat raw meat, however, I had a good friend of mine try it, and when I just had to express my opinion on it, I hurt her feelings terribly. It was a good lesson in not judging, not labelling and not expressing my opinion at the expense of someone's feelings.

Thanks for the laughs folks, especially SweetLip's thingy at the end.
O.k., here goes. I've not gotten Shazzie's book(s) yet, although I've read about her in various places and like her spirit so, eventually, I will since I've gotten so many others.
In order of books I like (just the top three are in ~ the rest? *shrugs*). I would choose Alissa's first ~ (I do a review of hers on my site and why I like it). Then, I like Nomi's Raw Gourmet as this was the first book I'd gotten and did a LOT of recipes from there; then Juliano's ~ second book I've gotten. I've not done a lot of recipes from other books. Oh! I will tell you though, IF you want recipes that are simple ~ some transitional ~ and without the use of a dehydrator, get Storm's eBook from www.thegardendiet.com. I also have Renee's Living Cuisine (two copies), Rainbow Cuisine and Conscious Living by Cousens; Raw Secrets (Patenaude), Living in the Raw (Rhio), and a whole bunch of others.
Oh! a few books which I highly recommend would be anything by Norman Walker. These are the first books on natural living I've ever gotten. They are fairly inexpensive.
I've also gotten Carol Alt's book. It has some good information and also, good recipes, many of which she gives credit for. It's a very simple, easy-to-read book. Yes, she does eat raw beef and fish. I'm not inclined to do so yet, for those who are, this is a good book to have.

Touchee' Punky! Very good point and exactly why I love discussion (boards). You gave me an idea. This may be a way I can get my husband to eat healthier (tempt him with sushi instead of a dead cow, lesser of the 2 evils, then roll in the raw nori rolls) And I too would love to see Demi right an article or co-write a book in Raw. Could she be a better poster child for RAW?

I don't mean to split hairs but Demi Moore is not raw. She does it now and then but she's not 100%. She also has a really good plastic surgeon, has had a lot of work done and continues to...so what you see is not all because of being able to hire Juliano, at something like a grand a day,as a personal raw chef for so many months before filming charlie's angels. Not to mention having a personal trainer that works with you every day. Is she for sure pregnant? Because I hope she stops smoking sometime soon.
Welcome to hollywood, where image is everything and money is no object.

Shakti,
Your not splitting hairs at all. I have no doubts that she has a trainer
personal chef and LOTS of help to maintain herself that typical people do not.
I wonder if she has had any facial work done? I would guess to say, definately
a breast implants long ago. I am really curious how raw is she? That would help put things in perspective too.
I had no idea she smoked?!?!? wow

I have Renee's book Living Cuisine. I've only tried 3 of the recipes in it but they were all great, unlike a lot of other raw cookbooks I have where it's always hit or miss. Guess I have finicky tastebuds. And while she does have some dehydrated recipes, most of her dishes are fresh. I wouldn't call them simple though bc most of them have tons of ingredients. Worth the effort in the kitchen, but not on a daily basis.
I also second storm's ebook thegardendiet.com. It has delicious recipes that are quite simple to make, nothing dehydrated.
I just got another uncookbook called the Joy of Living Live: A Raw Food Journey by a woman named Zakhah. It has Caribbean, black American soul food-type dishes, as well as African and Latin-American recipes too -- all ethnic foods I love and haven't really found represented anywhere else in terms of raw recipes. I haven't tried any of them but this weekend I'm going to get busy in the kitchen, so I'll post a review.
Then of course, there is our wonderful Alissa's cookbook, which is one of the best IMO. I made the walnut raisin cookies for the first time this week and they were the bomb. My non-raw husband and son totally scarfed them down.

Does anyone have Mike Synder's new e-book? I am hoping to buy it soon. I read the index and it sounds great, seems to have the most up-to-date information on how to be successful at the diet. It also has a money-back guarantee. His website is
www.therawdiet.com
I have Shazzie's "Detox Your World" and at first I loved it. But I have since become disillusioned with her. Her book suggests that you can get all your nutrients from food, but in her website she is promoting all kinds of expensive supplements and superfoods with the diet, which seems to contradict what she says in her books.
I loved David Wolfe's "Eating for Beauty" book; it's a beautiful colorful book, and it talks about the beautifying effects of certain foods like coconut, arugula, etc....things that are easy enough to find in the supermarket. But when I checked his website, he eats all these exotic fruits and things I've never heard of.
I read a short interview and was very impressed with Brian Clement of HHI, who has been raw for, I think, 25+ years. He looks like a young handsome man of 35, yet he's in his 50s. I think he doesn't eat any fruit. I wonder if he's written any books?

Noah Wylie -- wouldn't kick him out of bed, either! Tons of people (celebrities, too) drive hybrids out here, BTW.
For you Woody-philes, many of you weren't on this forum when the link to his website was posted, so here 'tis -- Enjoy!! I saw him in a play he wrote at least 10 years ago (he's not young chronologically, huh) in a 99-seat nonequity theater. All his Cheers pals were there (Danny DeVito sat in back of me -- admiring tattoos) and it was a fairly decent play. CatherinetheGreat ran into him in her doctor's office back when she started 100% about 3 months ago, as I recall. One of the perks of living out here -- maybe in exchange for the horrible traffic jams and lack of public transportation? Glad he's into raw and hemp, now, though, using his fame for the greater good.
http://www.voiceyourself.com/03_thoughtsfromwithin/03_movie.php
I really like Rhio's Hooked on Raw though many of her recipes use a Green Power or Champion juicer's blank plate. Her salads and veggies are fabulous, though. The best part is her non-recipe sections -- good, solid information. She started the raw hotline in New York years and years ago and is the real deal.
My most recent acquisition is Warming Up to Living Foods by Elysa Markowitz who had raw TV cooking show. At the same time I bought David Wolfe's Eating for Beauty, but I'm very disillusioned by it - it just seems like one giant advertisement for the products his company sells. So many of his solutions are in the form of supplements which can only be bought from him. Ah well -- it's just one book out of what are beginning to be many, many raw books. Yaaay!!

Hey, I second that! Great guy, but no sparks here ...at all. I remember an interview with him on public radio, though, where he said that he recycles so thoroughly that a week's worth of trash (nonrecycleable) is so small, it'd fit in a glove compartment. And, he proved it to doubters. Cool, huh. That's my goal, too, but, first, I've gotta learn to compost! I just hate throwing out all the fresh discards from my produce.
Punky
04-24-2005, 01:43 PM
Raw Truth, that's so cool about how much he is recycling. I need to learn to compost too.
I hate throwing out stuff from produce that I know I could be composting.
Our city picks up our recycling so that makes it easier. Actually our city has it's own compost soil you can buy.
I hate it when
people come to my home and throw bottles in my trash. I picked threw my garbage a few weeks back after a party for beer bottles. I assumed people would just leave them on my counter for me to recycle or ask me where to put recyclables, but NO.
RawTruth
04-24-2005, 02:01 PM
Yeah, the city issued us a big purple trash barrel for recycling. Amost everything can go in there -- paper, cardboard, plastic, glass. Magazines go to classrooms. For electronic and hazardous waste, there's a center about 1/2 hour away, and just up the street is the unversity recycling center which takes a numbers of plastic that the city won't take. Though I've been recycling my plastic water bottles for cash myself lately. It's not much money, but I got tired of paying the beverage recyling fee and then just throwing them into the bin. I want that money back! Outgrown/unused clothes, household items, and the results of my continuing decluttering efforts go to freecycle.org members. The only thing left is what I want to compost ... I'm just procrastinating about that along with planting with has been on my to do list for weeks now!! Aargh, my to do list is turning into a monster and is going to eat me alive. But, that's another subject. 'Nuff said.
Sharon in Colorado
04-24-2005, 02:06 PM
When we moved here from Long Beach, I kept asking about the recycling. Nobody does it out here, unless they pay extra. The garbage collectors are run by private companies and they are very competitive. Also, the ground is extremely hard and I can't compost out here in the particular area like we did in Long Beach.
Needless to say, we have a lot of garbage!
RawTruth
04-24-2005, 02:26 PM
That seems so odd to me, Sharon. I always think of Colorado being so much more ecologically advanced than we are here in the LBC! But, maybe that's cuz the time I spent there was in Boulder?
Punky
04-24-2005, 02:27 PM
Hey Sharon,
We do pay extra to the city for recycling; it is mandetory and not optional
though. it's on our city utilities bill each month.
We have a lot of clay in the soil around here. Nobody has basements
in these parts. I don't know anything about composting really. i was going
to buy one of those plastic composters that you can spin. I don't know if you've seen them on natural living catalogs, but they look easier than
doing it in your yard.

Diana - Yes, out here in the Springs were not as tree huggin' as the Boulder crowd, where you'll see a lot more 'earth saving' stuff going on. No doubt, we are clean but maybe since the garbage collectors are run privately there are no laws put upon them. Actually, though, there are several recycling centers around here where many people bring their extras. However most of our extras are cardboard from boxes, as we don't use too many cans and bottles.
Punky, I've also thought about one of those rolling composts. The one we used in Long Beach (which were free through the city, Diana, they were giving them away at El Dorado park a few years ago), you dump the scraps on the top and there's a little door at the bottom to get the black gold out. What I wonder about the tumbling/rolling composters is that the black gold (good stuff) gets all mixed up with the new scraps. Usually you have to allow several weeks for the scraps to compost. So some people buy 2 of them, one to 'cook' the scraps into black gold, while the other you use to fill your current scraps with.

The city gives away composters here. Supposedly one has to attend a 1-hour class to receive one. We'll be doing that as soon as we get settled in. *whispers* Bo's doing my closet right now. :)
Diana, maybe you can come up and get a composter! :D

They have composting toilets too. You go right outside on the unit. I'm sure you should be pretty pure to do this!!! :D
