Hi, another newb question  I have a new vita mix but I didnt buy the "dry" container they also sell for making flours/breads and I dont have a coffee grinder, and I am wanting to try the "fried" onion ring recipe here on this forum and it calls for a cup of ground flax seeds.
Can I use my vitamix with the regular container it comes with to grind them in? I have only made smoothies and wet things in it so far so I dont have a clue. I also dont want to hurt my vitamix since it makes my green smoothies everyday! I tried grinding them in my ancient food processor and it just wasnt working. I feel like it might burn it up before it ground them all LOL I imagine I could buy the already ground flax seed but I have a big bag of whole golden flax seeds and I want to try that recipe now! :p
Thanks

hey, blueberries.
i would recommend against it unless you are putting flax seeds in with your smoothies.
i use a cheap coffee grinder to grind my flax seeds as i need them. once they are ground, they go rancid rather quickly.
good luck!

Keep the unground and ground seeds in the fridge!

Any thrift store or eBay even would probably have a reasonable coffee grinder for you...

I grind flax in my Vitamix ALLLL the time! Key is to not add too much, maybe a half cup at a time and of course, make sure they're dry and not soaked.
I own the 4500 model so there is no "dry container"...just the one container and it works lovely!

Rawkinlocs! I just made your rawnch dressing recipe on your site and OMG!!! I had given up the SAD dressings and this is the first time a salad actually made me feel full and wow! does that ever taste good!!!! yum :p Thank you so much for sharing that recipe. I finally found a keeper! I was getting kind of disappointed in the things I've been able to try so far but I'm encouraged to stick to it now. BTW, does that dressing keep for a day or two in the fridge? I hope so as I made too much! well, too much for one salad anyway... dont worry I will eat it! ;)
Now about the vitamix.... I guess I will get a cheap coffee grinder as I would hate to mess up my vitamix. I have the 5000 (bought on ebay from vitamix, used demo model, really good deal) and since there is a seperate dry container, it would make me too nervous to ruin my vitamix already LOL

I do it in my wet container all the time without any problems.
I have the dry container and we use it for smoothies and things when we need more than one container at a time. It works fine for that too.

Wow...I'm glad you liked the dressing! :D Thank you for the feedback.
Now, why do you feel you will ruin your Vitamix? The only thing they say about the "wet" and "dry" containers is that the dry one is better for grinding grains, etc. because of the way the blades are or something. The way I see it, the "wet" container is like the standard one (like the one I have). But I hear ya if you don't want to chance it...but I'd at least give it a try...it won't ruin it...they're just insinuating that you may get better results if you use the dry container as opposed to the wet one. I'd call the company and ask them too.

ok, well then I guess I will go ahead and try it. I just havent had it long enough to know what it will do yet. I am anxious to try out those "fried" onion rings :D

You can use the V-M but I use my personal blender. I understand coffee grinders work as well though.
