this is an e-mail I got from a guy who had thyroid cancer and was ready to go in for surgery and saw a natropathic doc who put him on a raw diet and some supplements and he is now 80% cured without the surgery/ chemo/ radiation. WOW! I'm totally inspired by this!!!

hi catherine,

andrea just briefly told me about your struggles with your thyroid. my
naturopathic doctor guy is ludicrously great. i can't say enough good
stuff about him.

here's my story:

i found out i had cancer about two years ago and i totally freaked out.
all of the images that popped in my head were of my dad (who died
thirteen years ago of prostate cancer which had spread everywhere -
pancreas, liverÂ…) going very quickly from being a big olÂ’ 230 pound guy
to a tiny little 120 pound guy in a wheelchair wearing depends.
horrible.

to make a very long story short, reacting out of said fear, and not
normally being inclined to turn to alternative medicine, beth and i
found and met with this doctor who we were told is THE guy for thyroid
cancer. he is the director of oncological surgery at cedars sinai. we
scheduled surgery for six days later. in those six days, some crazy
stuff happened, (which iÂ’ll gladly tell you if you wanna hear the long
story) and i cancelled my surgery fifteen hours before it was to
happen. i had been reading so much that my eyes hurt, and in this
crazily synchronous way, we met this naturopathic doctor who totally
changed the course of our lives. everything he said had the ring of
truth to it and he totally convinced me that dealing with the cancer
using natural means made a lot more sense than surgery, radiation and
chemo. originally the plan was to do all the stuff he told me to do
for three months, after which i would get another scan done and then
probably get surgery, radiation and all that fun stuff after that scan
showed me that my tumor was bigger, as i thought it almost certainly
would. but i felt like i had to give it a try.

my endocrinologist thought i was crazy, of course. he warned me that
there was absolutely no way my tumor would do anything but get bigger
and that to hope for anything other than that was foolish. the
oncological surgeon guy understandably said i was playing russian
roulette.

in three months my tumor was over twenty-five per-cent smaller.

it is now over eighty per-cent smaller. what is left may just be scar
tissue. the next scan will tell us more.

the endocrinologist guy is baffled. he says that he would have never
believed my story in a million years if he had not seen it all himself.
he insists that i should keep doing everything iÂ’m doing, because it is
irrefutably working.

for a little over tow years, i have only eaten foods that are
organically grown and about ninety eight per cent of the food i eat is
raw. if you read some of the stuff at
http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/rawfood.htm about raw food itÂ’ll
explain some stuff about why, as will
http://www.roxannes-restaurant.com/html/why_body.html. put very simply
— it is widely believed that cancer cells cannot live in an alkaline
environment. our bodies are acidic, largely because of the way we eat,
so we are fertile ground for disease. if you are able to flip your bio
chemistry around so that your tissue is alkaline, the cancer cells
will, in effect, be digested by the immune system. iÂ’m grossly
oversimplifying this, but essentially that is the deal and a raw food
diet is the best way to go about doing that. whatever. the thinking
is — if you are able to clear away the toxins and arm the body with
what it needs to heal itself, it will.

so, other than this salt from http://powerorganics.com and celtic sea
salt, i donÂ’t eat any salt in anything.
here’s the rest of the dietary stuff —
no fried foods
no processed / packaged food
no table salt
no flour products
no soy
no sugar
no additives / preservatives
no caffeine

there is some really cool stuff on all of ‘em. some of the stuff seems
a little wacky, but ultimately, i guess it is no wackier than cutting
organs out of the body and then pumping it full of chemicals and
radiation.

here is some the supplement stuff that i take —

( ** I edited this out because I don't want it to be used by anyone as their own treatment ** )

oh, and i take this herbal “cancer formula” that my naturopath guy
gives me and this other stuff he gives me that helps alkalize the body.

the week i cancelled surgery, i started doing all of this stuff
religiously. i also started going to acupuncture once a week, going to
yoga and in addition to going to a psychologist, i started going to
this art therapist who had me read all of this stuff about how the
immune system fights cancer and then every week had me
sculpt/paint/draw something that was an outward manifestation of what
was happening in my body and then would lead me through a visualization
exercise specific to the thing i had just made and what was happening
in my body. pretty cool stuff.

i realize that all of this may sound like i am just another california
ya-ya, evangelizing about some hippy-dippy fad diet / visualization /
health food / yoga / herbal bullshit, as we are wont to do. but,
whatever. my cancer is totally going away, and i didnÂ’t have to get my
thyroid gland cut out, didnÂ’t have to get chemo or radiation and i feel
better than i have ever felt in my life. i donÂ’t mean to make light of
this cancer stuff, either. i am by no means saying, “oh, just eat some
fruits and veggies and go to acupuncture and youÂ’ll be fine." but i am
saying that i decided to not get my thyroid gland cut out, because
though you can always cut it out, you can't put it back. i just
figured delaying it three months while i tried all this wacky shit was
a risk i was willing to take. i assumed that it wouldn't work and that
in three months, i would have the thyroidectomy, but it made sense to
me to give it a shot for three months because losing my thyroid gland
was scary. i mean it regulates your metabolism—among tons of other
things—and no matter what they say, they will never convince me that a
little man-made pill can completely replace all of the functions of the
thyroid gland.

the story with this naturopath guy is that his mom died of cancer when
he was fifteen. his dad died a year and a half later of heart disease.
he vowed then to do everything he could in his lifetime to see to it
that noone had to go through either side of that agian. so he set out
to learn what cancer is, what it does in the body and how to help the
body fight it. he got a phd in biochemistry, became a naturopath and
has been treating people for something like twenty years. when i met
him, he had stopped taking new patients altogether in an effort to
devote his time to writing a book and developing seminars so that he
could help vast numbers of people instead of spending every waking hour
working with a never ending stream of people one on one. he has helped
tons and tons of people. there are several who were terminal cases and
are now fine, years later. at twenty-three, one woman was diagnosed
with stage four ovarian cancer with far-flung metastasis and was given
two weeks to live by the oncologists at memorial sloan-kettering. he
treated her and she made a full recovery. it has now been eight or nine
years and her first child just turned one.

The natropath has been on a raw diet for 20 years!! Isn't that amazing.
I don't know the entire story on him as I have yet to meet him.
But I wanted to share this letter with you because of the amazing healing effects the raw food had on treating my friend of his thyroid cancer! Incredible and inspiring.

Thank you so much for sharing this story, what am amazing testimony! And all the links too, I am clicking and reading as fast as I can! I wonder what his "menu" is like, low fat or more gourmet recipes (nuts). I ask because I have a friend with throat cancer and I am giving his wife information and they are at least juicing daily now. They have a long way to go toward a raw vegan diet, but every little bit helps!

Thanks again for sharing this fabulous story!

I actually asked him the same thing about what foods he eats

in the beginning he was eating more recipes from raw food books - but at this point
he has a smoothie
that has a bunch of goodies in it - that I haven't found out yet but I know some powder is in it.
and for lunch he has an enormous salad
and dinner a smaller salad
snack would be banana with almond butter

he eats simply now that he has been raw for 2 years now.
But he always brings a cooler filled with raw foods in it so he won't ever get stranded anywhere without good raw foods.
I learned that trick from him and do that myself. I can't tell you how much that one simple step has helped me!

hope your friend finds a way that works!

hope this is helpful too.

Having suffered from both of those cancers - I am glad that my body can remember the parts that it has lost and now my healing is really beginning. I would too like to see his menu.

That's lovely. That whole bit about California Ya-ya... I'm going to share that with my fiance because he says it EXACTLY like that! And I think it'll be good for him to read it. He's been doubting the diet so it'll be refreshing for him.

he sent me this e-mail when I first started talking with him about his experience I was one month raw and freaked out about food prep on raw.

********

as far as food prep time goes -- yeah, it can get a little ludicrous.
luckily, beth is an absolute saint and does all of the hard work.
interestingly, we have found that the longer we do this, the more
simply we eat. initially, we would spend tons and tons of time in the
kitchen making really elaborate meals that in some abstract way
resembled familiar food. know what i mean? there is the temptation --
or even need -- to recreate meals that we have known before and are
comfortable with. we have every raw "cook"book known to man and have
made just about everything in all of them. but when we are working, we
don't have time to deal with spending hours in the kitchen. and after
several months of spending every waking hour dealing with food, the
novelty wears off. so, especially when work is hectic, we buy tons of
prepared food from erewhon (on beverly just east of fairfax on the
south side of the street) all the time. the downside is: it ain't
cheap! but, whatever! it is cheaper than chemo and radiation.

shortly after we started eating 100% raw, a friend gave us the
ludicrously generous gift of home delivery of five course raw meals
every week day. insanely great food arrived at our doorstep in little
coolers every morning before we woke up. they even insisted on picking
up the dirty dishes from the day before. did i mention the food was
staggeringly good. it was really, really expensive, too. so, after
teh month-long gift ran dry, we didn't keep doing it. the name of the
company was seed, and the owner/chef was lesa carlson. she has since
left there, having had some sort of falling out with her business
partner (or so i heard) and i don't think they do the home delivery
thing anymore. there is a new little café called taste of the goddess
(on santa monica blvd. just west of highland on the north side of the
street). they do home delivery that is much more reasonable. $100 for
ten meals. pretty great, huh? we eat at their restaurant all the time
and really like it, but haven't started doing home delivery yet.
http://tasteofthegoddess.com

most days, we have fruit for breakfast. usually an apple or a banana
(or both) with raw almond butter. YUM! if i'm particularly hungry, as
i was this morning, i'll have an avocado and salsa (probably my
favorite thing to eat) and then i'll have a banana and almond butter,
and maybe even a young thai coconut, which is also near the top of my
list of favorite things.

we bring a bag of food with us pretty much everywhere we go. one of
those little soft coolers. it is usually stuffed full of salad fixins,
and snacky things like sprouted and dehydrated nuts and bars and stuff
like that. so for lunch we usually have a huge - and i do mean HUGE
salad. then dinner is usually pretty light. the whole breakfast like
a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper thing is a complete
change for me. i didn't eat breakfast for twenty years before all of
this. i usually didn't eat a whole lot of lunch either. but i would
eat a gigantic dinner, usually really late at night.

Thank you for sharing this. This made me cry. I wish more people could know what we know. I have had a major turn in my health, for the better and love raw eating.

I am truly inspired by this story and am really glad you shared it.

I also really like the idea of bringing my own bag of food with me. I often find myself out and 'stranded'.

catherinethegreat
04-19-2005, 03:52 PM
and I too have been stranded more times then I want to remember. Yuck.
Hopefully more people will do this so they have yummy enzyme rich foods by their sides more often!
After reading his e-mail again - it reminded me why I wanted to eat raw foods in the first place. I'm inspired everytime I read it.

My friend and I went on an excursion on the other side of the city on Sunday. We made sure (based on what I knew about Catherine) that we took a bunch of goodies with us. It REALLY helped me deal with the tempting smells coming from the street vendors.

catherinethegreat
04-19-2005, 04:34 PM
I'm SO glad you did that - I know exactly what you mean about the tempting smells ~ that alone can make me feel deprived if I don't have better choices with me.

Thanks for letting me know it helped!

Thank you Catherine for the additional information, the more I learn the more amazed I am at the testimonies I hear and the move to eating a more simple diet as time goes on seems to be the natural progression too.

And the idea to bring a little cooler with safe foods is a great idea. I have one of those little soft coolers and will start taking it with me. A little bag of nuts and raisins tossed in my purse usually doesn't cut it especially if I am out and about all day long!

This is an AMAZING story! Thanks so much for sharing it. My step-mom has been diagnosed with MS and I already have some info. I got from here (thanks again Helen!) and a few other places and I am going to include this story as well, although it's about cancer and not MS, but it is equally as inspiring and hopefully will allow her to see the benefit of changing her diet to allow her body to heal.

I hope your step mom recovers quickly and can utilize this information toward that healing process!

Hi Catherine,

Thanks so much for posting this!!!!! I had a cold nodule (hot is never cancerous, but cold has a 5% chance of being cancer) but I didn't have cancer. I did have Hashimoto Thyroiditis and a small goiter. I do still have hypothyroidism. So I'm always interested in anything related to the thyroid and have now added Ricks testimony to my list of thyroid links.

I can't wait to read the links he had in his testimony.

Hi Rawkinlocks,

You're welcome for the MS links :)

Catherine,

Thanks for sharing. As I read this I recognized my own father in his description of the doctors father. After being diagnosed with 3rd stage throat cancer he had about 10 months of weight loss, no eating, physical therapy, Chemo, etc.

I would have loved to have known about Raw back then, but I'm afraid he wouldn't have participated. He smoked right up until the end.

I really don't want anyone to have to go through that again, but I doubt we will ever get everyone following the Raw lifestyle.

Please, share any other bits of news with us!

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for sharing that! My friend's nephew has been diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. He's the same age as my youngest daughter-7. Just two days ago he had a scan which revealed that the tumor is back and not operable. They have given him 2 weeks - 2 months. They are very open to alternative medicine. I will pass this information along.

Hi sara,

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's nephew. How awful. Here are some great testimonies and some wonderful videos (free on line) that may be helpful (check out the videos in the 5th one down. There's one in there about a little girl, I think around 10, that wasn't given long to live and 2 years later she's still alive and has improve a lot!):
