View Full Version : So when did you "become" raw?
I'm having some issues with this... I started searching the internet for the answer to my stomach issues in February. I found this site, read a bunch about it, it felt right. I bought Alissa's book and DVDs within a couple days (which I just looked up, it's was February 14th!)... That's when I started making real efforts to eat more raw food, but my mom's bf took his life around the same time. I bolted and went to FL to be with her before I got my book. So, I was on the journey but without direction!
I got back and read the book cover to cover, and on March 7, I started out officially on the journey. I've screwed up plenty (in my eyes), but since then the vast majority of the food I've eaten has been raw.
My most recent Day 1 of not-totally-screwing-up-on-raw journey started was last week. Today is Day 7 of that.
How do you all determine when your "start date" was on the raw diet??? Am I on Day 7 or Day 153 or Day 174 or Day 176 or what??? (Yeah, I can't believe I just counted that out, either! hahaha :p :D  )

I don't consider myself raw unless I'm 100% raw. Unless I'm high-raw, everything else is a standard diet. There's nothing "raw" about it; at least not anymore than the average person's diet is, or should be.
I'm still vegan, as I have been, totally separate from raw. And I say i'm "attempting to get back to raw." Last year I considered myself raw "for most of 5 months". I had very few days where I'd have something non-raw. The rest of the time I was 100%.
I surely don't consider myself raw for a year since that's when I first dabbled in it, because I haven't been anywhere near raw for the past, what, 7 months? If it was a day non raw, or a meal here, I'd consider that raw since <first date here> with a few slip ups. But taking days or weeks or even months off doesn't seem like it'd be considered part of being raw.
So essentially I say I was raw for most of 5 months last year and I'm trying to get back to it.

I think you can say when you started your raw journey as well as counting the most recent time you went raw. It's only 2 numbers to remember and you can cut out all those times in between when you got sick, or "slipped up" or whatever. :)

How do you all determine when your "start date" was on the raw diet?
I count raw from the last time a person eats SAD.
All right EZ rider, so then it would be "raw" for 7 days and "on my way to raw" for all those other days.
I'm really starting to learn lots of lessons. This is such a great journey to be on! Sometimes I forget what it was like to have the stomach aches all the time, and to be depressed and grumpy...
Well I guess I still have grumpy moments, but that's a whole other story!

Hey you! Ms. Avo in the glove compartment! =)
I started taking account 1/5/07. But it was really that day, in late Dec. 06', when my world shifted.

for myself I consider myself raw as long as I have been working to achieve it... and that started officially and spontaneously on June 10th of this year. I had been for a week or two in high school, but for some reason couldn't commit to it and kept trying to go back. and then after battling my eating disorder demons for the UMPTEENTH time this past spring I prayed heavily for Gods guidance out of it because I was so out of control and then one day without premeditation on it the night before I woke up feeling very calm and determined and said to myself.. "That's it. I'm going raw." and have not counted calories, gained weight or lost weight, and have been enjoying some fabulous foods since then :D I truly feel Gods hand on all of this. It's never been this easy for me....

that it is a journey, and I have never been 100% raw for more than 6 days at a time. My journey actually started a few years ago, when I was exploring alternative/holistic type diets. But I had no idea what I was doing, and not anywhere near enough information, and after a couple days gave up. Then last winter I saw a DVD about raw, which really invigorated me, and then in February I found this site.
In the ensuing months I went back to SAD and have experimented a great deal with my diet. In the past several weeks I have been working my way towards high raw, and am about 95% right now.

It's true, this is a "raw journey". It's not black and white. If you fall off, you get back on as fast as you can and keep moving forward. Don't think of it as your raw journey being over and that you have to start over when you slip up.
That's feeding a message of failure to yourself which only makes you feel bad. It's not necessary. Do the best you can do. Some of the leading Raw experts weren't 100% raw from day one. They're human as are you. They kept at it and eventually it became a part of them as it will you.
Relax, and keep learning about the diet and yourself during this amazing journy. You've taken a step away from following the herd of SAD and into the RIGHT direction of RAW. Be proud of yourself. That in itself is a huge accomplishment!

My raw journey began a little over 4 years ago. SOmeone asked me how I heard about raw and I have absolutely NO idea!
Yay Becca! 7 months is fab!
Dream: Wow, that is so funny! That's great, though, that you didn't have to have a crazy even get you here... I remember when I became a vegetarian (which did not last forever) so distinctly... Some animal rights folks on my eighth grade field trip gave me a book that grossed me out. I didn't want to touch the stuff for a while, but alas... I did, then my digestive issues, now raw. :)

I had experimented with raw for a few months, finding things i liked and things that worked for me, then I signed up on this site the end of july and read about the 30 day chal. and decided to go into 100% feet first. So Aug 1st will be considered my start to my new life :)
