My dh is dragging along with my raw experiment... he said the other day he was craving a Western Double Cheeseburger... because he wanted the onion rings. Anyway, I found that onion bread recipe from rawvolution which was to live for! oh my it barely made it out of the dehydrator!

Anyway, he is now craving bagels. He hasn't been too thrilled with any of the raw breads I have made. He eats them but tells me, "This is not bread..." Any ideas?
BTW this is sweet man who thinks if it is soft it must be ok... so whole wheat tortillas are good because they are soft.

Well, Alissa does have a Rye Bagel recipe in her book (and she posted it here in this recipe section some time ago) however, if your husband is looking for that soft, doughy type of texture that he gets with SAD breads and bagels, he may be in for a disappointment with raw, dehydrated breads and bagels.

I mean, I personally LOVE her Rye bagel recipe as a bagel as well as a flat bread or dried longer for a cracker...I also like her burger bun recipe used for flat bread. But it is NOT the same as eating SAD bread. It takes getting used to...acquired taste I guess you could say.

If he can and will eat like those Ezekiel sprouted bread type breads...harder and with more "bite" than regular yeast breads, then he may go for that raw bagel recipe. Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Some raw breads can be soft, though...but usually they are not made with any grains. So, if he liked the onion bread, then I'm sure there are others he may like that don't have any rye or wheat in them.

I am planning on trying Alissa's Rye bagels too. Although I love rye and I make rye flat breads often and they are tasty - I am wondering if the bagels could be made using other grains besides rye.

I would love to get a nice plain like bagel where I could put salt on it. (sounds weird I know - I used to love the salt bagels that Einsteins used to sell - sometimes I would buy the plain ones and salt them myself at home!).

Has anyone tried making the bagel recipe with another grain besides rye?

I was thinking that a regular wheat bagel would be very versatile to make onion bagels and other types.

We have eaten nothing but Ezekiel bread for several years- so he is used to that, but Ezekiel bread still has a softness to it. I will give the burger bun a try. I don't really like the taste of rye and don't have any. Thanks.

Yasi, you will only get so far with raw bread, if people like your hubby expect it to be like baked bread, they will never be happy with it.

Raw crackers, chips, etc. are another story, I have had very stubborn SAD eaters go crazy over those.

Alissa's burger bun is a very handy recipe for bread. I love it for burgers myself when you get tired of your burgers being without a bun.

Also Queenfluff, I have made bagels with buckwheat, buckwheat and oats, buckwheat-oat bran, etc... I make them blueberry, apple cinnamon, savory with either herbs, onion, etc...

BTW, yasi, if your husband like onion rings, there are some nice raw recipes for onion rings, I've often had them at raw restaurants, usually with flax cracker crumbs, etc., they have that crispy, breaded and fried texture and look like that too, so you may also want to look for a recipe for onion rings. Yum!:)
