Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone with low thyroid has experienced a sore throat after eating cruciferous veggies, such as Kale, Arugula, Collards, etc. I just ate some plain Arugula and got a sore throat like I do when I have eaten soy. My naturapath once informed me that those with an underactive thyroid shouldn't eat soy or cruciferous veggies. I usually don't have them raw in a salad anyway, just in my green smoothies. However, I haven't had a lot of green smoothies either so perhaps I haven't had enought to notice it.

I have been told by someone that I trust, and have read that foods that contain goitrogens should be avoided by those with a thyroid problem. My wife has hashimoto's disease and tumors on her thyroid and we do try to avoid them for her as much as possible.

I've never experienced it, but I've read cruciferous veggies like those you mentioned and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and others should be eaten in moderation by people with hypothyroid. Here's one random website I found about it, though there are tons of others that generally say the same things: http://www.suite101.com/lesson.cfm/18912/2313/3

Thanks, guys. So there's no one else that can tell me whether they have noticed green smoothies giving them a sore throat.

Arugula is very bitter and burns my throat as well. I bought some on accident thinking it was baby greens and it was awful. Almost didn't get it down.

I have Hashimoto's and kale in smoothies doesn't bother me, but I once "burned" my throat putting too much kale in a green juice, the burning feeling lasted hours. So now I stick to some kale, mostly parsley and fruit in smoothies.
