Does anyone use these? Are they as nutritionally great as they say? Are they worth incorporating into the raw diet?

Some people say that it is poison, others say it is great for you. Who knows? I for one am getting sick of all of the conflicting info we read on food. For just about every food I can think of I can find someone who thinks it is bad for you and another that swears that it is the answer to the earth's problems. :(

I am going to stop reading all of that stuff and just do what's right for me and my well - being. It takes some experimenting but it's worth it. If we just stick to whole foods and stay away from the processed stuff we will be fine. Just read the labels if it has one and use your good judgement. :)

It's definitely not a raw food, and there has been plenty of discussion on the board about it having MSG in it. I started eating raw mostly because of all of the stomach aches I was getting. This was the first item on my raw diet that caused a stomach ache for me.

I would stay away from the stuff. Supposedly nama shoyu is an alternative to Braggs with a similar taste that has no MSG, but I am staying away from it too just in case. Apparently Alissa did put Braggs in her book, but she now does not use it and uses nama shoyu instead. (I say apparently because I can't really speak for her!)

I hope that's helpful information...

Hummmmm.... I found this REALLY interesting!!! I never thought about Braggs NOT being RAW because it was in Alissa's book... I love the taste of it, but I'm almost out, so I think I'll give Namu Shoyu (I hope that's right) a try... Thanks for the thread!!!

I have some and eat it very infrequently, I just don't care for the taste. I don't eliminate it, but use it maybe once a year.

Which brings up another question. How long before it goes bad? Yikes, I think my bottle is 3 years old. Scary.

I use it occasionally, and I've never felt sick...but it's strong stuff :)

Way to go!!!! I agree with you that there are just so much conflict with foods out there. I just stick to what feels right for me. Some foods my body doesn't handle well,so I don't use them but some okay. So I just look at how my body reacts to the certain food. Otherwise you can go crazy if you listen to everyone. Test it yourself and you will know.

I think you can leave it in your Will.....There is so Much SODIUM in it. But as I said I use it. I just have to not use so much at a time.

I heard it was brewed in giant vats with hydrochloric acid...

here's a site i found about it :

I personally have not used it in quite a while after initially reading information on it- I usually use nama shoyu or wheat-free tamari

The factory that makes the liquid aminos is named Walker Foods and it is in LA somewhere. I think that the recipe is a trade secret and they will not divulge how it is made...but I don't think they can deny the hydrochloric acid.

I did NOT work at Walker Foods. I worked for Patricia Bragg at her headquarters in Goleta, California. I was aware of the process by which liquid aminos was made, but never witnessed it being made.

I heard it through reliable sources that the soybean slurry (collected from soybean leftovers) is covered with hydrochloric acid in vats and left to "digest" .

The beans and acid mixture produces it's own heat, Patricia denies that it is heated beyond 98° and I tend to believe that.

I think Patricia tells people it is simply made with beans in barrels of water for obvious reasons. She is a self-proclaimed health crusader and I think she really wants to believe that it is made with pure distilled water only. She also doesn't want to loose her customers, or credibility with her health followers. She will not even listen to others who tell her that mislabeling a product is not honest, nor legal.

If you think about it, hydrochloric acid is a natural product, produced by our bodies every second of everyday we live. It is what digests our food and supplies nutrition to our bodies. There is nothing unhealthy about hydrochloric acid. What is unhealthy is the addition of the base to neutralize the acid...this is what gives the beans the salty flavor...I believe it to be something on the order of baking soda, another product that is not inherently bad for us in small quantities.

Bragg does not isolate any of the proteins released by the hydrochloric bath. The liquid that rises to the surface in the procedure is skimmed off, neutralized and bottled, making it concentrated protein.

So, is this bad? I believe that the product is not unhealthy. It is salty tasting but tests at only 10% of table salt. It tests with no msg detected at all except for a trace of glutamic acid (an amino acid.) Why then does Bragg deny the addition of hydrochloric acid and the base to neutralize it? I am at a loss to explain that.

Each time I have used it, the next day my handsand face are puffy.
So I have been using wheat free soy sauce instead.

Thanks to everyone for the responses! I guess having something on the shelf at a store that claims to be good ..... with books written!.... does not make it so! I am totally in agreement with using something that is good for you, but I wanted to know other opinions. thanks!
