I've been raw for 2 weeks now and recently (the past 2 days basically) started having some acid reflux issues.. I used to have esophagitis which was pretty much cured with Prevacid, and hadn't been having these problems for quite some time... So I'm wondering, which raw foods might cause acid reflux or heartburn or other similar annoyances? And does anyone else [still] have these issues even though they are raw?

Do you practice food combining? That could be part of the issue.

Back in the mid 1980's I had acid reflux so bad my throat was frequently raw and I hated it. :( Then I found the book "Fit For Life" by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond, which was one of the most popular health books of its day. The book turned me on to food combining and I applied the principles of the book realizing that its like soap -- in order to work it has to be applied. It worked ! To this day I continue to apply the principles of food combining and have never had acid reflux again. :)

I don't know anything about food combining. I'll look into it. Thanks!

I think the problem foods can be different for everyone. My friend can't have onions, peppers or any kind of strong seasoning. My mom can't have certain seasonings or tomatoes. For me, it's chocolate. Raw or otherwise. Oddly, chocolate wasn't a problem for me until I started using those GERD meds. Now I can't have even a teensy bite of it.

For me it wasn't the foods but rather the combinations of foods that were in the stomach at the same time. I didn't stop eating any particular food. I just learned how to time them so that foods that work better together in a certain digestive environment are in the stomach at the same time and foods that require a different digestive environment are in the stomach at a different time. It allows the foods to digest well and without conflict or competition for the digestive effort. That said, I definitely agree with you that everyone's different and what worked for me may not be the right answer for someone else.

I am just throwing this out there because it's different from the other answers you got so far... maybe your past problems were not necessarily "cured" but they had been camouflaged or dormant? I'm thinking that maybe raw is drudging up what was already there? I say practice food combining (for sure!) but also if it doesn't go away, stay the course... maybe it's a healing crisis?

Good luck!

How about adding in fermented foods like sauerkraut or kimchee as helpful?

I know i am eating those vegan frozen bars, Rice Dream, not raw, and the chocolate was making me purge violently. I just discovered that the other day after long time of loving them. I would be out of control for a minute throwing up like a pig. I'm at the point of watching more and seeing about the food combining too.I suppose I got the first hint, didn't realize, w hen I would wake up during the night, jump up actually, as the acid was probably making its way up my throat. No more of that, but still, the sympotoms of acid reflux. Chrio said he can fix this and does a 1-2 adjustment. So far 1x didn't work, so may go back this week, but still continue watching foods. I also tend to overeat good foods too and lack drinking as much water as I should take.

Yup, I had it VERY bad before eating lots of raw foods. It's better now, but i MUST stay away from garlic. Can't digest that one. Here's a good food combining chart btw:
