I live on an island that is quite ridiculously expensive to buy an of the raw basic non "fresh" items like nuts and sundried fruits, cold-pressed olive oil, etc. I used to just buy these items at a fair price at Trader Joe's when I did not live here.
Now I have to take a ferry with my car to drive far to get to one. Or so I thought. I found out yesterday that I could take (the passenger ferry, and then) two buses for a total of about an hour and a half for a total of $2 round trip to go to the closest TJ's. So I went and stocked up, paid about 50-70% less for all of my goodies.
I didn't plan to get almonds because of the pasteurization nonsense... They did not have any California-grown almonds at TJ's, but they did have some almonds grown in Spain. I assume this is because of the amount of people who really do want raw almonds. All of their roasted, salted and flavored almonds were still from California. The cost for the ones from Spain was $6 for 12 oz.
For anyone else with a Trader Joe's nearby, this might be helpful to know.
