My wife would like to try raw eating. She has a thyroid condition and tumors that we have been working on with supplements and would like to have her go raw. I do most of the cooking, and raw food prep for the family, it is a hobby of mine that I enjoy.

The problem is that she loves warm food, especially soups. Growing up in a English household she is quite used to a warm dinner on the table. What can I do to incorporate as much warm food into the diet without killing it from the heat? Do you have any favorite recipes/methods of doing this?

Thanks

If you eat things right out of the dehydrator they're rather warm but still below the 112-115 degree mark.

With soups, you could put a thermometer in the pot maybe and keep it on very low?

Welcome to the board!!! :D

I set my oven to 100 degrees and put "whatever" in a ceramic bowl and heat it in the oven for 30 minutes. It made a world of difference when I made raw spanish rice with cauliflower.

You could also try adding warming spices to recipes, if she likes them. Cayenne, ginger, pepper, cinnamon...there are lots more. I find they make food seem warmer than it really is.

Great Suggestions!

I am looking into a dehydrator, but till it gets here I'll try spices and warming it in the oven on low heat.

:D yeah best things are to try adding things like cumin seeds and maybe paprika , when making the soup add slighty warm water for starters , when your done blending ( which also creates a minimal heated sort of effect)
pop in the oven in the bowl for under 100c for a little bit or put it on the lowest setting in a pot on the stove for a few minutes stiring and keeping and eye , when you ddip your finger in and its warm but not hot , serve immediatly

Is it really OK to over warm foods and still consider them raw?

Id say so , were all in agreement that under like 100 ezmyes are still there , so just using a very low temp to gently warm it makes it raw in my book .
that being said ive yet to actually bother warming something up since going raw , dehydrate to make veggie burgers and bannana bread yes but not yet made something then heated it up to eat there and then/.

If you purchase a VitaMix blender, you can make raw soups that are warm to the touch, but I've read are still raw. The warmth comes from the kineteic energy of the blade speed. I LOVE mine and have made some fantastic raw soups with it!

One of my favorite soups is made with a base of carrot juice with a red pepper blended in, and sea salt, olive oil and garlic..and whatever other seasonings you like..and when I blend it, it warms up enough to give me that cozy, "soup" eating feeling...

I also recently made a miso soup ( miso is not Raw but is "living" since it is cultured and unpasteurized) and added marinated, dehydrated onion slices. I heated the water to warm to the touch, and whisked in the miso, then added the onion slices.. It was yummy and warming, I would say.. Again, you could add other seasonings and also mushrooms or other veggies..maybe some seaweed..

here are lots of dehydrated recipes that are warm when they come out of the D.. like curried veggies, also the spices in that give an additional feeling of warmth..

Blessings to you and your wife...:)

I would be "the man" if I could make her soups that are both warm and raw.

I'm getting a vitamix in a week or two and I can hardly wait.

I have found that since going raw I like my foods at room temp. I leave things out on the counter until they are not cold anymore before I eat them. Seems weird but it's just the way it is for me. Most of the time if I want it a little warmer or I want something room-temp faster I'll fill up a large bowl with hot tap water and then put whatever it is that I'm going to eat in a smaller bowl and let it sit inside of the big bowl of tap water until it's warm. Good luck on being "The Man" ! :D

I told her about your thyroid story, very inspiring.

She is going to go raw with me, 100%, she just agreed to it this morning. That's great because we can encourage each other and work together. I tend to take care of the food, (would say do the cooking but I guess that doesn't count any longer)

Green Smoothies are in the future, as soon as we get the vita-mix. I'm a little leery about any type of sea veggies because of the potential of her being allergic. If she is in a restaurant that is cooking shrimp she will have an asthma attack, that is how bad it is now. We are taking iodine, however, in a purified form.

We went to her endocrinologist's office today for a routine visit, the tumors have not grown in the past year it seems, now we need to work on shrinking them and getting her levels good so she can get off the meds. She is taking armor thyroid, not synthroid. A year ago they wanted to remove her thyroid because the tumors had tripled in size in 2 months.
