I'm new to the forum (joined 7-24) and I have a question about eggs. As you probably know an Orange Julius is made by putting the juice of some freshly squeezed oranges into the blender and then separating out the raw egg yolk from an egg and blending the two ingredients together. Would the Orange Julius be considered an OK drink in the raw food program or not ?

and for your question,
some people follow raw diets that include eggs, dairy and meat,
but this is a raw vegan board and so it does not fit the diet followed here

It would technically be a raw drink, but it isn't a raw vegan drink. This board promotes the raw vegan lifestyle, however there's several people who aren't completely 100% raw vegan here. It's always up to you what you choose to eat or drink!

If you want to try an Orange Julius-ish type drink at home, try blending together a frozen banana, ice, and orange juice with a little bit of agave nectar. It's SO good and very close to what the original tastes like! :)

Depends on how you intend to do raw (the raw eggs part at least) as there are some raw fooders who are not raw vegan and they incorporate raw animal products such as meat, eggs and dairy. However, we don't advocate or recommend doing that here on RFT as this is a raw vegan/vegetarian forum. Also, there is a greater risk of salmonella with raw eggs, so be aware of that.

So, Orange Julius doesn't use pasteurized juice? I thought they did for some reason (it's been YEARS since I've had one after I found out about the eggs) but if it's all raw and fresh, then I suppose it's okay for a raw fooder who isn't raw vegan.

i dont think ive ever had one of those, but im skeptical to think a mall food store would serve raw egg...seems like such a liability? from what their site says their almond coconut cream flavoring contains egg white and milk solids...doesnt sound raw. but i cant get a good answer on the regular orange one..

i worked at an orange julius as a kid ..we never used raw egg ..maybe its different up here

we used a powder that we were told was a powdered sugar/powdered coconut/powdered egg white base with concentrated pasturized juices :)

you can make something similar mixing fresh squeezed oranges, some ice, a dash of vanilla, some coconut milk , and a bit of agave to taste ..

veryy yummy :)

According to Wikipedia,

Originally, a raw egg blended into the drink was offered as an option. This was seen as a good source of protein for body builders. However, the option was later dropped for food safety reasons, and bananas are now offered as a substitute.

EW!!!  To think I use to love this drink & thought the only thing wrong with it was added sugar. It's been years since I had one though. There's tons of better healthy smoothies or juices we can make ourselves. Coconut oil is a great flavor enhancer if you don't use a fresh coconut. Agave, dates or figs are great sweetners, though I find I rarely need to add them to a smoothie.

Thanks for the information. Looks like the homemade version of the Orange Julius that I used to make at home was different from the commercial variety. :)
