Hi. I bought a regular coconut (brown) and I made a few holes in it to drain out the coconut milk. How do I eat the rest of the coconut?

Thanks!

whack it with a meat tenderizer while holding it till it cracks, then hit along the crack base (to advance the crack) till you get it where you call pull it apart now I place one large half on a towel (dish towle, bar mop) shell up then start hitting it. crack it in half. Now do the same to those pieces.

when you are doiing this some of the meat will just fall off the shell from the flexing of it.

what does not fall off the shell I pry it off with a butter knife CAREFULLY.

I am a pro at it now I can shell a cocanut in 5 min.
You can eat the thin brown skin on the flesh. It is very good for you.

Oh and make sure the nut is fresh or it will taste yuck!
meat is PURE bright white! no yellow and not slimy feeling. if it is dont bother you will not like it

So you can just eat the meat right out of the coconut? It's good that way? Like, you don't even need to find recipes? Sweet!

I've got two brown coconuts, but had no idea how to open or eat them. I'm excited! :D

Then again, if anybody has any good recipes that feature coconut, I'm all ears. :)

What is the advantage of eating them? How do they taste? Do you break into them the same way and eat them?

Thanks!!! :)

they're so good they make me want to move somewhere where they grow on trees!

Get one RML ASAP! I agree, I love the water. Aaaaaaahhhh!

The meat has its uses too!

You get into them differently. It takes a little practice but basically you hone off some of the extra fiber to get close to the tip of the coconut, then you get a cleaver while singing the soundtrack from the shower scene from psycho, and you whack off the tip to create a small hole. Then you pour out the nectar of the gods, then you go about chopping into that coconut further, and basically you use a spoon to scoop out the soft meat.

There's some videos on YouTube on this. I've never done it myself, but some of the methods seemed pretty easy. Hm, let's see if I can find it...

You can shred the coconut meat in a food processor and dehydrate it. Then you'll have your own shredded coconut which is, of course, good for macaroons, cereal, etc.

Young coconuts or Thai young coconuts are just immature coconuts that have been picked at the tender age of oh 4-6 months of life. The "jelly" inside the immature coconut is called meat and can sometimes be the consistancy of ...well...jelly, and can be the consistancy of the more common firm coconut meat but very soft and pliable. Each coconut on the inside may be different in color and texture; from pure white to pink or purple tinged. Make sure you smell them once they are open and taste the water. They should not be sour or smell sour. I usually drink the water and scrape out the meat and freeze it until I have something I want to make.

There are many benefits to drinking the coconut water, one being it is full of electrolytes that help to replenish minerals you may have lost during a workout. Did you know that it is identical in composition to human blood plasma??? Yup....from what I've read the medical profession will use it when nothing else is available in emergency medical procedures!!!!

And it is so very yummy. Funny you should bring up this topic. I told my husband the other day that I wished that coconut water came right out of the tap line at our place!! I could bathe in it and drink the water......mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! ! I truely keep no less that 12 in my fridge per week. And I probably drink the water of two coconuts per day. I would drink more but I have to have some control!!! LOL!!

It's real easy to open them once you get the hang of it. Alissa's DVD has by far the easiest method of opening a coconut I've seen. No waste to the water and no potential hacking off any important body parts.

Lots of your questions you've been posting you may find answers to if you use the banana icon at the top of your screen. It is a "search" icon. Type in "young coconuts", for example, you will find threads that pertain to your search. I use this tool all the time when I have a question. Most times I find my questions have already been asked and answered numerous times before!

I highly recommend buying a copy of Alissa's DVD and BOOK today!!! They are valuable in information and lots of yummy easy recipes to try. She even gives you a shopping list and menu plan for each week! How can you go wrong with someone spelling it out for you!!!!

Good luck MusicalRawLady!!!:D

The mature brown coconuts have more fat in them so if weight loss is your goal you might want skip them for a time being.

I usually break them up in a ziploc bag so pieces don't go flying around the kitchen.

It's very logical to assume that since the coconuts are so fatty that they will hinder weight loss, but suprise! :) I have actually found a lot of info on the net about coconut oil helping with weight loss because it raises the metabolism. :D It is classified as a saturated fat but it is actually not a typical saturated fat.

http://www.coconutdiet.com/health_benefits_coconut_oil.htm

The Research

So how do people in the tropics do it? How can people on traditional diets consume so much saturated fat and remain slim and healthy?

Researchers have known for quite some time that the secret to health and weight loss associated with coconut oil is related to the length of the fatty acid chains contained in coconut oil. Coconut oil contains what are called medium chain fatty acids, or medium chain triglycerides (MCTs for short). These medium chain fatty acids are different from the common longer chain fatty acids found in other plant-based oils. Most vegetable oils are composed of longer chain fatty acids, or triglycerides (LCTs). LCTs are typically stored in the body as fat, while MCTs are burned for energy. MCTs burn up quickly in the body. They are a lot like adding kindling to a fireplace, rather than a big damp log.

Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of MCTs. Not only do MCTs raise the body’s metabolism leading to weight loss, but they have special health-giving properties as well. The most predominant MCT in coconut oil, for example, is lauric acid. Lipid researcher Dr. Jon Kabara states “Never before in the history of man is it so important to emphasize the value of Lauric Oils. The medium-chain fats in coconut oil are similar to fats in mother’s milk and have similar nutriceutical effects. These health effects were recognized centuries ago in Ayurvedic medicine. Modern research has now found a common link between these two natural health products----their fat or lipid content. The medium chain fatty acids and monoglycerides found primarily in coconut oil and mother’s milk have miraculous healing power.”5 Outside of a human mother’s breast milk, coconut oil is nature’s most abundant source of lauric acid and medium chain fatty acids.

They are the best thing for me to eat/drink after working out. I have the tendency to load up on plain water too much and coconut water helps me feel more balanced.

I adore young coconuts. I get them for 89 cents at my asian market (Is that cheap, or expensive?)

I blend the meat with the water, as apparently Alissa does too (I've had the book for ages, yet never saw her recipe).
Anyways, pour the water in the blender, put the meat in the blender too, and blend away. I blend a bit of ice into it too, or pour it over ice.
Its great. Sometimes I add cacao or Carob, and some cinnamon.

Interesting... I think I'd heard that before, but forgotten it. It sounds familiar, anyways.

I only have the mature brown coconuts in my area. But, I buy them because I love coconut. This sounds cruel but I poke their eyes out insert a straw and drink up all the water or I pour it over ice. To get the water to flow out you have to poke atleast two eyes out. I always eat some of the coconut meat while prying it out of the shell. Then I soak it overnight in filtered water. The next day I peel the brown skin off (I like it snowy white) and shred the meat in my food processor. Now you can dehydrate the shreds or make coconut milk. To make coconut milk...I pour warm water over the coconut meat and let set for a while then I blend it in my blender and make it just like I do almond milk. The milk is good with some chocolate powder mixed in or with some frozen pineapple. It is not as creamy if you don't pour the warm water over the coconut meat.
