Help! I am trying to get to 100% raw. I love jalepenos on my salads just to give them a little extra flavor. The problem is that I do not love raw jalepenos. I have tried them on my salads and just can't stand the taste. So I'm bad - I put the cooked ones on. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I could substitute those peppers with so my salads have that zing that I like? :D

Maybe habaneros would be a good substitute. If not a bit of cayenne on you salad would give you a similar 'zing'.

What don't you like about raw jalapenos? The crunchiness? If that's the case, put some in a dehydrator for about 5-7 hours and that softens them up quite a bit.

VERY hard to go from pickeled to raw. Raw ones have no taste by comparison

It is the crunchiness - the texture. I prefer the texture of the cooked peppers. But I am not opposed to some great seasoning that I can sprinkle on as a substitute!

It is the crunchiness - the texture. Also, they don't have the intense flavor of the cooked peppers. But I am not opposed to some great seasoning that I can sprinkle on as a substitute!

I really am going to try it - it sounds easy to make. I don't really like to do anything too complicated.;) Littlemarie I am going to try your seasoning ideas too! :D

Hmmm.
What if you take the fresh jalepenos and slice them up and place them into the jar with the liquid from the cooked ones and let them "marinate". You know they're raw, and most of the liquid drains off...could work in the meanwhile.

I think vinegar kills them.

Real pickle does not have vinegar.

Beppa66, along the lines of what you are saying I also thought about buying a jar of jalepenos and just sprinkling a little of the juice from the jar on my salads. I've got to figure this out. On the other hand it's not an everyday thing so maybe a few cooked peppers here and there won't hurt:confused: I probably shouldn't have said that huh?

try ripe jalapenos. Ripe jalapenos are RED not green. LOL, they have some taste!

If it's the salt and vinegar you're missing you could make some quite easily and that is a good idea.

I think you're ok until you find a substitute that works for you. Going to have to try that myself, because I think there's some jalepenos in the jar lurking in my fridge too. (wink & gasp)
