I will be making Alissa's fudge balls which uses dates. I didn't happen to have dates but did have organic figs. I just wondered what it would taste like. Has anyone tried it? Also, has anyone used figs in recipes, such as smoothies, etc.? Thank You

Are you talking about dried figs? You might just try a small amount and see if you like it. It will not be as sweet as a date so a little honey to make it thicker might work the same. But you will have to use your tastebuds to deceide.

Yes, that's what I meant...dried figs. My husband bought them by mistake and I don't know how to use them as I can't find many recipes using dried figs. Thank you for your suggestion. And thank you, too, snowdrop for telling me about the fresh figs.

I used dried figs in raw apple pie and that tasted just fine.

i find you can interchange them. i prefer figs :) i find dates too sweet, and theyre not so good for my blood sugar. all dried fruit has a lot of sugar, but with figs they have so much fibre it balances it out. theyre actually recommended for diabetics because theyre so loaded with fibre.

yes they are crunchier :D i LOVE that about them. so satisfying. lol.

i also usually use them instead of raisins! the black mission figs are good for that.

I think Juliano uses figs instead of dates in all his recipes in his restaurant (Raw) now. Everything I tried there was awesome (fig mustard... yum!!) so it would seem the figs worked well :)

I finally found dates. I bought 5 lbs because it was a better price. I assume it will take me about a month to go through these. Any tips on storage?

Nope :( Yeah, I ran over to the library and frantically flipped through the index as soon as I got home from Los Angeles, LOL! I LOVE figs! It was like heaven. I should've asked if they sold it by the pint...or gallon :D

I think his book was written in 1999, and he has changed his philosophy since then, I believe. He no longer uses dates and some other fruits which are included in the book. So I'm totally hoping he writes a revised book sometime soon.

strong: i just keep my dates in a container in the fridge. they keep for ages. i buy a load at once as well, but dont go through them very quickly and theyre fine.

Thanks for the storage tip. I have been keeping them in the fridge and it works great. Sorry about the delay in response.
