It's only day five...what is up with that?! Twice a day!

It's good and what SHOULD be considered "normal". All that fiber is pushing things through as it should. I think ideally it should be 2-3x a day or however many meals you have a day.

Believe it or not, 2-3x a day is NORMAL.
Generally, I feel the potential need to go after a big meal- breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Right after eating I feel the peristalsis kicking in.

I feel cleaned out and good! Embrace it! Your risk of colon cancer is being cut down.

Yup. Some people think that having a BM twice a week is normal. NOT. Just relax. You are doing great.

Just think about babys, They eat and poop. Eat and poop all the time. It is a normal thing to go a short time after you eat. But then people starting eating things that change things around and start cloging things up and This becomes Normal for them. Just like the I just read on here some people think if is normal to go Once a week. I remember Not to long ago I would sometimes go ever two or even three days. Boy I am glad I went raw. This never happends now. Doug in Calif Living green and loving it.  :)

Before, I wouldn't even think about it! I remember taking whole weekend vacations and never pooping once.
I thought it was "convenient"....riiiiight.
I can't imagine how much extra weight I was carrying around in my colon/intestines.
YUCK.

Heh, I don't think comparing the digestion of adults to that of babies is particularly useful. I'm sure you noticed the differences. I'm glad my poop doesn't smell like baby poop, for one thing. ;)

I also don't think it's normal to go a "short time" after you eat. Food takes time to digest (like 12 hours). You want it to come out like a well-formed turd, not like diarrhea.

I think that the "meal in-meal out" concept doesn't necessarily mean that the meal you just took in, it's-a-comin'-out right then! :p But moreso that you take in a meal and then a previously-eaten meal should be coming out...something to that effect. Before raw, my meals would just pile up and pile up and pile up and then one day one of them meals would TRY to make it's way out and...well, no need to get TOO graphic, but you get the picture! :D

But I can see the relation of babies to adults in that, babies, before they're introduced to all the excess crap most adults eat, have the ideal digestive behaviors. The formation issue of course won't be the same until they begin eating solid foods, but the concept of the time frame they go is, IMO, how it "should" be for adults.

I usually feel the need to use the bathroom soon after each meal. I don't know what's up with that, but I am used to it now.

I also love the fact that I don't have to kill myself in order to get things "out". With the water and fiber, it's easy now :D

And another bonus, you don't need a can of air freshener LOL

Yes, I agree. It should not be a "run-through" or there might be something wrong.

I have done a lot of reading and have personal experiences with doing several week long fasts/colon cleanses. I am known on another board (a homeschooling board) as the "Queen of Clean". I shared my experiences about colon cleansing with a caveat for anyone who did not want TMI. :D I have a friend who is "doctors and medicines" all the way and I am natural, herbs and essential oils. I still cannot convince her that a bm once every other day is not normal.

When you eat, you should go to the bathroom. If you are not going 2-3 times a day, then something is wrong. There is a blockage somewhere. It should take about 8-12 hours for your morning meal to pass.

I think that people don't talk much about this subject because it is so personal, but then how do you know when something is not normal. It just makes sense to me that if food is going in three times a day, every day, it should be coming out at about the same rate. The body gives off warning signs when something is wrong. This is one of those signs.

Fruits and veggies,
Eat all you want
The more you eat,
The more you poop.
The more you poop
The better you feel.
Fruits and veggies for every meal.:p :D TMI

Babies have clean digestive systems and are not introduced to a SAD diet (yet). So I can see the comparison there.

"They" say it should take 8-12 hours for food to digest. This is most likely for a SAD diet. It probably isn't taking into consideration a raw diet at all, like most diet/nutrition information is not.

I know for me it takes about 5 hours for a meal to pass, if not less. Could be because I"m missing some of my insides that makes the transit time much shorter...I also go right after every meal.

I've been going after almost every meal too. I've had anywhere from 3-6 BMs a day since I went raw a little over a week ago. I feel so clean! : ) But I don't know how everyone's talking about not needing air fresheners! That aspect of it hasn't changed for me yet. Hmm. Maybe my body's still getting rid of those last SAD toxins?

I was told in a living food course that if you eat three times a day you should poop three times a day, or else you´re constipated. And within 20 minutes after you´ve eaten you should feel the need to go to the bathroom, or else you´re constipated.

In my opinion I think a lot of the odor can be attributed to the percentage of "friendly" bacteria in a persons colon. Different bacteria feed on different foods. The good or "friendly" bacteria feed on fresh foods from the garden while the bad or Putrefactive bacteria feed on meat. The "friendly" bacteria usually have little or no smell as they are helping to break down the plants while the meat eating bacteria usually smell like something died in there. In my opinion it is a good idea to promote the "friendly" bacteria to avoid having to buy air fresheners. Taking probiotics can help to improve the percentage of "friendly" bacteria in the GI tract but whether probiotics are taken or not if a person is eating enough of the fresh raw foods from the garden the "friendly" bacteria will continue to increase their percentage of the good/bad bacteria in the colon. I take an Acidophilus probiotic supplement with a raw food meal so that the probiotic is fully supported for maximum benefit.

If you are missing some of your insides, that probably would make the transit time shorter. I'm not saying that when a person eats a meal, it then takes 8-12 houirs before they go to the bathroom. They probably will need to go after eating, but they won't be voiding the meal they just ate. That will take longer to travel.

When you think about it this is really good news for the raw foodist. When you can stop buying air freshener for the bathroom it means that the balance of "friendly" to "unfriendly" bacteria in your gut has changed enough so that the percentage of good friendly bacteria is winning and your beautiful inside where your health foundation starts. The day you realize you no longer need bathroom air freshener is the the day you realize that the raw food program is really working for you.

Well, I'm reading alot of info from you all saying that you should poop a while after your last meal, which happens to me when I do eat meals, but for the most part I just graze through out the day, and usually go #2 about once a day. Is that bad? Do you guys think I should eat meals instead of grazing?

This is just me theorizing, but perhaps with us grazers, our bodies eliminate when IT'S "definition" of a meal has been consumed. Like for example, maybe after we've grazed on the equivalent to what some would perhaps eat in one full meal sitting, then it'll be ready to go poopy.

well just to give you guys an anatomy of my life of poop, i have been constipated my whole life. a small poop every couple days was normal, if not even good. i think this is cuz i stuffed my face all the time. now i poop 2-4 times a day. it is wonderful. such a weight off my shoulders.

These days it sometimes shocks me how much I go to the bathroom. Still. It really does feel better out than in. That's the stuff the body doesn't want...

But going number one, I'm going less often. I think my body is starting to really use a lot of the water I'm drinking to hydrate me! Yay.

I don't think you can say what is "normal" and what is not. My husband eats the worst food possible, he's in construction so somtimes it's breakfast and lunch at the fast food joints. HE goes 2 sometimes 3 times a day, every morning, never fails. i on the other hand have been vegitarian since i was 11 and 95% vegan and very high if not all raw the past year, and i still go once every few days. I've done the master cleanse a few times last year, it changes nothing. I think some of us just have a different system!

you could be eating too much. i ate continuously all day since i was a kid and had such a problem with it. nowadays it is weird if i only go once a day. i have only eaten once today and have gone twice. its awesome.

07-27-2007, 01:17 PM
haha. i don't think i eat too much, i don't ever eat the same amount in any given day... i just think..that throughout my life and all the changes i've done in my diet...its always been pretty regularly every 2 days. sometimes more, sometimes less, but never a drastic change. Of course if i had a cup of coffee or some prune juice..that might be a different story;)

Another benefit of Raw with BMs is that ... this is going to be a little more graphic than I'd like but oh well...

You think you're just going to have a small BM but then you see what all passed out of you and you go  omg I hope it all goes down.

This happened to me the other day and thank goodness I was at work where we have "power toilets" LOL!!! :o :o :o

Well, I'm not one to typically discuss this publicly, but I'm going more than three times per day. Before going raw, I was going about 3x per day. Now, it's even more frequent, sometimes 4-5x's per day. I know that I'm losing weight & I'm drinking lots of H20. Don't know if I'm still detoxing, but I'm definitely regular. And it's not diarrhea.
