Look for organic wines that say "no added sulfites" - those are the only raw kinds to the best of my knowledge.

Whole Foods has an amazing selection of these, just ask.

Trader Joe's and other liquor stores tend to have 1-2 organic, no sulfite added wines. I know Frey's is one brand name that is good.

I'm in college so I looked into this one :-)

All wine is raw (to my knowledge) but you should look for organic or one that says no sulfites - wine can be beneficial but the sulfites will counteract the benefits. You can also make your own alcohol - including mead, which i hear is very tasty

I personally don't think I have had organic wine (I'm only 17 so I can't really buy it :-p) but if i were going to drink it would probably be red wine

I was wondering about Mead...

From what I understand ALL wines contain naturally occurring sulfites. Organic contain no added sulfites.

Personally, I'm raw for my health and adding alcohol to my body just doesn't make sense... so I may not know what I'm talking about in that first sentence.

I've had mead, I give it the big thumbs down. There's a reason it went the way of the dodo bird IMO.

I partake of raw red wine. and white, and rose, and prosecco, and...:o I have wonderful friends who make raw pure raspberry wine, it is DIVINE! And I make my own Framboise too, though that involves raw raspberries and a little distilled spirits.

Certified Organic wines are vegan. LOL if you find a good one let me know. I'm still waiting...

A little hedonism is good for your health. Just follow Mark Twain's health advice and never smoke more than one cigar at a time.;)

A couple drinks a month shouldn't kill ya. However, brain research shows that we shouldn't drink alcohol at all until after age 25! So if there's any young'uns reading this, no getting blasto ok!

this came up in a raw cookbook and I thought of this thread because someone mentioned mead. This doesn't sound half bad, and it's sparkling... maybe worth a try!

4 cups dried fruit - prunes, raisins, apricots, berries
1/3 cup raw apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup raw honey
dried hibiscus flowers (from the health food store)
water to fill a gallon after fruit is in it too.

place all ingredients in a 1 gallon container. Cover with cheesecloth and let sit in warm spot for 2 or more days. Strain and refrigerate when it has reached your desired potency.

Hmmm. That looks like something that may be good for iron deficiency as well.

I'm curious... why are non-organic wines not vegan?

Eilene

I have never heard that. To the best of my knowledge...all wines are Vegan.

Hi

Not all wines are vegan. The organic wine company has a good selection of vegan wines, I've tried a few of them, and I really like the 2005 Côtes-du-Rhône.. but I don't think there are any losers ;)

"Awareness about vegetarian and vegan issues around the world was heightened, particularly in the United Kingdom, in the light of BSE or "mad cow disease". Both organic and non-organic winemakers frequently use animal products during production to clear or "fine" the wine to keep it from turning cloudy for example, or to remove "off" tastes and flavors.

"All our wines are vegetarian friendly, since the only fining agents used are derived from milk and eggs (caseine and albumine). However, following the growing demand, our list of vegan wines is growing steadily."

For a wine to be classified as vegan, no animal derived products of any kind can be used in the clarification/fining process. "

Mead isn't really vegan either, it's made out of honey.

Exurb, did you try that recipe? I think I'm going to try it with agave nectar instead of honey. I'll let you know if it works out. Thanks!

the bar I go to makes me peach and cantaloupe martinis. they are super tasty. I was drinking organic red wine at first but it gave me massive headaches!

I have made a lot of fruit wines in the past, it is a very enjoyable hobby in my opinion. Some of the fruits are cooked at first and you need to add sugar to some recipes, so be choosy if you are going to try it. At least you know what is in them if you make them.

It is my understanding that you can make up to 200 gallons of wine per individual in the United States per year.
