I bought the Nature's Variety frozen raw food for my cats this weekend. I got the beef and it comes in little medallions. I let it defrost in the fridge and cut it up for them. They seemed to enjoy licking it, but then my little guy actually swallowed a small bite. He proceeded to back up and throw up 3 times. I know it couldn't have been bad meat b/c it literally came right back up without him having a chance to digest. Could it be that he was just grossed out? Also, a few months back I bought the dehydrated raw medallions from the same company that you reconstitute with water...that made the two of them throw up a total of 10 times in the 1/2 hour after they ate. Do you think it's the brand? Anybody have experience with this? Thanks.

Poor kitty. Is she spoiled and finicky? If so, then tough it out and she'll have to come around. You know what's best for her, but then there are ways to transition the cat. Mix it with her old food for a while, perhaps.

My feral cat prefers raw meats. My other cat is still not so gung-ho about it. It's a lot better than that junk kibble that I fed them at the beginning.

He may have just swallowed too big of a piece. My cats are raw fed (real raw, not frozen processed) and once in a great while if they try to swallow a piece that's too big it comes right back up and they chew it better before swallowing again. Maybe because it's so processed and hamburgery-gloppy like it just looks more like vomit when it's coming back up to be chewed more. I don't know. I hope you don't give up on raw feeding!

My cat throws up some things. Beef is one. No matter how it is fixed.

Do you think I might have better luck if I try the chicken or lamb? Frozen is the only way I can do this. I am vegan for moral reasons above health and have been pretty much veg since 14...there is no way I can deal with preparing the raw meat for them...as much as I love them. Also, he didn't take a very big bite. He's actually not a finicky eater. He tries to eat everything - including banana, watermelon, green smoothies and blended salad. I'd say he likes veggies more, but he got into a raw steak my roommate left out a couple weeks ago and he howled like crazy when I took it away. Of course he didn't get past the licking stage before I found him so I don't know if that would have made him throw up as well.

Try chicken. That's the most popular BARF recipe.

I'll try that. I was thinking it's unnatural for cats to eat beef anyway...not like they would kill a cow in the wild!
