View Full Version : Cheesy Sprouts - Popcorn replacement

Recently I decided to sprout some chickpeas with no idea how I was going to eat them after they were sprouted. Then on my way out to buy some more carrots for my carrot juicing... I smelled the scent of popcorn and salty-cheesiness. I didn't flinch because I knew I had better food than that at home and that I was going to have some amazingly tasty fresh carrot juice soon.

On my way back home I smelled the popcorn smell again. After finishing my juice I remembered my sprouted chickpeas! I just rinsed them out, dried them a bit then sprinkled them with Nutritional Yeast (not raw, but better than popcorn or dairy).

I just finished eating them. Yummmy! So cheesy and tasty and it filled my desire for snacky salty foods. I saw a recipe similar to this one made with cashews... but I actually like chickpeas better, because then I can save cashews for my cheesecakes and deserts. ;)

Enjoy, and let me know if you like it. :) (Also let me know if you don't like eating chickpeas just sprouted... some people don't like it, so be careful!)

PixieLed,

My mom sprouted chick peas once and they were hard and bitter tasting so maybe she didn't do it right. Did you buy just the raw chickpeas to do this?

Where is the cashew version of this you mentioned. I loved popcorn and am trying to find an alternative to it too.

I tried the chick peas by themselves and "aechkk". Think I'll give them another go with the yeast...thanks for the idea. Perhaps we won't have to toss them afterall...

Daughter and I eat sprouted chickpeas and even green peas out of hand just like popcorn. I don't think I'd like the yeast on them. But then... I don't like yeast on popcorn.

Hi, here is the link to the cashew version:

And be careful, indeed not everyone likes the chickpeas just like that. I just soaked my chickpeas in water for the whole day and rinsed them a few times... Next time I might let them sprout a bit longer.

Good luck!

This is very interesting. I love popcorn. I still make it every once and a while with coconut oil and put lots of salt and nutritional yeast on it but that would be great to have a raw popcorn.

My bf wants to figure out if you can make popcorn in a dehyrdator. :)

queenfluff,

You know I got my Excalibur a week ago and keep thinking about what I can make in it that I haven't tried. I'm dreaming of popcorn and haven't had any in 44 days. I came up with the idea of getting fresh corn on the cob or frozen and sticking it in the dehydrator with nutritional yeast on it. Not sure how it would come out. I don't think the heat is hot enough in the dehydrator to pop the popcorn kernels but let me know if it works for you.

queenfluff, you can make corn nuts in the dehydrator. Just salt and dehydrate the fresh or frozen corn. Someone here made them last year I think, and said they were very good.
