I would suggest greens and fruits for green smoothies. Tomatoes for salads. Whatever you see that appeals to you. Try something new you've never eaten before. A lot of times the farmers will cut something open and let you try...
have fun!!!

I read some tips a while ago for attending farmers markets.

One of them is to take a lot of small bills with you, so it's easier for the farmers to make change.

Another is to either go early or late in the hours of the market, depending on what is important to you. If you go early, they won't have sold out of stuff and you'll get first pick. If money is a problem, go late-ish, and when they are closing up they will often cut deals with you if you buy out some of their stuff.

Another good tip is to take a cooler in the car with an ice pack, so if you want to meander a while or have other errands to do, you can keep stuff cool. Then you don't have to carry everything you bought either while you continue to shop.

Another good tip is to ask the farmers what they grew themselves. Sometimes at farmers markets, they will do some "buy and sell", and I would rather buy the stuff they actually grew and got there fresh.

Farmers are also a good source of info about their produce, so it's good to take advantage of that knowledge and ask any questions while you're there.

I am absolutely in LOVE with farmers markets!

My tip would be to go early... you want to get first pick of the produce!
You might take a quick walk around the lot and scope out which organic farmer looks the best.

Then I usually choose two to go to. I walk up and with a big smile ask them what is the best and freshest thing they have today. I'll usually get some of that, and then enough lettuce and greens for the week. 1-2 bunches a day. You might ask what greens are mild and tender when eaten raw, or any question you have if you're uncertain what to choose.

Definitely bring cash, because they don't usually charge anything.

Get whatever looks good! Usually i can find out-of-this-world tomatoes, cucumbers, cherries, apricots, & lettuce at the market.

have fun!!!!

Hey...

Do they provide strong bags? lol. Seriously. I have never been and want to got to the Santa Monica Farmers Market next week here in LA. And if I do I know I will be buying alot of stuff, and since I dont drive, I will need some bags... lol!

Yes, they usually provide bags. But it's surely more environmental to bring your own!

My wife works the santa monica farmers market many times on Wed and Sat. She brings her Squad Car there to block off one of the side to make sure no one runs down people Like what happend a couple of years ago. When she is there she buys me all my greens and fruits that are all organic. You will love it there for sure. Doug in Calif living green and 100% Raw...  :)

Wow Thanks.

Thanks Doug, I was gonna look to see when the Market was in Santa Monica. But now I know.

So is there different things at each market? More on Sat? Or is it the same stuff each day primarily?
