I did want to add to the thread that after re-reading the instructions, I added some "chomping" moves to my typical swish and pull and found a pretty significant change in how much my digestion was affected....gurgling etc

Thanks Moncha Moncha and Judy. Your answers helped. Since I'm used to brushing as soon as I get up, I frequently forget that I have planned to oil pull (until after I have brushed or eaten). It seems easier for me to remember in the evenings. I did oil pull this morning. Guess I'll just put more effort into changing my routine so I can oil pull each morning. It does make my teeth feel smooth and clean.

Hi all,
I've been oil pulling with sesame oil for almost 2 full months now. 1-2 times a day. For the past two weeks, my gums have been bleeding like crazy whenever I brush or floss. And random sore spots keep popping up throughout. I think it's supposed to get worse before it gets better. And I'm a little excited to see the positive results. But how long should I expect these negative results? I'm not sure if I can go through 2 months of this stuff. People are discouraging me from continuing pulling, stating that it's obviously not helping. I'm supposed to go to the dentist for a cleaning but, I don't want to go in this worsened state and make it seem like I'm not taking care of my teeth. Should I go the dentist anyway? Has anyone experienced something similar?
Quajo,
Don't know if oil pulling has got to do with it, but you can stop for a while to see what kind of effect that has.
Couldn't it be detox symptoms due to raw foods? You know, like kind of a healing crisis (like you stated, becoming worse before getting better)?
What do you eat? Do you eat a lot of fruit? In that case, maybe you should cut down on fruits and uptake your green intake for a while (leafy greens, spirulina, sea weeds, stinging nettle tea etc.) until it settles, it could indicate a ph imbalance (mouth too acidic) due to a lack of magnesium and calcium. You could use ph strips to check.
If it persists, you could consult a(n alternative) doctor.
Not a complaint (although...), just an observation: I've been oil pulling daily (and sometimes more) for about a month now, but haven't noticed any dramatic effects. My gums do seem to have grown back a little, where they were receding, but that seems to be it (this could also have to do with my upped intake of greens). No whiter teeth or nothing. I use organic, cold pressed sesame oil, maybe I should try sunflower the next time.
For the time being, I'll keep on oil pulling, perhaps it's just a 'patience' thing, but if it doesn't do anything for me in the long run...
Anyone experiencing the same or does have any tips?

Thanks Judy! I think I will up my green intake and check my pH. I've added some oil of oregano to my sesame oil. I heard it helps with this problem. So far I think things are getting better. There's still bleeding, but much less. We'll see what happens.

I'm going to give my opinion on cutting down on fruit. I agree with adding more greens, as that is probably always a good thing. Just remember there are very little calories in greens. I don't agree with cutting down on fruit. Fruit is the only good source of calories on a raw diet. If you cut down on fruit you have to eat more fat to get enough calories. Eating too much fat will keep the sugar in the blood rather than let it get to the cells where it is needed. High blood sugar causes a lot of problems.

Hi judy, you may want to check in again about how long you are actually swishing....I noticed that if I don't watch the clock in the morning pull, I think I am pulling a long time but I am actually only going for about 10 min. If I go longer like when watching a movie or relaxing the results are way different. sometimes I even do to cycles up to thirty minutes and then I really notice better results.
Bumping this because it has lots of great information in it...
I have not been good about doing this regularly these days, but when I oil pull, I find that I get a lot of phlegm each time. It feels the same as going for a long run does in terms of what I'm getting rid of....
oilpulling.com has some info on how to it if anyone else is curious. :)

Did my first oil pulling today!! My teeth look so much whiter than they did yesterday..I am in shock. I started 100% raw yesterday, and this morning I woke up with a horrible horrible headache...while pulling the headache got even worse (so bad I thought I was gonna pass out ) After my time was up I spit and brushed, and I noticed that the horrid headache was GONE!!
I am used sesame seed oil...which is great cause I LOVE the taste of sesame seeds. Can't wait to see what else happens

I'm swishing for the first time RIGHT NOW! But to be honest, I was very hesitant to put that sesame oil in my mouth. I'm scared of what my side effects will be. Hopefully my teeth will go whiter along with the rest of the good stuff you guys have gotten out of it too!

And the answer is "YES", after i stopped my gums started slowly getting puffy and sore and they were very sensitive and i had problems chewing my food.
This lasted for about a week until i went back to oil pulling and now the puffiness has gone away and i can chew without pain.
I know know that oil pulling does work and i will continue to do it:D
It also has helped with mouth odor in the morning i've noticed:D i love spicy foods.

All I could find is ROASTED sesame oil. Is that right? I would assume that since this is RAW talk and all that it would need to be raw.. does such a thing exist?
I've just started doing this using raw cold-pressed sesame oil which I got at a health shop (I live in the UK). It's quite easy to find this here in health shops.
Oh I do so hope that the white teeth thing happens for me too!

I am on day five now of oil pulling. I missed a day in the middle was up early and could not deal with doing it that day so I just did it the next day. So far I think my teeth are a little whiter. I am using the refined sesame oil. I also have noted that I have excess mucus from my chest afterwards. I have been having more trouble with my asthma lately and so that makes sense. Anyway I can't wait to have perfectly white teeth and healthy gums like you all and hope for greater things in the health area. I will let you know. How is everyone else doing?
My niece (15 months) is holding onto my leg watching me oil pull, looking at me like 'what the heck are you doing with your mouth??' :p
Ha Ha Ha:p I just read this with oil swishing around in my mouth and laughed as I pictured what her face might have been like.:p Luckily I had a cup by the computer.

I'm in! I'd never heard of this before so I went to the website:oilpulling.com for more info. Thanks for the motivation!
I have only oil pulled twice. Once the other day and again just now. Both times the oil has turned white. I use rape seed oil. I will try this for a fortnight. Then I will change to sesame seed oil and see what happens. The first time, lots of bits came out in my mouth. So far, my teeth are still sensitive and they are not any whiter. my mouth feels clean though. I wonder if it works by the bacteria and things 'sticking' to the oil. (You know how hard it is to get oil off without some washing up liquid or something similar.) and then, you spit them all out. It makes sense as the skin under the tongue is very thin and that is how they dissolve pills under the tongue in an emergency isn't it. I don't know.

I've been doing it every morning since Nov. 1 (was hit and miss before that). Having gone to the dentist, who said that it probably would not change my dental pockets. Has anyone had a change in the periodontal bone loss? My teeth are definately whiter, though. Don't really like the swishing and usually only make it 10 minutes vs. the 15-20 that is recommended.

Ok, I am swishing as I type, and my jaw is killing me. I feel like some of it keeps escaping down the back of my throat but maybe it is just because I can taste it back there. It is kind of a weird feeling having a mouth full of sesame oil.
I took some pictures of my teeth before doing this experiment so I will see if there is any difference.
Even if this doesn't work out at least I have some sesame oil now to make snowdrops sesame chicken recipe! :p

Well I found this thread yesterday, and visited oilpulling.com last night. This morning I tried it when I got up, and it was not so bad! I swished for 15 minutes while I prepared my lunch and food for the day. It turned white.
I have a cavity so I'm hoping this will help. Pretty wild testimonies out there from swishing some oil around in your mouth!!! I'm pretty game for "weird" health stuff, as long as it doesn't involve dead animals :) so this seemed right up my alley.
What turns the oil white? Is it the enzymes in our saliva?

Didn't know where else to ask this....
I just got some coconut oil to give oil pulling a try. Coconut oil isn't really like an oil at all right? Not what I was expecting and I just wanted to make sure I got the right kind. It's probably the only kind of coconut oil.
Ok, thanks for any info.

Coconut oil is like a solid until it reaches about 72 degrees (i think thats the temperature).. then it becomes liquid. When I'm oil pulling with it -- I just put it in my mouth while it's in the 'solid form' and the heat from my mouth quickly melts the oil.
embarressingly -- the few times that it has been melted and liquid -- I spilt more on myself than I got into my mouth!! http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/blush_mini.gif

Since the coconut oil is white to begin with, is there any way to tell when you are done? Should I just go for 10-15 minutes?

it's white when it's solid - but when it liquifys.... it turns clear! Once it's in your mouth the oil is actually clear!!
So - when you've swished long enough the liquid coconut oil will turn white!

Hi all!
Excuse the lengthy post!
A while back I had posted about gums that would not stop bleeding. I was tempted to stop oil-pulling altogether. But as many of you suggested I kept with the oil-pulling and boy am I glad I did!
UPDATE: My gum disease is gone!:D :D
Here's my full story...Last August, I went to the dentist for the first time in over 5 years. I was really saddened to find out that, despite my rigorous brushing and flossing, I had early stage periodontal disease. :( :( My gums were an absolute mess...bleeding everywhere and they had started receding! She gave me some antibiotics and a fluoride rinse and sent me home. On my next visit, my gums weren't any better and she gave me some more antibiotics and sent me home.
I really didn't want to come back on my third visit with the same problem so, I started oil pulling for twenty minutes twice a day using cold pressed sesame seed oil back in April. In the first few weeks my teeth seemed to get a shade or two whiter so I kept on pulling hoping for the best. My morning breath was also a lot fresher (heeheehee).
From Bad to Worse...
In June, my gums were still bleeding. The bleeding actually started to get worse! When I brushed my teeth, the gums surrounding nearly every tooth would start bleeding and I started to get sensitive sore spots throughout my gums! I really was tempted to quit, but I decided to stick it through and hope that this was just my gums "purging" themselves.
In September, I had my 3-month dentist appointment scheduled but I decided not to go to give my gums a chance to heal a bit more and to allow the oil-pulling to do its thing. I started adding a few drops of Oil of Oregano to my sesame oil each day hoping the bleeding and the sores would stop...
From Worse to Excellent!
Ok so I continued the oil-pulling through September and October but I had started to slack off in November. By this time, the bleeding had stopped when I brushed and was really minimal when I flossed. So I decided to schedule my dentist appointment to see if she would notice any improvements.
Well, when the dentist started poking me with that annoying needle, she was very impressed at how my gums responded! She said there was much MUCH less bleeding than my last 2 visits and when she took my x-rays, my gums had stopped receded and appeared to be filling in again! I was super excited! In her words, "I have to say your tissue is in great condition!" (Oh yea baby!) She called another dentist in to check me out and she was also impressed. There was a vast improvement and I owe most of it to oil-pulling.
I say "most" because I do think the cleanings and the antibiotics helped me ward off infection. I'm not writing this to say stop going to the dentist. That's on you. If anything, I'm saying GO! It's important to know what state your teeth and gums are in. I would encourage doing routine cleanings at least twice a year to avoid this mess. However, oil-pulling is a very effective way to comabt ailing teeth and gums.
Alright ladies and gents, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

YES! That is an excellent testimony! Congratulations!
We ran out of sunflower oil and have been using coconut oil. It seems really different. With the sunflower oil, it started out very thick and smooth, then seemed to get (ummmm how to describe this?) like little tiny globs, like microfine cottage cheese? and then all of a sudden, it seemed very watery. That was usually at the 15 minute mark. With the coconut oil it doesn't do that at all. I don't notice a change in texture other than there being more saliva so it gets watered down. Anyone else notice this? I was thinking I'd switch back to the sunflower oil or buy sesame oil this time, since I don't know if coconut oil is recommended. I can't find a reference to it on the oilpulling.com site.

Glad it's back. One question, I've tried it about 4 times but the oil never seems to turn white...even after 20 minutes??? But my dh thinks my teeth look whiter.
I know this is WAY late but thought I'd share my experience. When I'm not thinking about it I tend to press my tongue to the top of my mouth to avoid the oil on most of my taste buds. When I do this the oil doesn't turn as white.
The oil turning white is a result of excess salivating. The saliva mixes with the oil and causes it to "turn white". I'm only guessing here but when I hide my taste buds from the oil it doesn't stimulate the salivation process the same way. This may also cause a reduction in the quality of detox the oil pulling is supposed to provide also.
Now I make a conscious effort to use my tongue in the oil pulling just as much as I use my cheeks and teeth. It seems to make a marked difference.

Hello! I am about to start oil pulling! Dh and I. We are excited!
I want to use either sunflower or sesame oil.
At our store I only found one option though.
Organic unrefined expeller pressed sesame oil.
Is that okay?
I know that on oilpulling.com it says to get either cold pressed or refined. Well...this is neither. But it's all I can get here in Alaska. Will it work?
Why does it need to be either cold pressed or refined only?

I read the oilpulling website, but I'm still confused. Does oil pulling give any other benefits besides in the mouth? How does it actually help dried skin? I'm assuming the oil is absorbed through the mouth tissues. How does it actually release toxins? I couldnt find a detailed explaination with medical terminology.
And why does the Dr. on the website say something about living 150 years by oil pulling when all this does it whiten teeth?
Please explain!
I haven't noticed any difference at all, so I am not doing it any more.
jrose... that's what I use, and it works great.
blix... Sounds smart! If it's not working, move on to something that does work for you! ;)
apower... I can't remember what the oil pulling site says, but I have been oil pulling somewhat faithfully for several months. The benefits I've had that I can think of off the top of my head: improved skin on my face, softer feet, super white teeth, very clean feeling mouth/teeth during the day, better gums, phlegm released. Because this somehow helps to pull whatever mucous I have up and out, I breath more deeply and have no blockage. Ever.
I can't say for sure how much of this is raw food and how much is oil pulling, but I can tell you that I detox a bit when I oil pull after I haven't in a few days. I actually feel muuuuuch better when I'm doing it regularly as well. :)

I have been off my prescription allergy medicine for over 2 weeks. I wake up congested, sometimes with sinus pain (as I always have) but then I do the oil pulling and it all goes away with no fuss. No more 3 hours of mad phlegm and snot and congestion until the Singulair kicked in. I was raw for about 6 weeks before starting the oil pulling, and didn't notice any difference in my allergies. I am going to keep doing it. I have worked it into my morning routine with ease. It took 2 weeks before I came off the medicine (ran out, didn't refill). So I've been doing it about a month I think.
I'm sure it is a combination of raw and oil pulling - one supports the other. My mom thinks it is the swishing motion clearing my sinuses. But why would I not be bothered by allergies for the rest of the day? It's very interesting, I think.

blix - we were using coconut oil, but I was concerned because it wasn't listed on oilpulling.com - have you read there? They only suggest 2 kinds - sesame or sunflower. Sometimes the Google ads that pop up in between the paragraphs for other oils are confusing.

avoid that stuff like it's the flu!
Canola oil is an industrial by-product not meant for human consumption.

Hey blix - flax is not one of the tried and true oils for oil pulling - you might want to consider using sesame or sunflower to give yourself a better chance of getting the results you are after this time.
Although, flax oil is wonderful for your body - you can use it in salad dressings and smoothies and not even notice it. it is full of the essential fatty acids your body needs.
Not to hijack the thread, but how were you making coconut butter out of the flax? I buy pure coconut oil (butter) from the hfs, there is nothing added to it. Just curious!

I tried the sharp tasting flax oil yesterday and the taste was so horrible, I spat it out. I have put the oil in my bottle of flax seed oil which I use for painting pictures. :p Sunflower oil it is then. I'll put it on my order today. The recipe for butter with flax seed oil is on goneraw.com It is under the heading of 'I can't believe it's not butter'. I first tried it with an old coconut, not knowing there was any other sort. But I believe the lady who posted the recipe must have used young coconuts and a better tasting flax oil than the one I originally bought. I really think it is worth a try.:)
Don't be too alarmed. I mean, it was already in your body... But maybe a good thing to do would be a quick salt water flush... 1 liter lukewarm water with 2 level teaspoons sea salt...
Even if you just do half of that, it couldn't hurt to flush it through.

i've read on the oilpulling.com website that if you swallow it, don't worry at all. your body will pass it. just don't make a habit of swallowing it is all.
no worries...

i doubt it. probably you were getting it before you started. as we are usually infected with dis-ease before it shows itself outwardly.
I think it *could* definitely be your body detoxing!!! I have found that when I haven't oil pulled for a couple weeks and then go back to it, I ALWAYS get something like an eye infection. It's the weirdest thing, I will also get a bit dizzy while pulling... then bam! The next day, after I OP again, I'm like a whole new woman! The redness in my eyes is gone and I feel better than ever...
I've heard of similar results from when people first start. It makes a lot of sense considering that OP brings out the toxins...
But you never know, maybe you would have gotten sick anyways. Who knows for sure.

Oh my god, what a thread!
I wanna read it all but there's so much!
Anyway, I'm so sold.
This is 100% new to me; never heard of it before. I have not-raw coconut oil which I use on my skin, is this ok to use or is raw better? Granted, raw is always better but you know, for this purpose will normal stuff suffice? Frankly, I'm gonna try it anyway cos my raw oil hasn't arrived yet.
Well, if this works for me, you guys, it will work for anyone, in respect of teeth whitening anyway.
I've been an avid coffee drinker and my teeth have always been stained due to an idiot dentist mix up when I was younger. It has always been an issue with me. I tend to smile less. Ick. Bring on the white teeth.
I have tried chemical whitening kits in the past with no joy whatsoever. So, fingers crossed!
Will update as soon as I can.
Over and out.
And thanks for the info!

Hi all,
I would love to try oil pulling but have a concern. I have two caps on my two top front teeth. My dentist did an EXCELLENT job in getting the color of the caps to look identical to the rest of my teeth. If i smile you can't even tell that I have caps. But she warned that i shouldn't do any teeth whitening programs, because the caps won't change color- just the rest of my teeth. Does anyone know the answer to this? I'll probably try to ask my dentist but she probably has no idea what oil pulling is?? I'd hate to miss out on all the wonderful and healing benefits I've read about. Okay, well thanks in advance.

how white are your teeth? if they are pretty white i'd do it anyway. if they are very yellow... i wouldn't.
how are you guys oil pulling w/ coconut oil? i ordered mine, & the oil is solid. do you just put a tbsp of the solid in your mouth & it melts immediately? then swish?
i'm currently using extra virgin olive oil.
Funny... I have some coconut oil in the cabinet. It was solid when it was colder in my house. Lately, I've gotten to be too much of a pansy and have put the heat on higher.
The oil is, well, oil now!
I LOVE to use it for moisturizer, but I've actually never tried it for oil pulling. I stick to the sesame 1-2 times every day... but I bet if you just put a bit of the coconut in your mouth, it would soften quickly with the heat of your mouth.
hehe. thanks eva! hm... i might forego trying to oil pull w/ it for now then. i want to use it as moisturizer instead. ;) when i first got the mail & opened the jar, i was in heaven! i love the smell so much!
so i'm using extra virgin olive oil instead. going to finish that off & check out the sesame. :Dw

I use organic, unrefined cold-pressed sunflower oil. I just started yesterday, I did it twice yesterday and I'm doing it right now for the first time in the day
What brand do you use? I haven't been able to find any unrefined Sunflower anywhere...I'm having to resort to Sesame which I can't stand the taste of :(

HI Everyone,
I had never heard of this oil pulling before, and it sounds very benificial. I would like to try it and am wondering if anyone out there has done it who has a dental implant?
One of my front teeth is an implant about 4 years old.
thanks!
Joy, I have a dental implant and have been oil pulling for several months 1-2 times per day. No problem whatsoever. :)

has anyone ever had any pieces of metal fillings coming out as a result of oil pulling?
this morning was only my third day of oil pulling and i had a small piece of some silver metal come out, which is odd because i was under the impression that all of my fillings were composite resin fillings.
i felt fine afterwards. my teeth don't hurt at all. in fact, i feel good that this came out, seems like i certainly didn't need it.

Just jumped on the bandwagon! Did my first OP just now while reading thru this thread. Might be my imagination, but I think my teeth are already a bit whiter :D
Question - what are you guys brushing with before and/or after your pulling? regular toothpaste? natural toothpaste? sea salt? just water?
So fascinated by this and can't wait to see the results!

I use Spectrum brand sunflower (http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=6#j225) oil. I also have used their (untoasted!) sesame oil, but it is much more expensive, I'd rather save it to flavor recipes with. This brand is very commonly found in healthfood stores, and I have seen it in broader-reaching grocery stores.
Here's a blurb taken from under "Precautions" on WWW.OILPULLING.COM:
(c) Sunflower and Sesame oil have been found to be equally effective in curing diseases. Other oils were not found to be as good. Do not blame oil pulling by practicing with other oils. Use refined oils.
Then also from the bottom of the page:
NOTE: The recommended oils to use are Sunflower Oil, Seasme Oil. We are receiving many emails about which oil to use. Our experience with thousands of people across the globe says USE COLD PRESSED OIL as first choice, if it is not available use REFINED OIL ( which seems to be effective in the process too). We have observed that any oil other than SUNFLOWER or SEASME may not be effective.
Edited to add this quote from the website as well:
...It consists of swishing cold-pressed oil in the mouth( Sunflower or Seasme, Pl. note you don't need to go for organic oils only, A normal refined sunflower oil bought from any supermarket proven to be effective in many people).

I usually rinse my mouth with water first before swishing. But I don't use toothpaste because I don't want it to interfere with the oil pulling. Maybe if your teeth feel really fuzzy when you get up you could use your brush without toothpaste?
We don't use commercial toothpaste, but we have quite a few different brands in the bathroom as well as baking soda. We all rotate!
:D My favorite is Eco-DenT Anise (http://www.eco-dent.com/ingr/ingr164014.cfm) flavor tooth powder.

I don't understand why it would say to use refined...I thought unrefined was better, in general???
yep. ditto. unrefined or refined... the information is kind of unclear to me.
well, today i popped in the extra virgin coconut oil & let it melt in my mouth. it wasn't too pleasant. :p i might want to arm myself with extra virgin olive oil instead which is funny, b/c i used to not be able to stand evoo. i feel my breath is fresher & gums bleed less, when i use it. i'm not sure about anything else though benefits or harm wise about oil pulling.
i have yet to use either the recommended oils.

I spent a week in LA and experienced considerable misery & congestion in my chest, nose and throat...hung around people who were smoking. Ugh. I began oil pulling 2 days ago and yesterday morning a big ole mucus ball came up. Today I'm breathing so clearly, I feel like I have a new pair of lungs!!! It has worked fast! Wow. I plan to continue doing this...just amazing.

I am particular over oils and am still waiting for mine to come in thru a catalog. But I told my mom all about it and she wanted to try it. She's been doing it a little over a week now and here's what she said:
My teeth are definitely whiter. I definitely lost a couple of pounds. My one tooth with the receding gum is noticeably less exposed. My mouth tastes clean all the time. My hair is less dry. I DON'T ITCH ALL OVER! My heels are definitely softer.
Cool testimonial!

I needed that post. I just noticed while oil pulling that mucus tend to come up, when I do. I'm not sure if that happened when I switched from olive oil to sunflower oil. At least, I know I'm not the only one with that going on. At first, I was going   .
Oh yeah. I just switched from Extra Virgin Olive Oil to Refined Sunflower Oil. Although I don't feel my mouth is as clean as with olive oil, it seems I'm pulling out phlegm with the sunflower oil. My hair seems better than normal. I don't use commercial shampoo... just ACV & baking soda. :D
I was wondering if any of you use this method for anything other then its dental bennefits? I did it for the first time this morning atfer much reading online about the process.
well, for now, i'm not sure what other benefits oil pulling gives me. maybe getting rid of toxins, too? i can't really tell.
other than that, yeah, i'm basically continuing it for the dental benefits. whiter teeth & fresher breath. oh yeah. :D
Thanks for your feedbak....I've read that it can aliviate all sorts of health problems. I did it again this morning....however having a really hard time fighting the urge to swallow. Not sure if its going to work out for me or not....I can only do it for a few min before I start to feeling like I'm going to swallow wether I like it or not.
Good luck in your quest for whiter teeth!:)
hehe. it's a fun quest. ;) i was camming the other day, & i blinded people w/ my teeth. oh yeah.
i think i read somewhere (EarthClinic most likely) for if you have the urge to swallow is to tilt your head forward while pulling for a while. :) also, what type of oil are you using? personally, i keep my head erect most of the time. i can stand olive oil (now i do. it was ick at first), coconut oil & sunflower oil.
i pulled while washing the dishes today but coughed. oil & saliva splattered all over. guess who had to wash the dishes again? ;)
Using sesame oil. Not that its bad taste or texture for that matter....just need to swallow. Nice mess that was I'm sure!
I'm bumping this thread for littlemarie because she is searching for the answer on how to get rid of her keritosis pilaris.

I recently returned to the board after a year's hiatus. When I read this thread last year I thought "no way". Now I am really, really intrigued and want to start this right away....yet I can't! I currently have my jaw wired. Even though I could get the oil in my mouth, I can't spit properly (or at all, really). I guess I'll have to wait another 4-5 weeks!
I tried to read this whole thread, but I only got to page 14 then skipped to the end.
For those of you who have been pulling long term (say 6 months or more) what changes have you noticed after the initial ones that you could probably pinpoint to the pulling alone?
Thanks!

Hurray for oil pulling! I use sesame, myself....
Regarding keratosis pilaris - I've seen a lot of people with this condition (as a massage therapist) and have used various body treatments, depending on the current dermal state of the client. Mainly exfoliation and acid peel works best, and frequent saunas following treatment (but not immediately after the treatment.) Sonya Dakar has a great product line that is all natural and it is a facial line designed for full body treatments called "Total Body Skin Fitness" treatment. With the entire SD treatment, is the first time I have seen keratosis pilaris disappear after one treatment.

I am so excited about experiencing the wonderful things I hear 'oil pulling' does!.
But when I tried 'oil pulling' for the first-time about 2 months back I guess with sesame oil (for about 5 minutes),a couple of hours later I started having a slight head-ache, my nose started itching, running a bit and my throat hurt too. The next morning I woke up alright.
I didn't 'oil pull' after that untill I tried again around a week back. I had almost the same effect again, woke up alright the next morning too. Could someone advise pls?.

It's detox. Drink a green smoothie so your bowels will help get rid of the toxins, drink lots of water, and rest as much as you need for healing!
If I have not oil pulled for some weeks, this happens to me, and then I feel better than ever within 12-24 hours. But it's been awhile. I typically oil pull 1-2 times per day. I usually end up having some mucus come up every time I do it, and then I am clearer than ever when I breathe (EVERY day).

Hey guys! This is so fascinating! You've inspired me to give this a go, and I've tried it a few times already and am so excited about it. Coupla questions for ya:
1) How long did it take you to start noticing the benefits?
2) The first thing I usually do in the morning is drink 1-2 large glasses of water (I always wake up parched). But I've read you shouldn't eat or drink before OP'ing. Is drinking water ok, or should I abstain until after?
3) While OP'ing, I find I need to hack up phlegm (recently quit smoking, so there's probably a lot of cleansing my lungs need to go through). I don't want to spit it out, though, 'cos I'm still swishing the oil... yet it feels gross to swish it all around for another 15 min. What do you think? Spit and start over? Or cope 'n deal?
Thanks!

SO COOL that you've quit smoking, I must say!...
As for the phlegm, it happens to me too but just a little bit. I just keep on swishing and spit it out at the end. I think the reason to not eat/drink before is so you don't end up throwing up!!! So I think the water's OK -- and actually I too often have water before oil pulling, no problem here. I think I got results within a few days the first time. Now, since I do it every day and don't break out anymore whether or not I OP, the big difference when I don't do it for awhile is how clear my sinuses get and my teeth feel SO clean!
i've been oil pullling for a while. recently though, i've had to adjust the amount from 1tbsp to 1/2 tsp, b/c my cheeks would be puffed out w/in a few mins. 1/2 tsp. of evoo seems to work for me so far.
my breath stays fresh for the whole day. beat that, commercial mouthwash! :p also, i find that OP is great for those who are fasting w/ intense foul breath.

I'm bumping this up along with two links. The first link is the best, in my opinion.
http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/oil_pulling.html#GLOWINGSKIN
http://www.oilpulling.com/
I do the oil pulling exactly as stated, on an empty stomach (first thing in the morning), gently swishing for a full 20 minutes. I use an organic unrefined sunflower oil that is cold pressed at a maximum of 104 degrees. (I have not found a sesame oil that is cold pressed at less than 140 degrees, plus sesame oil costs twice as much.) Immediately after spitting out the oil I brush my teeth and mouth with a blend of celtic sea salt and baking soda ground together finely. After that I drink 24oz of filtered water. (It should be noted that I only brush once or twice a day with the sea salt/baking soda. I'm thinking it is to abrasive for more than that??? The rest of the time, after meals and evenings I use a toothpaste made from coconut oil.)
It's been close to a month of doing this everyday. My gums feel better and I haven't seen any pink on my toothbrush. My teeth are not as transparent, especially the two front teeth which were very thin on the bottom edges because the backsides are chipped. I've been struggling with gum disease for almost 30 years, getting my teeth cleaned every 3 months. Because of the large fillings I had as a child almost all my back teeth are now crowned or bridged, and I have had several root canals. I'm due to have my teeth cleaned at the dentists office next month. Last time the hygenist asked what I had been doing to make my teeth stronger. My answer was a raw diet and lots of kale juice. This time, I'm hoping she will ask me the same thing again, and tell me my gum pockets have shrunk. I'll let you know.
An another apparent benefit has been my complexion. It keeps getting better. I'm oily skinned and at 54 years old I'm still prone to pimples and whiteheads, even on a raw diet. Yet, I haven't had any blemishes for almost 2 weeks. That's a miracle.
Many thanks to Eva for getting me started on oil pulling.

TRM,
Maybe a little, but I've only been doing it for about 2 weeks so far. I started doing 30 minutes, this past Monday, as opposed to 10 minutes.
One thing I have noticed is a gentle pulling out of toxins. Although it's hard to say if it's the OP because I am drinking detox tea too. I hope I'll be able to make a better accessment in a month's time.
I too am hoping this will help with receding gums and assist with some mercury removal.

I'm not sure what toxins being removed should feel like...not phlegmy or super dry...or bleeding gums....hmmm - please advise

LotsaRaw, I'm sure everyone has slightly different experiences with detox. My tongue felt slightly coated later on in the day, which is not usual for me... in the way it does when fasting. Also, got a few whiteheads and flakey skin, also unusual. Very mild detox stuff. I'm guessing that this was from the OP. Hope that helps.

Okay...just started....I am doing it right now with Napa Valley Naturals Organic Cold Pressed Unrefined Sesame Oil. Kinda tasty actually. I went to Whole Foods and only found one brand of cold pressed. Everything else was "expeller pressed". None of the Sunflower was cold pressed. How important is the cold pressed part of it? Also, has anyone figured out the significance of it being refined? Toxins being removed = feeling more "clean" after a brief bout of red eyes, headache, tiredness, pimples. If I don't oil pull for a few days, then do it, I get red eyes or a small headache for a few hours after, then feel fantastic. So strange. But it's been awhile since I've not OP'd.

Anything you do to cleanse your body, to strengthen your mind and willpower, or to free your spirit... anything you do for YOU, is worth doing. You will not have as many benefits from 3x a week, but you will not have ANY benefits to 0x a week. So if 3x is what you can do... 3x is splendid!

YES, it is the first thing I do in the morning, and I really do feel like it almost centers me and clears my mind. LOL, helps that I have to keep my mouth shut when I'm doing it!! It really is a sacred routine in my life. I've even done it for as much as a couple hours if I have a lot of writing or cleaning to do and am not yet hungry. And my teeth DEFINITELY are cleaner and whiter from doing it! I have even switched to just a bit of baking soda, and my teeth are bright white (were yellowish but not bad before, just enough for me to notice when I looked in the mirror.)

I have been pulling for a couple of days now and decided to check something out yesterday. After swishing 1 Tbsp for 20 minutes, I wanted to see how much volume of liquid there was post-swishing. It was 1 Tbsp. As one is adding saliva as you swish, I would think the volume would increase. However, as people have reported skin enhancements, I am thinking that some of the oil is absorbed. I haven't seen any skin enhancements as of yet, but I eat nuts and seeds a few times a week and think I probably get plenty of oils that way. Maybe those that are seeing the skin benefits aren't getting enough oil in their diet and are getting oil from absorbing through the pulling.....
What do you think?

11-12-2008, 12:22 PM
Hmmm. I'm not saying that's a bad theory, but it's not true my case. I get a variety of plant fats in my diet, and I use 2-4 T. of a truly cold pressed olive oil in salad dressing almost every day.
Since I'm drinking 24-32 oz of water after OP, I've been wondering if my skin is benefiting from the increase in water consumption, too.
I should note that I have not been blemish free since my last post. I had to travel and didn't get to OP for 3 days. I broke out in several spots on one side of my face. Stress could be a factor, too. Overall, I'm still convinced it has helped reduce break-outs and improve the texture of my skin.

Hmmm. I'm not saying that's a bad theory, but it's not true my case. I get a variety of plant fats in my diet, and I use 2-4 T. of a truly cold pressed olive oil in salad dressing almost every day.
Thanks for the feedback RK! Did you have cracked skin?
Also, I read that you found cold pressed Sunflower Oil. What brand is that and where did you find it?

No cracks right now. I have had in the past, especially on feet, fingers, and lips. I use shea butter for that. My skin couldn't crack if it wanted to, I use Face Potion #19 from Bella di Terra, twice a day, and every night I slather on lotion or body butter from the same company.
My favorite brand of oils is Rapunzel. PCC Grocer is the only place I've seen them. They are organic, cold pressed, unrefined. Bottled in France. Distributed by Organic Brands, LLC.

I've noticed everytime I OP I get small cracks in each corner of my mouth. When I missed two days they went away. As soon as I resumed the OP they came back. They are not a big deal, but I'd like to know if this happens to anyone else. It's an odd detox symptom I suppose.
Raw Knitster, I use Rapunzle too, sesame.

i'm so glad i saw this post today, because it reminded me that i've wanted to try this out. i oil pulled twice today, once this morning and one just now. i used olive oil. my teeth are seriously a few SHADES whiter... also patches of dry skin i've had on my face for a couple weeks are clearing up and my skin is softer. can't wait to see how i'm doing in a week or two. :)

I also tried this for the first time today. In the am I did not want to use my good expensive oil so I used my raw coconut oil. In the afternoon I went to the store and bought sesame oil. I got a headache after each time but my mouth felt so wonderfully clean so I will keep trying. I wonder if this will help with tooth sensitivity as well??

My last post on this thread was 6 weeks ago. I've been oil pulling faithfully every morning for over 2 months. I've skipped very few days. It feels odd not to do it every day. My teeth are not noticably whiter, but they never were white. I'm going to try a bottle of sesame seed oil to see if I notice any whitening with that. What I have noticed is that a small filling on a front tooth is no longer flush with the tooth. The tooth enamel around it is obviously thicker. I've also tried several new toothpastes since my last post, PerioBrite, Uncle Harry's, and more. I finally found one I like, CoralWhite, and have been using it almost exclusively for a month. It has no fluroide, SLS, or glycerin.
I went to the dentist for a cleaning this week. For the first time ever there was NO bleeding of the gums, not even around the teeth with the deepest pockets. The hygenist was amazed. She wanted to know where I found my new toothpaste.
You know that "Hmmmm" sound some people make when they are pleasantly surprised and wondering about something they see or hear that is out of the ordinairy? The hygenist made that sound several times during my cleaning. Then the dentist made the same sound when he read the hygenist's chart notes, and again when he examined my teeth. I think they were more amazed than they cared to admit.
I didn't tell them about the oil pulling. Call me chicken. If things are still looking better at my next cleaning, I will tell them my secret.
RawKnitster! I'm OPing now... Chicken! LOL -- I hope you tell them next time! Of course, they're probably not going to tell people about it anyways. Sigh. That's the way it usually works in my experience. They still have their schooling ingrained deep down...
But that is GREAT!

I opened the bottle of sesame seed oil and tried it this morning. It was a nice change from the sunflower seed oil. It says to refrigherate after opening, but that makes it thicken. I'd have to leave my morning dose out the night before, which would be a nuisance. I'm wondering how important it is to keep the bottle in the fridge.
If your using sesame seed oil.......How do you store it?

I've only used sesame, and I leave it out at room temp. I have not had any problems with freshness that I can tell. :)

I have been using seasame oil twice a day- have not really noticed a great difference in whiteness yet but do notice a huge difference in my gums. When I used to floss before I would have slight bleeding - I have been pulling since just before Thanksgiving and there is no more bleeding when I floss!

SOOOO glad I found this post on the same day I discovered the miracle that is oil pulling!
Picked up some cold-pressed sesame oil and olive oil soap from the health food store and did my fist OP this morning. (Who knew you could brush your teeth with SOAP?? :)
It's 4.30 and I just finished my second one for today. And WOW!
I totally know what you guys mean about the whitening effect.
OP is nowhere near as nasty as people are afraid it will be. I actually find the taste quite nice, but then I'm on day 5 of my cleanse and any non-lemonade taste is a welcome change :D
Looking forward to the look on my boyfriend's face when he sees the big bastard block of soap next to the bathroom sink and I'll have to tell him "Don't wash your hands with that, it's for my teeth!" LOL
Is anyone else using olive oil toothpaste after they pull?

Same here. Major improvement of bleeding gums, but NO whitening.
The enamel appeared to be thickening, but after a couple months of daily OP it became very noticable that my teeth were turning the color of the oil. I have several crowns so it's easy to see any change in my natural tooth color. The only reason I can figure is my teeth must be softer or more porous than normal.
I've switched to sesame oil, instead of sunflower, and cut back on the OP. Only doing it once or twice a week now.
I'm working on strengthening my teeth from the inside out. Lots of green food and almond milk!
I went in for my check-up today. It's been a year since I've gone in (lots of health drama stretching throughout family and friends), and the dentist wanted to repair two cavities in an area between two molars. I had fabulous teeth until my asthma kicked in again with a major vengeance, and the Prednisone and inhalers took their toll. Ugh. Anyway, I just started oil pulling a few days ago and told my dentist that I was not going to come in any time soon to have the "repair" made -- I'd wait until the end of the semester. This is someone I've known for decades. He was none too pleased and became very abrupt. I told the hygienist (whom I adore) about oil pulling, and she said that enamel couldn't heal itself. Now wait just a sec -- these are the same two spots that were mentioned a year ago and they have barely deteriorated without raw food -- can't wait to see what happens when the green smoothies seriously kick in! Anyway, I'm NOT going to do anything until May, and I fully expect my return visit to bear witness to the cavities filling in naturally. It was just a frustrating experience.

Hi There!
I found this very interesting....
As I was reading this thread while swishing the oil in my mouth and through my teeth, someone said it was as if the oil were making music in their mouth!
This was SO my experience!
But what was even stranger than the music, is the fact that it just STOPPED at around twenty minutes!! All of the sudden it was GONE!!!
This is the first time I have used sunflower oil, and I really liked it! It was white unlike the other times I have tried, and my teeth too seemed just a hair whiter at the end.
More music in my mouth tomorrow morning!

It was very helpful to me. Another recommended site is www.oilpulling.com. Basically, OP is a way for your body to detoxify through drawing out the toxins via the mixing of oil (sunflower, sesame, coconut, and so on -- most people use the "good stuff," such as organic or extra virgin) and saliva. It is recommended only on an empty stomach -- another site gave an example of someone vomiting quite violently when she OP'd immediately after a meal. An individual "swishes" for fifteen to twenty minutes and then spits out the saliva/oil (seeing as it contains toxins, it's very important not to swallow the mixture). If the oil is white, having been thinned out by the saliva, it's considered a good OP session. The mouth is then rinsed and, if using a sink as a receptacle, the sink is then washed. (Some people brush their teeth, some rinse with salt water, some rinse with tap water . . . I think it can be personalized a bit.)
I've been practicing OP for three times a day for a whopping four days and my teeth are already whiter and I've been experiencing some nasty knee pains. The latter is important because it's an old injury (when I overshot a safe amount of weights to lift), and either transitioning into raw foods or OP or both has brought it up again. This is a sign of healing, rather than injury *from* the OP. To be honest, many people are deeming the practice a miracle. I'm hoping it's just that! :D

Question Question about oil pulling
Under your tongue is one of the best places to absorb vit+min.. wouldn't you been absorbing this oil into your body? Won't you be absorbing the oil and then the toxins that the oil is pulling out?
Why not just swish around a little water and chlorella in your mouth?
Swishing right now. This is my 2nd time in two days. Yesterday I tried sesame oil, though I currently have coconut oil in my mouth. I didn't feel much of anything with yesterday's oil pull, plus I didn't enjoy the texture/taste. It is a little more bearable with the coconut oil. I'll keep it up for a bit...
Good thread.

No more than you would be absorbing the toxins through a bowel movement. It has to be somewhere before it leaves the body. I do often feel a mini detox with OPing, but I feel fantastic soon after. If I OP every day and stay 100% raw, I do not feel much of anything but keep OPing because it helps to maintain my level of health.
Does that help?

Day 2 and just about to do my 3rd OP before I head off to bed.
Both on my morning and afternoon OPs I nearly had to abort them before the 20 minutes were up because a TON of phlegm started to creep up my throat (like just before you're about to cough and hack something up). Fortunately I made it through both and did my best to get most of the mucous up.
I don't smoke nor do I have a cold so SOMETHING's happening :)

Way to go, harbour! I don't smoke, either, and have experienced something similar with phlegm rising up in my throat during OP. Amazing how our bodies work so well when we encourage them to do so!!! :)

Well sort of, I understand what you are saying yes. I'm just having a hard time understanding how the oil is actually pulling out the toxins. Does anyone have any articles that get really specific on HOW this happens, I can't seem to find anything yet..
I'm readings lots here where people are benefiting from OPing, my gums are always cut up and sensitive so I would definitely like to start OPing just for that reason. Also being a coffee consumer ANYTHING to whiten my teeth naturally I'm in! :D

Hmpfh! I did swish the oil for 15 mins this morning, but when i spat it ot i thought of somehting. Of vinaigrette, to be exact.
I recalled how i once blended parsley and oil to make something pesto-ish, and added a little water to make it blend better. And what happened? The pesto turned all white-ish.
So i did a little test, and whisked a small amount of oil with a little water, and indeed, it whitened,
So the oil getting white has to be that it's mixed with saliva, and not toxins at all. What do you think?
LilacLavender
07-01-2009, 10:38 AM
that's generally what I guessed was happening. I don't see enough scientific backing for the idea to give it the suggested 2 month time investment that would be potentially required for results.
So the oil getting white has to be that it's mixed with saliva, and not toxins at all. What do you think?
The oil usually does not turn white for me anymore. It only turns white when I have had a few days without oil pulling or have a non-raw meal. When I oil pull every day (often twice daily), and am sticking to 100%ish raw, it does NOT turn white. This is even with a range of times being from 20 minutes all the way up to oil pulling for a whole hour.
I can't explain the whole dynamic, but I can tell you for certain that something is happening that is good. After more than 2 years of regular green smoothies and oil pulling, I equate them both with my health. I do not feel as good without my greens or without oil pulling. I still feel good, but there is a feeling of lightness right after oil pulling.... and a feeling of lightness about hmmm an hour after a green smoothie. ;)
Sorry that none of that is scientific. Sometimes we humans have not conducted the experiments required to quantify these things. And frankly -- until oil pulling starts making a pharmaceutical company some money, it likely won't happen.

To keep it short and sweet,
just letting everyone who is looking to get into oil pulling...
IT WORKS.
Cold pressed sesame oil I use. And it prevented me from having to get my tooth pulled out ! (cavities, very painful toothache, worst pain of my life)
and also cured my eczema behind my knee I've had for most of my life.
Skin is SOOOO much softer, on the body, and on the face.
My sun tan's are more golden now. Dark circles gone. Kinda more energy. (my heart sometimes rushes with energy while I'm swishing the oil around.)
Morning breath 90% gone (10% probably b.c I haven't been 100% raw)
I also think green juice/wheatgrass along with oil pulling will give dramatic health results and cure just about anything internally. I've been pulling for about 6 months now, and will never stop.
Start pulling today, thank the universe for this knowledge, and spread it to strangers and loved ones! Raw or not!

I just started oil pulling with coconut oil. I made it twenty minutes my first time! I was amazed at how white the oil was and how clean my mouth felt after doing it. I am going to commit to this for a few weeks to see if there are any positive changes. All the testimonials on this thread make me very eager to continue.

Another testimonial....
Even though I had good results with oil pulling for my gums and complexion I wasn't convinced and and stopped doing it for several months. The next teeth cleaning my gums bleed again. The past couple weeks my skin started breaking out again, lots of pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. I started oil pulling again using sesame oil. Within 5 days my complexion had cleared up.
I'm convinced. No amount of skeptism from my dentist or anyone else is going to make me doubt what I'm doing is beneficial. I'm an oil puller. :)
I would like to note that oil pulling did not make my teeth whiter. In fact that was another part of the reason I stopped doing it. My teeth have always had thin enamel, been dull yellow, and oil pulling made the yellow worse. It was like my teeth were absorbing the color of the oil. I have solved that issue my doing a 10 minute rinse with half water/half hydrogen peroxide after I oil pull and brush. I read that somewhere while doing google on oil pulling. The writer suggested doing it for removing any toxins that linger after brushing, but it also works to brighten teeth.
Update: I dropped the hydrogen peroxide from the program. I got sloppy and didn't add enough water to it and OUCH! My entire mouth erupted in sores that were extremely painful for a week. Not taking any more chances with it. If I want to use HP for brightening once in a while then I will carefully measure the water/hydrogen in equal amounts.

I told an herbalist/aromatherapist that is helping me with some other issues that I was doing oil pulling. She was intrigued and took some how to notes. She suggested adding some essential oils.
Specifially, one drop of tea tree oil and one drop of lavender oil to a Tablespoon of the oil I'm pulling with. I've tried it for the past two days. I LIKE IT! She also suggested adding a drop of myrrh if dealing with any tooth infections.

Fun Fun!!
I did my first oil pulling session as I read through these posts.
I could only keep it up for 5 minutes to start.
So, I used 1 tablespoon or organic olive oil(all i have on hand right now) kept it in the front of my mouth and swished. Of course you have to swallow saliva, but not the oil.
Am I doing it correctly?

I swish it around all my teeth, and don't swallow ANYTHING for the entire 20-30 minutes. I love olive oil on my salads, but don't think I could keep it in my mouth either. It is a bit stronger oil. You might want to try it with unrefined sesame or sunflower oil. Spectrum makes a sesame oil that is unrefined and doesn't have a strong sesame flavor.
Kudos to you for jumping in and giving it a try. It gets easier. :)

I am going to buy a differnet oil this evening.
OK----how can you not swallow anything for so long????
Am I ruining it my swallowing, as in taking in toxins.
I can not imagine not swallowing for more than a minute.
Terry
Hi Terry,
I find that I sometimes needs to swallow too... and I hope what I'm doing is okay. (If not, someone please tell me!) I just keep the oil in the front of my mouth and try not to swallow it, while I swallow a little in the back of my throat to keep myself from gagging. I can't go longer than a few minutes without swallowing myself. Though I have built up from only being able to do 5 minutes to now doing 20 minutes. I also think that the more "stuff" you have to drain, the harder it is to not swallow. So by this rational, the cleaner your system gets, the easier it gets to oil pull.
I dunno.
RawKnitster
11-05-2009, 02:40 PM
I'm not sure how I don't swallow for that long. Sometimes it is even longer. If I'm busy puttering around the house or on the computer while I'm swishing time flies by and I don't even notice. I'm sure my saliva is being incorportated with the oil as I swish, because I spit out more than goes in.
As I understand it the oil swishing is churning up the bacteria hiding in our gums and you don't want to swallow it. I would guess it is better to spit it out and build up your tolerance gradually than swallow it.
Eva, our oil pulling expert is busy these days with her raw business. Maybe she will pop in and answer your questions. I would trust her knowledge on oil pulling more than mine. :)

I use coconut oil and it is solid when I scoop it out of the jar, but it quickly melts in my mouth and becomes swishable. Swishing right now, actually... and trying not to swallow! It's tough this morning...

After reading about this over the last year and not quite having the nerve to do this, I finally summoned up the nerve, with coconut oil. Today was Day 3, with two teaspoons of the coconut oil(the first day I just stuck a toe in with only one teaspoon). Hopefully I will be doing the full tablespoon very soon here. The holding of the oil and swishing it around wasn't anywhere nearly as bad as I thought it would be, and the 20 minutes went by really quickly. The trick is to do this while doing some other routine morning stuff like getting some food ready, early morning time on the computer, domestic detail. Before you know it, that 20 minutes is up! Anyhow, just now, I thought I noticed that my teeth looked just a tad whiter, which is a real miracle as I tend to have teeth that are ivory-toned anyway and I'm older with some graying of the teeth on account of that. I hadn't expected something like the lightening to start to show up THIS soon. Can't wait to see what other benefits show up in my case. Anything that helps gum health is really a plus as I've had trouble in the past. Will need to see the dentist within the reasonable future for cleaning anyway.
 I'd never heard of oil pulling. One of the posts from 2007 suggested going to http://www.oilpulling.com so I did.
Quite interesting and really worth going to 'cause it answers so many questions. For example, apparently cold-pressed sunflower or sesame are the best oils to use. If you can't find cold-pressed next in line is refined sunflower or sesame. They do push these two oils, but also state the actual brand does not matter.
Also, in answer to another question here, if you have allergies to sunflower then try sesame, and vice-versa. Only then do they recommend trying to find another oil.
Also, it was suggested that if you feel the need to swallow, spit the oil out and take a new spoonful as swallowing apparently does reintroduce the toxins to your body.
When oil pulling, we're also told to remember that some acute problems may disappear within a few days/weeks, but some chronic problems may take up to a year. Makes sense 'cause the chronic stuff has been hanging onto our bodies for years.
Anyhow, I'm not sure I'm ready to try this. I love oil on my salads but swishing in my mouth is another thing. I'm afraid I'll gag. (I think it may have something to do with growing up in the 50's and having to take an actual spoon of cod-liver oil every day in the winter, there was no such thing as capsules ..... uggg ).
Please visit that site, I think it'll really help answer your questions. It also has some videos on how to do it, personal experiences and other neat stuff.
I'm having some serious medical problems so I really am open to oil pulling, but am I actually ready to do it... not yet.
I'll be revisiting this site just to see how you're all doing with it and what your experiences are. I wish you all the best on your journey to true health.

Just started couple days ago, really like it. Its clearing up my sinuses really well in the morning. Couple questions,
Does this replace brushing?
Would rinsing with celtic sea salt instead of a diluted hydrogen peroxide work as well?

I was really afraid I'd gag too, but with the coconut oil it's been fine! That first day I tiptoed in with just a teaspoon full, but by my 3rd day I was up to the full tablespoon - I'm using coconut oil as there are so many benefits of coconut oil that it sure couldn't hurt to oil pull with this. I'm on Day 8, and my Florida friend is a week ahead of me.
As far as replacing brushing, I don't think so. Actually, after rinsing out the mouth after one's oil-pulling session, one is supposed to brush the teeth, and drink at least a glass of water.
So far, although this is only a few days in, I swear my teeth are looking a teeny bit brighter!

Aside from thinking my teeth look a teeny, teeny bit whiter, I haven't noticed anything different yet from nearly 3 weeks of faithfully oil-pulling. I did have a little bit of a skin breakout in the 2nd week, but that's gone now. Does it simply take longer, like many months, for some people to notice the benefits? Now, with green smoothies, I could feel a difference after just two days, so it's not like I don't have a responsive system. How long was it for people here before they noticed a difference, and what? Just curious, and feeling a little discouraged today.
RawKnitster
11-22-2009, 03:38 PM
In my case, I don't see any difference in tooth whiteness. The real benefit I get is that my gums are not sore and do not bleed when I floss. (I have had a problem for 30 years with receding gums and still have a few teeth surrounded by deep pockets.) Oil pulling reduces bacterial growth in the areas that a toothbrush can't reach.
The other benefit I experience is a clear complexion. Not sure why that is. I've read it could be less bacteria in the mouth and/or the face/skin is directly absorbing some of the nutrients in the oil.
As for how long it took to notice a difference. I wasn't convinced there was a difference so I stopped and restarted oil pulling several times. After many months and several cleanings at the dentist's office I'm convinced oil pulling makes a huge difference for me. If you already have healthy gums will it make a difference for you? I can't say.
If you are discouraged I would suggest stop looking for results. Simply let oil pulling be part of your daily routine, as natural as brushing and flossing. :)

Like you I have gum issues so I hope those will improve with this along with my already good dental hygiene habits. I guess I was just looking for something visible after so many glowing reports. However I know everybody is different, and it's best to be patient anyway. Quite likely, just like eating a raw diet, it's working in internal ways I don't notice yet. Again, thanks!

I've never done oil pulling, but I think I'll give it a try. I'm skeptical, but it can't hurt, and will probably help to freshen the breath, right?
I have some old olive oil that I don't know what to do with. It's not terribly rancid, but not really fresh either. It seems ideal to me. Do you guys think it would be okay to use instead of sunflower?

I've never tried it with olive oil, but I think I read from others who have. I'm using sesame oil these day. Sunflower oil is cheaper, but I like the lack of flavor in Spectrum Organic Unrefined Sesame Oil.
If you try it with the olive oil let us know how it goes.

I searched Curezone and here is what I found (had to shorten the URL, the original was way too long:
http://tinyurl.com/oilpullTMJ (http://tinyurl.com/oilpullTMJ)
hey everyone,
ive been oil pulling everyday now (in the beginning for about a week, 3x a day, and now, 1-2x a day) for about 1 month (or maybe more?) now and i cant say ive actually noticed any benefits.
my teeth have not become whiter, and i dont think my skin has improved either. i wake up every morning with a gross taste in my mouth/bad breath that i havent always had (though this could be attributed to some bad teeth ive got since becoming raw, which i dont understand, which is a whole other stody). my teeth problems have not improved.
i do find it brings up phelgm etc afterward but id say swishing with anything in ur mouth for 20 mins would prbably do that.
ive been using coconut oil but am now switching to sesame to see if i notice any changes.
has anyone else had this experience?
:(

How did I miss this???? I LOVE oil pulling!!! It relieves any teeth pain I get from citrus and makes me feel so refreshed. I'm going to read this thread and see what the Challenge is. :D
Flea: Sesame Oil or Sunflower Oil are the recommended oils. I have personally never heard a success story from oil pulling with Coconut oil... switch your oils. Also:
* Are you doing it in the morning on an EMPTY STOMACH prior to eating breakfast?
* Are you swishing for at least 15-30 minutes?
* Have you researched it a bit to make sure you're doing it properly? Try oilpulling.com or read this. (http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-32486-Tucson-Raw-Food-Examiner~y2010m1d8-Reducing-Teeth-Sensitivity-the-Vegan-Way)
hey green woman,
thanks for your help.
i have just switched to sesame and will start using that. its funny, ive heard great responses from heaps of people using coconut oil, and i thought as its anti bacterial it would be particu7larly good for teeth..
and yep, i am doing it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for about 30 mins, sometimes longer (i often do it later in the day and at night too, its less beneficial after uve eaten, but still worth doing right?)
i have a question - i just bought some sunflower oil cos it was extremely cheap - is there anything wrong with switching oils? i.e. 2 weeks on sesame then 3 weeks on sunflower etc? or is it better to stick to one oil?
thanks everyone,
flea

Does the sesame oil have to be "extra virgin"?
Also, I thought 20 minutes was the max amount of time for pulling; could I be benefitting from doing it longer?

Thinking this is another one of those hidden bits of wisdom that are out there.
We have a Spectrum High Heat Safflower Oil Expeller Pressed. It's not cold pressed but its here, and I didn't have to pay for it... so why not?
In October I went to see a dentist, hadn't seen one for 2 years and not suprisingly I had some trouble spots. (unlike many of you, while I'm not on a SAD diet, I'm not vegan or raw... yet) Multiple cavities, with multiple looking like they were going to need root canals.
No nerve pain because they hadn't yet hit the nerve... but in the process of removing one, it opened to the nerve (has to clean little bit more than just the cavity so they can fill it right and have it 'bond') so, yay... root canal.
The other ones were so close on the x-rays that when I told him I wanted to try healing the rest of them, he gave me 2 thumbs up for it (dentist was of oriental descent, familiar with eastern medicine). Since they weren't at the root, it made no sense to treat them now and then have root canals done on perfectly healthy roots.
I started brushing (and flossing for the first time in my life) daily using Christophers Herbal Tooth Powder (great stuff) which is probably why it hadn't gotten to the nerves in the first place as I had started using it in August. Since then I've had no nerve pain and I expect that if I got new x-rays, the cavities would either be gone or at least not progressing.
*Side note, also received blessing from priesthood holders of my church which I feel contributes immensly but others would discount*
Still, with what I've read on oilpulling so far, this, if the cavities are still there, will help immensly over time in the removal of those toxins from my teeth.
I'll keep others posted on what I do experience =)

No, not extra virgin. Look for sesame oil that is "unrefined and organic".
I almost always do it longer because it has become automatic to do while I'm puttering around the house (or on the computer). I simply lose track of time, or don't want to stop what I'm doing to brush. I'm not the only one. I think Eva has written that she does it longer than 20 minutes. I really can't answer the question about added benefits from doing it longer. Don't know.

So this morning I oilpulled... very interesting experience. First, the oil was so thick that I was wondering just what was going on as i had read that over time it becomes thick... starts that way too!
Eventually it became more liquidy and then over time expanded to fill more of my mouth (siliva added). I checked though, and it was white only after 5-10 minutes for me.
Was having difficulty not swallowing so to occupy my mind, I made a smoothy for breakfast
Experiment #1
2 c. Almond Milk (1:4 ratio water/nuts with some Agave to taste)
1/4 c. Almond Pulp (frozen it,had to take a screwdriver/hammer to the thing!)
1 Bannana
20-30 small blueberries (didn't measure, maybe 3/4 cup?)
1 Green Apple (precut and frozen)
My sister (age 9) says it was great (I liked it too)! Now she tells me we should get wine glasses, pour it into them and drink out of those (she's really cute!). Then she says we should take pictures of them too. My sister is my support =). Any time I make something healthy, she's always the first to try it and tell me how nice it tastes. My step-mother appreciates it because somehow, she'll eat my things but be picky about other things even if they're healthy.
We'll see how oil pulling goes going forward!

Hi!! *waves hello* I almost always do it for longer... sometimes as much as an hour and a half. Just depends on my schedule. Often I begin working on program info or classes while oil pulling, so it's no big deal.
I know that the longer I do it, the more "cleared up" I feel afterwards. I *never* have any phlegm, which I am sure is a direct result of oil pulling. It comes back when I don't do it for several days.
Also, I have noticed, that when I oil pull for longer, the color of what I spit out is more likely to become white. I have read that has something to do with bacteria, but I don't remember the exact details or know if what I read was credible.
Just had a private client the other day who mentioned oil pulling to me, not knowing I've been doing it for almost 3 years now. She said her holistic doctor told her to do it for a health problem, which did go away as a result of the oil pulling. :)
hey guys,
i have now moved onto organic cold pressed sesame oil and feel like i am getting mroe results from it than the coconut oil (teeth a little bit whiter perhaps, but also maybe all in my mind) which is cool. i do it once a day for about 30-40 mins, though i do find that even sometimes after 40 mins its still yellow when i spit it out. whats the deal with that? am i not swishing hardcore enough?
also, when i spit it out, and also just generally, my tongue is still covered in eww..its never just pink like a dogs.
does anyone here put coconut oil directly on their teeth, just with their fingers, for whitening and anti bacterial effects etc?
thanks kids!

While I don't put coconut oil on my teeth with my fingers, I do brush with it 1-2 times per day. I keep a little glass container of C.O. in my medicine cabinet just for brushing.
I'm one of those that sees visible results after brushing or oil pulling using C.O.
But to be honest - I've never tried sesame oil, so cannot compare it to that. I have used olive oil and didn't care for it. *Ü*

Thank you Eva! This is exactly what I wanted to know. My allergies (post nasal drip, etc) are still bothering me but I have only been pulling for about a week with the sesame oil. I was worried about doing it for longer than 30 minutes but now I will give it a try.

I am glad to know of this treatment! I plan to try it.
Please excuse this non sequitor, here, but flea above mentioned in passing that he has developed bad breath since becoming raw. From what I read it appears you have recently transitioned to raw. I am supposing your body continued to purge toxins, and a natural symptom of that condition is bad breath. When my mother underwent a 21 day detox she suffered the same.
But what did you mean by bad teeth? How do you attribute it to going raw?

I see whiter teeth right away the first time. My tongue was so bright pink and clean!

I use coconut oil for everything. I love it. I brush with it and have it be the last thing on my teeth at night.

I have been wanting to try oil pulling sooo badly, but I have braces....Thinking I'll wait until I get my braces off in a few months. I have this strange fear that maybe the oil will rust the braces or cause them to break? Any one ever oil pull with dental appliances?

Oil is generally used to prevent rust and not to cause it. Try it and see how it feels.
I think that it would be good and may even clean parts of your appliance that your toothbrush is not getting to.

My previous testimony has been about the benefits of oil pulling. Not so with this post. Long term oil pulling was not beneficial for the particular condition of my gums.
I had two bad dental checkups in the past year that I've been oil pulling. The depth levels of the pockets in my gums has been holding at a level of 3 for 20 years. After a year of oil pulling the levels are at 5 & 6. I haven't changed anything in my routine except adding the oil pulling. I can only conclude that oil pulling was wrong, possibly even harmful for me.
I had to have a deep cleaning (root planing) done to clean out the pockets. Now that the gum pockets have been cleared out, there is a chance they can tighten up again. I'm no longer inclined to think oil pulling is the answer for that. Since the root planing I've been using water to swish with, mixed with a few drops of a blend of essentail oils that includes eucalyptus, thyme, peppermint, oregano, clove, and wintergreen. My gums are feeling great, tight and pink with no more bleeding spots.
I'm sorry to be negative here, but I felt it was important to correct my record of testimony.
As for my breaking out each time I stopped oil pulling... that has not happened this time.
Oil pulling is obviously wonderful medicine for many people, just not me.

Well, I am very glad I found this thread. I tried the oil pulling tonight for the first time, and I am already having a bit of a healing crisis. My muscles are sooooo sore!! I did it about 2 hours ago.
To me, this is a good sign! It means that something is happening. I am going to try to do this 3 times a day.
I'm trying to get rid of my fibroids naturally, and my naturopath says that inside fibroids are toxins. So, I thought, hey if oil pulling pulls out toxins, maybe it can pull toxins out of my fibroids. And while I was still doing it, I felt something happening in my fibroids.
So, I'll let you now know how it goes.
I also found another home remedy (molasses) and I didn't want to try it because I just started going raw and I feel great, but I tried a dose of it because I'm desperate to get rid of my fibroids...and oh my God, I felt TERRIBLE afterwards. After 2 months of no sugar whatsoever....that molasses was a real shock to my system, and I did not like it. No molasses for me, thank you very much.
I'll try the oil pulling (with cold-pressed, organic sesame oil) but I won't do the molasses anymore.

I spent a lot of time last night reading most of this thread and was really excited to try this when I got up today.
It's been rather warm here in north Texas the past couple of months, and I've been keeping my coconut oil in the fridge. When I got up, I got that out and dug out about a tablespoonful of the stuff and popped it into my mouth.
Oh, great googly-moogly!!!! I had never before had a mouthful of oil, and even though coconut oil really does have a pleasant taste, I was fighting the gag reflex the entire time I had that in my mouth. I swished as much as I could and stood it for as long as I could, but I think I barely made it five minutes before I just had to get rid of it. GAG!!
How on earth do you guys manage to keep it in your mouth long enough for it to work?!
Maybe I just need to concentrate on changing my eating habits and try OP again when I'm more comfortable with being raw. And we won't even go into the strange looks hubby gave me when I headed to the bathroom, oil and spoon in hand . . .

Perhaps I did, Sport. I didn't measure it, but I tried to get as close to a tablespoonful as I could.
It wasn't so much the volume of it, but the feel of the oil that grossed me out though. And all day, ever since that failed attempt, I have been in the foulest, most teary mood I have experienced in a long time. Not sure what is up with this. Clinical depression is one of the issues I'm working on though. Maybe I stirred something up with just that brief bit of OPing?

I hope it is the last time you hear anything negative about it. It is probably just because my gum pockets are too deep to get clean by brushing or swishing. I have not been oil pulling much since getting the deep cleaning done. I'm seeing the dentist for a check up next week, so I'll find out if the gum pockets are better or continuing to get worse.
Giving up oil pulling was surprisingly hard to do. I enjoyed it. I still do it every few weeks for a day or two when my teeth feel sore from too much chewing. When that happens I swish with Uncle Harry's Organic Oral Swish (sesame oil, neem, myrrh, clove, peppermint, oregano, cinnamon, everlasting, and eucalyptus). Very soothing. :)

Estelle ~ I've had lots of detox reactions from OPing... it's pretty natural. But really, you do NOT want a tablespoon. In fact, during the time you OP, you will find that your saliva also builds up so it becomes even more bulky. Sometimes I actually OP for an hour or two if I'm in a groove and on the computer or doing stuff around the house. :)
And the funny thing is... the only issue with that... is that I tend to get the giggles from something only when I have a LOT built up in my mouth. My poor computer has been accidentally splatted many times! hehe

does anyone else find that their mouth quickly fills with saliva when oil pulling? it makes it hard to op for 20 minutes. maybe spitting might help? suggestions please from others with similar issue.
Thank you:)
I started doing this a a few nights a week just, with the main purpose being to give the facial area a bit of a workout. I've noticed though, that I sleep quite well on nights when I OP just before going to sleep.
A while back, one of the relaxation techniques I tried out before sleeping involved stretching the jaw - the idea was that a lot of tension gets 'stored' there during the day. Or rather, when people are tense, they often tend to unconsciously tense their jaw, and exercise helps to release the tense jaw / mouth area. It seems the oil pulling, by proving exercise to the jaw, allows for it to be much more relaxed afterwards. Relaxed body = relaxed mind = good sleep. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
does anyone else find that their mouth quickly fills with saliva when oil pulling? it makes it hard to op for 20 minutes. maybe spitting might help? suggestions please from others with similar issue.
Thank you
It does some, yes, but I use only a teaspoon of oil so it's usually fine. You could alway spit a bit out! :)
I see soooo many benefits from it. This is a new one, though. AWESOME! Thank you for sharing scyn!!!

I've been oil-pulling with Sesame oil since November 2010.
It has helped me delay finding and going to a good periodontist. I had an issue with a back tooth and loss of bone according to my last dentist.
Between oil pulling, brushing with a natural tooth paste and rinsing with tea tree oil and water, or food-grade hydrogen peroxide, I've been doing well. I make sure I rinse and floss out food particles too. Together, all of these activities I no longer have tooth pain or discomfort.
It has whitened my teeth just a tad and all the swishing and sucking oil has improved the loose skin on my neck. :)
I don't know if I am removing any toxins sublingually, but I like oil pulling anyway! :cheer:

I've been oil pulling for a few days now and my gums are sore and irritated in several spots on the left side of my mouth. I am assuming this is part of releasing out stuff I don't need. Interesting process so far. Glad there's a thread to share and find out what others are experiencing:throwhearts:

I bought some organic sunflower oil for OP. My issue is that I have a hole in my wisdom tooth from decay. I have already experienced slight pain from the tooth. Will OP make my issue worse or will it improve? I plan on getting the tooth removed but I have to wait on a vocher from my unit to pay for it.

Eva, thanks for the info on doing it with one teaspoon. I think the info I had originally read said start with 1T and work up to 2T, and that seemed like so much to me too. I will definitely try this again.
Olahh, I don't know how big your cavity is. FWIW, I went to the dentist early this winter, certain I had a cavity on the top of one of my molars. I had been able to feel something there for a while, and could see a dark spot on top of my tooth. They told me the tooth was fine, with just a spot of discoloration. They said it could be that I had a cavity going, and then the enamel grew back. I can't definitively link this to oil pulling, but I had done OP for a week or two a couple months before that. (However, OP did not cause me pain.)

Could be! I've had multiple strange experiences that were actually a detox thanks to oil pulling. SUCH an interesting thing!

Ooooh, this is a toughie. I'm not a dentist! But from years of oil pulling (and actually NO need for the dentist!) I'd say it would probably help the decay but not the hole. But you never know!

Thx, I will begin OP later tonight on a empty stomach. If I experience alot of discomfort then I will try OP again after my wisdom tooth is removed. I dont plan on saving the tooth because the hole is too big unless my dentist tells me i can save the tooth, I just wanted to start OP detox.
I cannot WAIT to hear how it helps or what happens!!

I am going to try this tomorrow. Just one question - how long after eating should I wait, and can I drink water before?

After OP you should drink a cup or two of water and then you can eat.
No, you shouldn't drink water before.

Why do you not drink water before? I ALWAYS drink a cup of water before, and I've been doing it for almost four years with success. I'd love to know if this is something I should stop, but it seems to be working...
