Hey All!

I just bought a young Coconut from Whole Foods and popped it open and IT'S PINK inside!!! Is that normal???? Should I drink the milk or is it spoiled???

Thanks!

When young coconuts are pinkish or purplish it's a sign that they are VERY young. The meat usually isn't even meat, it's more like gel. I just opened one about an hour ago like that. Gave me LOTS of water too. I got over 2 cups but very very little gel-meat. So yes... it's good! I just put mine in my smoothie

Hey, ya'll .

I eat young coconuts constantly, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents for you. :)

The best way to make sure your coconut isn't spoiled is to examine the outside of the shell. Is it covered in purple mold anywhere? And the bottom (flat part)---is it soft, mushy, or moldy? If so, it's probably gone bad.

The bottom should be firm, resilient to the touch and just a tiny bit springy if at all. If you see green spots on the husk, it's most likely just remnants from the original outer shell that was shaved off.

Avoid moisture under the plastic wrapping, too--this indicates that the coconut is probably getting moldy.

I've had pinkish meat before, too, and 'nuts that are more water than meat. If it's not spoiled on the outside, then it's most likely not spoiled on the inside. If it is spoiled, you should be able to smell it--it won't smell like the buttery coconut water usually does. And the taste is definitely going to be "off" if it's not good.

I don't think the pink color has anything to do with age; if it's full of water then it's ready to drink. :)

Billy, I don't know if this is right, but I always find the bigger ones have the "tougher" meat. The smaller ones always seem to have that pudding-like meat. Could just be a coinkydink, though. :)
