View Full Version : Other things in Life than Food
I was thinking the other day on my fast about how many things in our life revolve around food and how when you are fasting, it seems like you are missing out, when in fact your not. I decided to fast the month of July and so far I have celebrated the following without eating food:
July the 2nd (Friend's birthday party - barbeque)
July the 4th (family ate pizza & salad)
July the 6th my Daughter's 5th Birthday party (family ate at Rainforest Cafe)
July the 13th Raw food potluck - attended just to meet likeminded folks
July the 15th Graduation Party
Two boating trips on different days (family ate icecream out I enjoyed scenery)
The point is while it seemed everyone was celebrating with food I was able to focus on the events themselves and the people. Not engaging in food allowed me to meet and connect more deeply with people. It has actually been a blessing to still go to these events and be a part of LIFE and living with my focus being off food. Yeah eating is good but there is so much more to life. So I say this because so many times we don't want to fast because of this event or that event on our calenders and WHY? We can still take part of these celebrations without eating. I hope this may help some of you who are contemplating doing a fast but putting it off because of some event you want to celebrate.
Now for those other fasters out there what kind of events have you gone to successfully and are glad you did?

Never completely understood why people have such a hard time socializing while on raw and/or, in your case, fasting. I always go to these functions to see and reconnect with family/friends, not the food. Thanks for posting this, and BTW, you look fabulous! ~ Cathy

Morn, I was waiting for the new photo. Today's the day? So true about focus. Fasting always focuses my attention outward (and upward).

This is very timely post for me. I really am not interested in food, persay, just getting my health in order right now. I could care less if they have the best...coffee, chocolate, steak, double stuffed potatoes- it does not appeal to me right now. We had a bbq and I served 2 large bowls of cut up fruit along with a huge salad. Everyone spent about 20 minutes just talking about the food and I really didn't care about the marinade on the meat. Food is something I use for the gas to get me going and keep me going but it is not something I like to socialize around or about. Does that make sense???

I was just talking about this with my husband as well! Everything my family does is around food. For goodness sakes we even take pictures of the food! pictures of the birthday cake, pictures of the turkey etc. It is weird now that I think about it. You want to know a good restaurant in town? Just ask my family. Because where do we hook up to get together? At a restaurant. Then and only then do we think of doing something else. Usually the movies, where we get popcorn. It was really hard for me at first to think differently about socializing. But I am slowly learning.
Kitty - It is funny because my husband said since I have been fasting he has been eating a little less too. He also said we revolve so much of our social time around food and now that I am fasting he was finding himself saying things like now what are we going to do. It is making him make plans to do other things than events that revolve around going out to eat and food.

It's the same way with my heritage. I am Portuguese and we love food.. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. No one in my family understands how eating raw food can be enjoyable...Although they have admitted many of the things I made were pretty good on the first bite. They refused to completely eat an entire serving of anything.. in fear they will turn raw lol... :D
I have tried to learn to have a relaxed relationship with food. Some days are worse than others but From where I was years ago, I really have changed my life in ways I didn't think were possible for the lack of will power I had.
I was such an over eater. Still am. Can be a complete binger, but it wasn't until I went raw I learned that I am NOT going to die or starve to death if I don't eat that helping of anything :o

Wow!! You are dedicated girl!! And such an ispiration!! I feel like cancelling all events until I've become a full blown raw foodie, just because I don't want to face the temptation or have to explain my eating changes.
But after reading this, I realize I would miss out on so much!! You're so right, there is more to life than food!!
Thanks!!

I fully agree. I think we're raised around food... What do you do on a date? Go eat. What do you do when you get together with friends? Go eat. When you visit parents? Eat. When you celebrate something? Food...
I don't know, but I'm just happy not to be obsessed with food like I used to be. Go outside and enjoy the world! :)
