I, slowly 'tip toed' my way along the path of exploring super foods as i thought it was probably just alot of hype to sell products but the more i tried the more i realized...this is for real!
has anyone else experienced amazing health/energy benefits from including super foods? and what have you tried and in what combo (as the combing of certain super foods has an even more powerfull effect)
right now i am blown away by my raw cacao and raw mesquite drink i make. i recieve massive amounts of good energy (not stimulant/jittery).
right now i'm practically ONLY eating:
seaweed (kelp/spirulina), sour kroute and other fermented living foods, sprouts, dark greens, berries, raw cacao, raw mesquite, flax seeds & sunflower seeds (sprouted), msm.
seriously, that's all i eat everyday now and it's all i crave!
i will be adding:
goji, bee pollen, ho sho wu, maca, blue-green algie
i am in heaven! getting more nutrients than EVER and eating so little!
please share your experiences.

My wife is VERY pleased with that as I have not had that drive for 12 years or more (no thyroid)
I was taking enzyte but it started not helping much any more so I stopped.
BUT it is either bee pollen or just raw I dont know what one it is. hope its just raw cause i am cutting out bees (its a tree hugger thing)
But im bigger and better my wife says!! WOOOOT !!!

I'm totally on a superfood kick lately. My magical elixir is cacao with mint & ho shou wo. You have to eat ho shou wu with cacao to even get the full benefits from the cacao. I also add lucuma, yacon & maca to the mix. :D

Not so sure I buy the hype.
What can be more "super-food" that that which I have picked from a tree, dug up from the ground covered in rich soil and feasted on...
I think things should be simple..
Not labelled up as "superfoods"... genrally if it comes in a packet..I dont want to eat/ingest it.. so that rules all of those out!
perhaps this thread will change my mind....who knows... ;)

I love spirluna (sp?) and cacao the most so far (though I haven't tried many others yet). Of course its not all I eat but its a good supplementation to what I do eat.
I understand that "simple" is more idea, but that doesn't work for everyone, especially if you're new to raw or dealing with certain health issues that could possibly take more than the standard amount of food to deal with. Not everyone has the option to pick fruit off trees either. Farmers Markets is second best, but still, I was even shocked to find in certain areas, farmers markets are not year round (like they generally are out here).

Superfoods have much higher nutritional content that you can measure. If you compare the antioxidants of cacao to say pomegranite or blueberry or whatever, you can see cacao is off the charts higher in antioxidants for example. Thats why they are so 'super'. They are super nutritious. I just wish we could get FRESH goji berries, FRESH lucuma, FRESH hemp leaf etc. But for now I will eat them in consentrated form because I am still getting benefits. I just need to drink more water to make up for the lack.

I just found out about these super foods this past weekend. I brought some ho sho wu last night and started using it today. I als0 had brought some truffles from allissas store and the ingredients are almost all super food. I made Alissa's Blck forest cake last night and substituted raw cacao for the carob. I'll nver go back to hershey. i have been taking Bee pollen and Ginsing for about six years. I read in my Chinese herbal book that for premature balding or grey hair , you can grind together he shou wou (polygonum multiflorum) and black sesame seeds mixed with honey take two table spoons each morning.

Love superfoods! Wish they were available at my local co-op - I have to order most of them online. The only thing they have are the goji berries and spirilina at my co-op.
I can't say enough about MSM (is that really included in the "superfoods" list?) - it is doing wondering for my skin and hair. I even have my parents taking it for their arthritis.
I love cacao! I always have a bag of cacao nibs - I don't always eat it everyday though.
The best smoothie is a cacao, coconut, almond and vanilla smoothie. It tastes like Oreo cookie. :)
I probably should be using maca - it is so expensive though. I am sure my bf would be happy if I start using it. :)

Ho shou wu, at least, I can answer. It's in the rhubarb/buckwheat family and is also called fleeceflower. It's Chinese for "What raven-black hair!" and was given that name because someone named Ho, or He, depending on how you transliterate, regained his hair color by eating it. (Why someone's name would mean What, I don't know. He belongs in Who's on first.) It's also called "fo-ti", or "fo-ti-tieng", but that name was originally given to something else, and doesn't make sense in Chinese.

I love Blue-green algae (crystal manna, blue manna, E3Live) and maca.
They help with my energy levels and I sleep better when I take them.
Raw Cacao keeps me awake but makes me feel great.
MSM tastes super bad to me so I havn't really used it much.

Funny, I was just posting in another thread how raw cacao was making me feel. I should have saved that for over here. I am real alert but not all buzzed like coffee, and had NO crash! It also seems to make be a tad bit randy, unlike regular chocolate which seems to work more as a sex substitute! Reading about all this other stuff makes me wonder.:D

Does anyone know of a reliable website that tells about the benefits, properties, history, etc of these superfoods? I know about the common things like cacao and goji berries, but some of these others like msm I have no idea. I'd like to learn more about them. Someone point me in the right direction? :) Also, does anyone know if there are specific superfoods that are supposed to help with weight loss?
I only recently started believing they can really work miracles. Two weeks ago, my hamster was pretty sick and I thought she was going to die (I just typed 'diet'... how's that for a Freudian slip, LOL!) Anyway, I gave her a couple goji berries because I'd been eating them and she was acting like she liked the smell of them on my fingers... Well, a day later she recovered 100% and has more energy than ever, and is acting like a normal hamster again. Then today, my mom took one of our dogs (15 yrs old with arthritis) to a natural vet, who prescribed goji berries! He ate some at the vet's office and came home relaxed and noticeably less stiff. Strange but true :D

Anyone here who is using (inactive) Nutritional Yeast as superfood? I know it is not raw, but it's very dense with Vit B (also B12).
Someone told me he doubts whether the Vit b is well absorbed by the body, when feeding on Nutritional Yeast. Anyone knowing more on this?

LL,
I use it, and I don't know if it's because of the B12, but my hair has started growing in thicker, my nails stronger. I don't eat gallons of it, but I definitely use it to make cheeses, on raw pasta, etc.

I never heard of nutritional yeast being considered a superfood esp since it is not even raw (David Wolfe would have a the "worst moment ever"! :D) I don't think it is. It is quite yummy and cheesy though. :)
I think eating superfoods while you are pregnant would be an excellent idea. Watch out for too much cacao though as it does have caffefine it it.

This site covers 7 superfoods (there are more):
http://healthfreaksunite.blogspot.com/2006/10/did-you-eat-your-superfoods-today.html
I wish there was a better list that had them all on it. Sometimes it is confusing to know which ones are definatley superfoods. If you do a search for superfoods, you will see non raw mainstream articles saying wine and yoghurt are superfoods. Yoghurt a superfood? Since when?
Make sure you include the words "raw food" when searching for your info! :)
I find I get better results if I search for stuff by David Wolfe since he is the unofficial authority on the superfoods.
So great about your hamster and dogs! WooHoo!:)

Anyone who knows if MSM is a whole food? It's difficult to find good exact information.
Thanks, LL
Well, depends on your definition of WHOLE FOOD. Some people say a whole food is one that is naturally in nature and not processed. So, if you go by that, than yes in a way MSM is a whole food. It is naturally in our foods (it is just organic sulfur) but it gets destroyed so easily it is often gone by the time we get to eat our food.
The supplemental MSM you buy well my guess is that it is somehow produced by some synethic means (I am not sure on how it is produced though) but I don't think it is extracted from any one natural source? Some say it comes from the ocean. Best thing to do is to check with your source. I have heard many people say that David Wolfes MSM supplement is the best quality and purest form of it (for a supplement that is)

I just wanted to mention this about getting fresh goji berries... My boyfriend is Chinese and his parents are currently growing goji plants in their garden. I'm not sure whether they used the goji berries as seeds, or whether they bought the plant somewhere in Chinatown... (Toronto, Canada area) but I know they are growing! I saw the plant, it doesn't have any berries as of the last time I saw it, but it's still early in the Canadian season.
So if you want to get fresh local, organic goji berries at a very cheap price... grow them yourself! If they will grow in Canada, they will surely grow in southern USA too!
Good luck and enjoy! :)

i found that virtually any super food that david wolfe recommends is for real. at first i thought who is this guy? i'd actually make fun of him, but when i realized how many people go to his 100's of lectures (every year) and read his books, i thought i'd just listen/read to see.
really glad i did as i'm becomming a fan! of course one should always follow their own common sense when trying anything new, but i really believe he knows what he's talking about.
you can go to rawfood.com (david wolfe is part of that) and read up on different super foods in their product list.
there's a really great website by david wolfe called thebestdayever.com
you have to pay to be a member but what i'm doing is paying for one month and downloading every lecture i can! i've got about 40 so far. they actually encourage this too.
there's lots of lectures to download all about super foods.
on pregnancy, i personally believe taking super foods while pregnant would be optimum as these are in fact just food, but food with way higher nutrient levels than other foods...like for example blueberries are 32 on the antioxident scale, but raw cacao is around 630! and people hype over blueberries! cacao also is the #1 food source for magnisium (#1 mineral most people are deficient in), #1 in chromium, high in iron, calcium...ooh and highest food source for vit c! and there's so much more!!
all these super foods are like this, that's why they're called superfood!
i think they are also super as they taste soooooooo good! and soo good when mixed together...HIGH nutrition, HIGH food enjoyment...i am very happy.

all food elements are chemicals, vit c is a chemical. it's bio-chemistry. msm is a like vit c in that it is the nutrient removed from the food source. msm is sulphur...if you buy the apporpriate books you can find this info for your self, and not just from david wolfe but other bio-chemists.
msm (sulphur) is found in all organic matter, from plants to humans. although most people are deficient in it. it is highly detoxifying and not a food in it self, but still a very valuable nutrient.

Jenjen, I agree with your enthousiasm about Wolfe, but my questions about MSM (see below) are nowhere answered on his site.
I think some rawfoodsellers are just to eager/focused on selling, and not on informing.
I think these questions are basic ones and should be answered by the general productinfo. Otherwise I see only better products than in the SAD-world, but not better communications towards cliënts.

I agree LL that he should have it on his site. A lot of the products he sells though DO have very detailed descriptions of where the product comes from and how it is produced. They just need to be a little more thorough with ALL the products. The MSM didn't get a very detailed description.
But I would email the staff there - they are very nice and should know where the MSM he sells comes from. I haven't seen any other brand of MSM tell you where they get theirs from either.

Thats a good question. I'm not sure if THC is present in hemp seeds and hemp seed oil. I just "googled it" and the articles I found are inconclusive. I'm in the process of interviewing, but only NASD companies ask for urine drug tests so far...
I have to do more research.

I believe heat is needed to activate the THC, so if you are using cold pressed oil or raw seeds, you should be fine ~ Cathy

From what I understand the part of the hemp plant you eat (the seeds) is not the same part as you smoke and does not contain the THC.

I found the answer out to this about a year ago when I had to take a drug test for a new job. I was taking a TON of hemp protein powder & lots of hemp seeds. I kept searching on the internet and never found adequate info. So, the day of the test I went in with a bag full of my hemp products to ask ...:) ... I pulled them out and the nurse started laughing hysterically at me and said "don't even bother asking, it's not the same at all, no worries". And, of course, she was right.

Anyone tried hemp leaf powder yet?
From rawguru.com:
Organic Raw Hemp Leaf Powder is an extraordinarily complex superfood, containing most of the essential nutrients in the right ratios. As 'industrial' hemp is bred to be low in thc, it is a little way from its natural the cannabis plant so, in general, it is a little prone to fungal and yeast contamination. Our suppliers of hemp leaf powder take great care to ensure that their product is free from such contamination. They travel extensively sourcing the best tasting hemp leaf. This one is a Romanian variety grown organically in mineral rich soils and sun-dried in Germany.
Hemp leaf powder builds strength and muscle mass. It provides, amongst other nutrients, essential natural sugars and carbohydrates, invaluable to sports people. It also helps with melatonin production in the skin and helps one absorb full spectrum light.
How to use Hemp Leaf Powder:
1. Add to smoothies, nut milks, coconut water and juices..
2. Mix with other superfood powders like Pure Synergy, Vitamineral Green, Billy's Green Power Food.
3. Combine with nut butters.
4. Fast on hemp leaf powder and water.
5. Add to salad dressings.
6. Mix with hemp protein powder for a complete plant protein experience.
7. Perfect in any raw chocolate and other desserts.
A detailed nutritional break down will be available shortly.
Note: This product is THC-free and completely legal to purchase and consume.

My understanding MSM is not a while food just like Vitamin C and calcium aren't whole foods. You can find MSM in whole foods such are garlic, radishes, and onions. The thing is, the soil isn't what it used to be and MSM isn't nearly as present.
Soo... I like the occasional supplement.
Just my thoughts :)

it contains theobramine which is similar in its chemical composition, and has milder, but similar effects. and from personal experience, my body could care less if it is theobramine. it still feels like caffeine to me. which means that cacao= drug= bad
just personal experience. im not judging you cacao users out there. im still one of them lol, as i drool over cacao.
It also contains Theofyline, all things ending on -ine are alkaloids, quite harsh for the body. Better see cacao as a medicine for now and then.
No, it is not so addictive; most people when have a choice take milkchocolate
and not the dark (in fact the milk and sugar are addictive).

For those of you who use MSM, how do you take it?
I buy the MSM cystals from rawguru.com (Natural Zing brand) and mix it in a bit of water. It tastes TERRIBLE, like POISON. It started burning my throat and I had to stop using it.
Is there a bettter way?

I put it in about a quart of water and just drink it over an hour or so...hardly any taste that way to me.

Yeah, it's results I'm looking for. I used to work at a health food store and spent a lot of money on supplements and never felt anything or saw a definite difference. But with green smoothies and green lemonade, baby I feel it.
