For those struggling with Green Smoothies & beginners, here's one that tastes very good & prep is less than 2 minutes.

2-3 fresh Bananas
1 cup Water
2 cups Spinach
Blend & pour over ice.

(can double or triple the amounts, depending on how much you want.)

You'll taste just bananas, no green taste. You get in your greens, enjoy the taste & it's cheap to make.

This is pretty much my green smoothie of choice too maybe some agave or pineapple too. But I like spinach since you can hardly taste it. :)

Yum sounds gooood..!

If you like the taste of Maca, that would be pretty darn good in that smoothie.

well, personal opinion here..

You can use frozen bananas too, though fresh is tastier for this smoothie. And you can also blend the ice, rather than add it after. Spinach really is the best.

RawOrchid, I find Maca is very hard to make work without a lot added to it such as cacao & goji berries. Hemp powder works pretty well though.

What is agave . . . probably a fruit but don't remember seeing it. Perhaps a Health Food Store item?

Agave is a natural sweetener with the benefit of have a very low glycemic index and is yummy!

Spinach is definitely a favorite with green smoothies with my family. But it is very important to remember to rotate the greens used in smoothies. All greens have a very small amount of some type of alkaloid (a naturally occuring poison produced by a plant). In Green for Life, Victoria Boutenko states that rotating greens is important in order to prevent the buildup of a particular alkaloid in your system. This could cause you to stop wanting green smoothies. The Boutenko family experienced this after a long period of using only kale. By rotating greens and fruits you will not lose your interest in green smoothies. Also different greens have different nutritional properties. Variety is a key to success here!

GilmoreGirl,
Thank you so much! I'm a brand spankin' newbie and have been wanting to try a green smoothie, but oh so afraid it would taste so bad that I'd never try another one-I'm going to try yours first thing after my walk Friday morning-looking forward to it!

Dahlia gave mt this suggestion when I couldn't find a winning combination of a green smoothie that worked. It comes our purple...so we'll call it a purple smoothie :)

2 frozen bananas
1 cup frozen strawberries
handful of spinach
water to taste

I'm slowly increasing my spinach as I go along. I'm just trying to get used to the taste of smoothies. However, this one didn't have an overpowering green taste to it so I really liked it. All my other smoothies always had that green taste. Blech.

My fave:

2 frozen bananas
1/2 cup blueberries
handful of spinach
water to taste

Delicious! I like it better than all the fancy ones. Easier to make, too!

My favorite ingredient in green smoothies is mango! Makes them sweet and rich.

I agree. If you look at the ingredient lists on a lot of commercial juices like Naked or Odwalla, for their green drinks (which I think taste good for getting someone use to to the idea of a green drink, I know they aren't raw) they contain banana and mango.

I know they say you shouldn't drink the same green smoothie over and over but I can't resist one I make. I figured out this combination when I use to work in the juice bar at Wild Oats and would just drink leftovers of other peoples creations.

kale/spinach/ whatever greens you like
flax
strawberries
mangoes
agave
sometimes peaches (I use more strawberry than anything and less peach than mango)

I LOVE the strawberries and mangoes together and the they both make kale actually taste good going down. I got burned out on the banana. I can't tolerate a heavy banana flavor in my smoothies.

Hey Gilmore, Girl, excellent green smoothie recipe..

I have one question for all you green smoothie drinkers

when you mentioned kale, spinach and the other veggies..
are you buying them fresh.. frozen. or the bagged veggies
like the bagged salads.
for the fresh.. are you cutting them up into portions..etc

thanks

You could also try

frozen or fresh banana
frozen or fresh strawberries
frozen or fresh blueberries
frozen or fresh pineapple
frozen or fresh cherries
spinach (frozen or fresh)
Almond milk
carob power or chocolate protein powder (even though it's not raw)

This reminds me of a banana split.

When I make it I use frozen fruit which make it taste even more like a banana split.

Most of the time I use fresh greens, but occasionally I use bagged greens, like organic spinach, spring mix, or baby lettuces. I also use leftover salads in my smoothies. If I make too much salad and end up with extra, the next morning I throw it in my smoothie. This way it is not going
to waste as I definitely prefer fresh salad. I do not do this with dressed salads. It is a great way to use up leftovers though. :)

I use bagged greens. I need to keep raw as simple as I possiblly can. It's what's worked for me for almost 2 yrs.

I don't go crazy with making sure I get a variety of anything. I use spinach the most & sometimes the mixed greens. I stick with eating mostly the same fruits. I do whatever I can to make this a simple yet enjoyable lifestyle.
