theres nothing like eating right out of mother natures hand.

i climbed up inside my cherry tree to get the ones i couldnt get with the ladder... popped some right into my mouth and loaded up my huge pockets with more :p

i havent climbed a tree in far too long. it felt very... natural. i thought id feel awkward but it was just the opposite. i felt like my feet were made to curl around the branches.

&needless to say, the cherries are out of this world ;)

i know what ill be doing when my plums, pears and apples ripen up!

Me too! I love it! Its so strange.. I refuse to eat an apple that has been sitting out in a bowl on the table. I like them cold. But if I go to an orchard I can eat them straight from the tree! Oh wow!!! When is apple picking season??

I love climbing trees too! That's a great way to put it, that it feels natural. That's exactly it. Funny, but when i was at my heaviest, the thing I missed most was being able to climb trees... that is, without fear of breaking the branches..or the trunk! :D

Oh yes, and eating straight from the tree--best thing ever! Nothing tastes quite like fresh picked. Ok, this thread has made me want to 1) climb a tree, and 2) eat apples :D

You know, I didn't realize something until I read this thread....

Since I have been eating high raw, I prefer to eat outside on my porch. I will usually take my green smoothie, salad, fruit or whatever, and sit in the sun and eat by the pool.

Perhaps it is all part of this back to nature stuff, I don't know, but I definitely enjoy my food a whole lot more when I eat outside

Now if only my measly orange trees would grow large enough for me to climb and partake of their wonderful bounty, then I would truly be in heaven!

I feel lame, but bugs scare the living crap out of me, hence I won't climb trees :( . Maybe I should get therapy.

yes, fresh, ripe fruits straight from the tree are heavenly.

I am green with envy...we can't grow much of my favorite fruit in FL (too hot). We used to have orange, lemon and grapefruit trees but they were all lost in the hurricane two years ago. You have just inspired me to replant new trees!!! Although it will be a while before climbing is an option...

I wish I had some fruit trees too. I may plant some next Spring. I tried planting a cherry tree this spring, but it didn't take and died.:(

If I remember correctly from my youth in NE, I think cherry trees need to be planted in pairs so they can pollenate properly??? Or perhaps that's only in NE because they are so few & far between. LOL

haha. I envy all of you and your fruit trees! My dad used to rent out this place w/ 2 pear trees in the back! I was never out of supply! He'd bring them to me all the time, & I'd finish them making pear juice, hehehehe. Oh but now he's relocated. argh!

If I started growing one now, how many years does it take to bear fruit? :o

Are there indoor types? Like just little ones just so I can say I have a fruit tree, too? :p

Here are two places that sell patio fruit trees, one in the US and the other in the UK.
http://www.pacificgroves.com/patio.html
http://www.gardeningexpress.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=10933

Also Pine Island Nursers sells some I believe, just can't find them on their site at the moment. Here's their site if anyone wants to look. www.tropicalfruitnursery.com (http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com)

enjoy,

We only have Meyer lemons, but our neighbor has a plum tree that hangs over our yard. I'm not complaining about the lemons though because I use so much and they (organic) are so expensive. :o

Found the link for the small trees on Pine Island Nuresry's site. They have 6 varieties of mango in that catagory. Just scroll about half way down the page to see the links to each one. http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/mango-viewer/index.htm

Condo Mangos - The term “condo mango” was coined by Dr. Richard Campbell, Ph.D. whom is the curator of tropical fruit a Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Coral Gables, Florida. It refers to varieties that are conducive to container growing, thus are small by nature and can be kept even smaller through selective pruning. Condo mangos are suitable for balconies, greenhouses, or for planting in suburban backyards. By cutting the tips of the branches once or twice a year the trees can easily be maintained at six to ten feet according to variety. Training the tree to stay small is very easy, and the fruits of your labor are sure to impress.

For those with plenty of room and warm weather that site has an amazing variety of trees. Even those who have no idea of growing anything can enjoy looking at the pictures of the fruit and trees.

They even have pictures of cashew and cacoa fruit!!

Last night we were watching Little People, Big World with the Roloffs on TLC and the kids were gathering apples from their trees to throw at each other. They were having an apple war! I was so upset, I left the room. I can't believe people disrespect natures food that way.

Stacie, my hubby grew up in central Fl before the big freeze got most of the commercial oragne groves and Orlando took off toward the west coast. Anyhow at that time central FL was covered in orange trees. Hubby grew up "chunking" green oranges at anything that moved. They were the closest thing to pick up.

konmai, you are very welcome. I'd like to live in a large greenhouse full of fruit and nut trees, veggies, herbs, and edible flowers. Well, a stump to sit on and a soft place to sleep would be nice too. Ah, nature.

I can understand picking up fruit off the ground.....but they were pulling them off of the trees. What a waste. Makes me mad every time I pay $4.00 a bag for apples with ungrateful kids just throwing them away.

Unfortunately as renters, planting anything is not an option (besides a garden). We could, but it would be pointless. Dwarf trees are our only option…maybe.

Point taken.

What gets me is passing fields, groves, and orchards where the food is sitting there rotting. We see that a lot. Guess it's the same in any farming area. There was too much rain, not enough, the market is glutted and the farmer wouldn't get paid enough to harvest, the government paid them not to harvest ...

I don't like cherries anyway. There's that saying... show indifference to what you can't have, hehe. Something like that. :p
