Do you mean you're buying bags of dried, untoasted sea-weeds, etc?
Or do you somehow find fresh seaweeds and munch on that?
All I've found is some organic dry untoasted nori sheets from my local Henry's (about 3 bucks for 10 sheets), and I've been munching on those (yummy! I used to HATE that sea flavor!)

So I'd love to know what you all are munching on when you say "sea veggies"...

I bought some dulse. It came in a bag and was in flakes. I couldn't stand the stuff or the odor of it. Couldn't get it out of the house fast enough. That was my only experience with raw sea vegetables.

bag of untoasted seaweed. Yes. Nori is my guilty pleasure. :o

Yes, most of the time I'm munching on sun-dried sea veggies - Kombu is my favorite at the moment. I do have dulse flakes that I will add to dishes (sometimes to my smoothies). I've also made Alissa's Wakame salad, which is yum-oh. Wakame, cukes, onions, sesame seeds, it's very good. And I also use Alissa's green food powder, which contains sea veggies in my green smoothies. Oh, and I also use Spirulina, which isn't a sea veggie per se, it's a blue green algae.

I LOVE SEA VEGGIES!!! :D I get all kinds of them in bags dried & untoasted. I also buy kelp powder & put it in my smoothies, green & otherwise - not a lot, just "some". I love them so much I'll eat them still dry right out of the bag. Since I live in New Mexico, I can't go sea weed gathering, seeing as how there's no sea to gather weeds from!<lol> If I did live near an ocean, I would happily gather them for free rather than buy them. Like any wildcrafting, though, I'd make sure I knew what I was gathering before I committed it to a meal; not all sea weeds are of the friendly variety. ;)

Ok! Thanks! I found some wakame at my local asian market, but the untoasted variety was the smallest and most expensive. Bummer.
Maybe it will be a rare treat - it was a pretty small bag for about 5 dollars.
it's hard for me to figure out what sea-weed I'm buying most of the time - the english on the packaging is well hidden! Good thing I love digging and researching ;)

After eating 3 sheets of nori I moved on to a banana hemp-powder cocoa smoothie :) Yummmmm I'll be burping a sweet mixture after this

I get mine from Whole Foods &/or Wild Oats. They are kinda pricey, but a little bit goes a long way! ;)

Thanks for posting this question, I was wondering about sea (I typed 'see' lol) veggies too.

For people who shop at Whole Foods, do you know if the packaged dry seaweeds they sell are all raw? Like, if they say sun-dried rather than toasted or something, are they ok?

And does anyone have any recommendations for ones that are more mild/sweet rather than fishy tasting? I bought some once, I think nori sheets, and they tasted so fishy I had to spit out the bite I took, then wash that down the garbage disposal and run the disposal for a couple minutes because I could still smell the fishyness! So yeah, looking for a type that doesn't make me have to do that :p

Uh, sorry for hijacking your thread with tons of questions, SmilingRawDancer :D

My mom used to feed me and my brother sea veggies, because she had heard from her reiki-teacher it was very healthy, and it really is. But she had no idea how to make it look tasty, she just popped a nori sheet or 5 between my sandwich, yuck, salty nori doesn't match well with the sweet flavour and texture of jelly.
I love Japanese cooking and cuisine, wicked flavours and wow aesthetics.
I heard in Japan there are tons of different sea veggies, dried or not, I'm going to ask my friend who will be going there, to bring me some varieties back. If that's even possible with all the rigid check-ups at the airport.

Sun dried just means they used the original food dehydrator instead of electricity! ;) If it doesn't say toasted then it's just dehydrated & still quite raw. Most of the sea veggies I've gotten don't say anything at all about being toasted. Until I went looking for nori sheets I had no idea that anyone would bother mucking about with toasting a sea weed & it never even occurred to me that someone might "pre-cook" them. ::shrug::

I'm with Lucy on Kombu. I actually munch on the dry sticks like they're candy. I know, weird. :)

I found wakame today, but it was boiled. Bleh.

I'll go digging at the asian market tomorrow :)

My kitten attacks me every time I bust out the nori....I like tearing pieces off of it, and just munching away. But apparently, my cat does too.
I had a whole sheet and was munching on a corner, when I heard a noise, turned to the right and saw my kitten working on the opposite corner -_-
He's so cute, and knows whats good for him! He chews on used corn cobs, and when I bring home big bags of greens, I sit them on the floor, close the door, and when I get back he ALWAYS has at least 2 leaves of kale sitting at his feet, and he munches on them forever.

Sorry to hijack, but what are “cukes”? Are they a type of sea veggie? It can’t be short for cucumber because of the spelling. :o There's no "K" in cucumber.

That's how people say cucumbers....I don't get it either, but I don't hate it :p

My mom calls them that, but I call stuff ALL SORTS of weird names.
I call spinach "espinachay", and avocados "avocostoonies"....so....yeah I don't judge

Alaria is in season again. One HFS has it but the other doesn't (or maybe ran out before I got there). They have dulse flakes, but not whole dulse.

I'm halfway through the nori. I make pico de gallo nori rolls.

I also have kelp, but don't like it as much as the others.

Do the veggies have very distinct flavor differences?
I like nori, but is it bland compared to others? please compare and explain :)

It's short for cucumber, Barose. Just a phonetic thing, I guess, because people wouldn't know what a cuc is... :D
