View Full Version : What's Your "Must Have" Ingredients?

I started going raw a few weeks ago, but I'm left with an empty kitchen now.
I only have veggies, flax seeds, agave nectar and apple cider vinegar (I hate the taste of vinegar, but it does me well to have a spoonful in the morning). I also juice carrots...about a pint a day with an apple. I want to do wheatgrass.
What's your top 5 "must have" ingredients? Especially for unhealthy bachelor/musicians.

Lame quotations placement on the title, BTW.

I always always have apples...usually some bananas too, greens for salads (my salads usually consist of greens, onions, carrots, sometimes celery and maybe pine nuts and usually some sort of cheese)
I also usually have some nuts on hand , flax seeds, and then some other types of fruit ; right now i have blueberries (except my family ate all of them....) raspberries bananas apples, and i used to have plums and peaches but they were conventional and not very good at all
oh, and cacao and for smoothies i always have spirulina and maca

A variety of greens and fruits for my green smoothies. Those are my MUST haves (along with the spirulina, Alissa's green food powder, maca powder and ground flax seed).

Um, let's see:
sun dried tomatoes, rasins, dried cranberries, pine nuts, ceyanne pepper, honey, oats, dried shredded coconut, olive oil, liquid smoke, wheat grass (frozen), fresh & frozen fruits, avacados, basil, cilantro (fresh), jalepenos, onions, and one otherload supply of bananas. Alissa provides a pretty handy shopping list in her book p63.

Hmmm...a shopping list. I'll have to check out the book. A butt-load of bananas as a staple for smoothies. Good idea.
Green food powder?
I need to get a processor.

Besides the normal staples: fruit, nuts, veggies and lots of greens, I like:
Lemons (I have a Meyer lemon tree and I still have to buy lemons!)
Spirluna
Dates - I get them fresh at the farmers markets
Raw ACV
Raw cocoa (powder and nibs)
Virgin olive oil (organic when I can find it)
Coconut oil
Vanilla extract (it’s not raw)
Vanilla beans
Nori and other sea veggies
Various organic spices

Another post about a butt-load of bananas. Is it healthy eating that many? Hmmm. I do eat at least one a day.

Why wouldn't it be? Some days I crave about 6 oranges and eat them all at once! Do you have Alissa's book and DVD?

Veganforlife,
I just bought a recipe book, so maybe later I'll check out Allisa's. I keep thinking that fruits are desserts instead of entrees. I have much deprogramming to do.

I hated hated banana when I was eating a Rubbishey vegetarian diet
Somehow eating 4 banana's after a run and a feast of 6 oranges for tea seems so much more energising than my old diet of vegetarian jelly and diet coke..eek!!
wheras with raw..esp mono eating...Its cheap..energising and clean!! :D

But if you're new to raw, mono eating may not be the best way to go at first.

If I don't have a ripe avocado it's not going to be a good day.

I'm happiest when there are juicy ingredients in the house = celery, cuke and ginger.
But for my essential list it has to be:
Avocado,
Apple,
Dried Apricots,
and Tahini. - with out Tahini I do go a bit mad!

Lately...pineapple! It's been curing my sweet tooth - I salivate thinking of the wedges sitting in my fridge, just waiting to be eaten. It tastes divine when it's cold on a hot day, full of delicious juicy sweetness! Maybe it's a pregnancy thing, LOL!

I love the Asian market, especially for that reason--cheap durian and young coconuts. :)
You have to take a pic of your bulldog with a coconut. :) Oh, btw, if you dry out your coconut husks, and you happen to have a fireplace, they make great firewood.
